Finding private yellow space parking

Worrysaboutalot · 11/07/2021 09:39

Looking for work whilst in a wheelchair.

Last week I had an interview that had me thinking, where do I find parking for a job?

In the past I simply paid at a local private car park for a space. However now I need the wider spaces and hatching, in order to exit/enter my car with double crutches and to load/offload my chair from the boot.

The job I interviewed for didn't have parking spaces and no private car park I have used outside shopping centres has yellow spaces and of course those spaces are time limited for customers.

Clearly I will keep looking but I welcome suggestions. Especially as I don't want to be offered a job, only to be unable to get into the building, as I can't park!

Access to Work is about anything that helps you work. Definitely give them a call. Also speak to any new employer once you've been offered the job and they may (should) help.

According to the government website 'Access to work' only give help to travel to work :-
  1. Taxi fares to work or a support worker if you cannot use public transport - for example, if you use a wheelchair and your journey includes a train station that does not have ramps.
  1. Taxi fares to work or a support worker if you cannot use public transport safely because of coronavirus (COVID-19) - for example, if you’re blind and because of this you’re unable to stay apart from other people.

They will also pay for adaptions to cars but I already have that bit covered.

So 'Access for work' will not pay for taxis for me to get to work. I expected that to be honest.

If the place I get a job at has a carpark I will ask them to help. But if they don't then that is my issue to deal with isn't it. In all my years working pre-kids, I sorted out and paid for my own commute. Be that by bus, train or car, that doesn't change just because I am in a chair.

Thank you. I will check the local cities and see what private drive rentals are available.

Thanks for the 3 hour bit, I thought yellow line parking was limited. I read it in the blue booklet that came with my blue badge outlining what I could amd couldn't do!

I hear you about yellow spaces. I use to thinkthe same aka that there was millions of empty spaces everywhere but when you need them, we often can't find one.
Which is fine if my husband is driving, as they drop me off and park elsewhere but if I am the driver, we/I have to go home if I can't park. Very frustrating!

You may be eligible for AtW if parking is inaccessible. Have you phoned them and had an assessment? They’re very flexible and helpful.

I will ring them Monday. However I am ineligible by their own rules, but it is worth a phone call.

I like the private drive idea most and I am cheeky enough to knock on some doors and offer cash, if I can find an understanding house owner, lol 😆

I think it is still unlimited time if there are parking meters or pay and display.

That is good to know.

On street parking could work. As long as I can keep 6 foot behind me clear and that the road is quiet enough for me to rude my chair ON the road to the nearest drop curb.

rude ride my chair!

Have a look at one on the parking apps - people often rent out their drives during the day. That might give you the proximity or the space you need.

Yes, that is the best idea, already posted several times now.

One of my team uses access to work, as there's no suitable parking near to our office, she gets a taxi that can take her chair. She does have to contribute but only the cheapest public transport fare which is a five day bus pass at £15 a week which is cheaper than parking in this area anyway and she's not paying petrol either. Her commute is around 45 minutes + depending on traffic each way.

Thank you. That sounds very promising! I am ringing Access to work tomorrow to check the situation Smile

Have you looked at the Parkopedia website? It will show you location of all car parks. I think there's private parking on there as well. Certainly has height restrictions of each car park if that's an issue.

WrongKindOfFace · 11/07/2021 13:13

Try local businesses that have car parks. Quite a few people I work with rent a space in car parks belonging to local businesses. Pub, hotel, small cash & carry type place etc.

Worrysaboutalot · 11/07/2021 22:48

Parkopedia website and local business. Check

Thanks I have plenty of ideas here. I need to keep plugging away at job applications and see where I end up Grin

I have nothing to offer but to say how clearly this shows lack of equality. It’s heartbreaking.

KatieB55 · 12/07/2021 14:29

Just park app does have spaces in cities. I have used it many times in London and booked someone's drive for two months when working in central Oxford one summer.

ancientgran · 13/07/2021 09:57

You're welcome. I hope you come back and tell us how it goes.
