To think this is grammatically incorrect or something?

'It's coming home"
What is coming home, exactly? A football? In which case it should be 'The football's coming home'

Or the cup is coming home? In which case it would surely be 'The cup's coming home'

I'm being a pedant, I know, but it doesn't make sense!!

You're either drunk, or majorly boooooring!

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 00:50

It’s at Wembley so therefore it’s already home? It’s a stupid phrase if you ask me. Also why do people feel the need to talk about “we played really well” etc - you’re not part of the team when you’re sitting on the sofa on your fat arse, therefore it’s “they” not “we”.

Flaxmeadow · 11/07/2021 00:51

It is grammatically correct, some of the earliest records of football are of English villages playing tournaments and England was the first country to professionalise the game, but it's still an irritating song and especially as it's by Skinner and Baddiel

This was better (Italia 90) by New Order

UnderperformingSeal · 11/07/2021 00:53

@PRabbit
it’s “they” not “we”

But they are our national team so they are representing "us".

Kipperandarthur · 11/07/2021 00:56

Just look it up. It’s quite simple as others have explained on here. If you don’t like it don’t watch or listen. Again simple. It’s all getting tedious with people complaining. There are many who enjoy the game and the atmosphere created. If it’s not for you ok.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 11/07/2021 00:57

@HalzTangz

It's not coming home, England don't stand a chance against Italy. I don't support any team.
@HalzTangz can I ask what your basing this prediction on?I think England have a decent chance of winning and could tell you why? It i suspect you're not interested in hearing anything other than anti-English sentiment. And I strongly suspect you know nothing about football
Bipbopboo66 · 11/07/2021 01:04

The sport of football is hopefully, coming back to where it was originally made into a sport with a recognised set up.
In the early days, rules changed depending on where you lived.
We (in England) set out the rules.
The rest of the world followed.

Thats why it is coming home.

Flaxmeadow · 11/07/2021 01:04

Yes it's like people just want to stick the boot into England, pardon the pun, for the hate of it. That tedious irrelevant meme with the faces crossed out and then tonight some Twitter EU woman or some such, boring on about how the 'lions are French', Norman or some other ancient merde ffs

They don't seem to get that it's water off a ducks back once the start of play whistle blows

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 01:07

But people still say “we” when referring to Liverpool for example. Even if they live in London and are therefore in the catchment area of another football team, if they support Liverpool they will still say “we”. You cannot argue that Liverpool is representing someone who doesn’t live in Liverpool. It seems that it’s not based on geographical area and merely on wishful thinking that you are part of the team when you’re not.

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 01:09

WalkingOnTheCracks · 11/07/2021 01:10

If you think it’s ungrammatical you don’t know enough about grammar to understand why it’s perfectly grammatical.

Thegreymethod · 11/07/2021 01:12

I think you're over thinking it. It's just a bit of fun and mostly when people say it they don't actually believe it's coming home...... maybe (hopefully) till this year!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 11/07/2021 01:12

I feel like this about Thanos saying ‘I am inevitable’.

No, Thanos. What happens - an event, an occurrence - might be inevitable; you yourself cannot be inevitable.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 11/07/2021 01:13

Yes @Flaxmeadow it does make me laugh the anti-England sentiment because I picture the players laughing at the misery/whingeing on MN/Twitter/social media as they Polish their diamond shoes in their giant mansions and wipe their tears of hurts with £50 notes 🤣

According to my research, Liverpool represent most of Scandinavia, about 99% of Wales and nearly every football-speaking child of the 1980's.

Joking apart though, "we" is the team supported by the speaker and "they" is the opposition.

Flaxmeadow · 11/07/2021 01:25

Yup FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop and then get out there on the pitch and show the whole world what they are paid to do.
Come on England!

joystir59 · 11/07/2021 01:27

Makes perfect sense to 99.9% of the population. Football's coming home.

The age of this squad is spine-tinglingly exciting. The big German clubs have been queuing up to buy young English talent recently so something must be going right. Even if we (yes, "we") lose tomorrow night tonight, we ought to be optimistic that this is the new normal... but I've been English for far too long to believe that yet...

Yes it's proving to be a great side.

I'm an old who remembers the 90s tournaments. I think we have in our heads that we are back there again, with all the old disappointments and such a flash opposition, but his England side right now is on fire. A new generation. Not one of them was born before Italia 90. We are the new flash of this tournament

elp30 · 11/07/2021 02:07

@GertrudeKerfuffle

Maybe football disappeared to the same place as sexy, before Justin Timberlake brought it back.

Ha ha ha Grin

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 02:11

This is exactly what I mean though. People thinking they’re a “we” because they like the team. Liking something or someone doesn’t make you a “we”. You aren’t involved - they’re “they” and you’re sitting at home fooling yourself. And football is already in the UK at Wembley so I don’t see how it can be “coming” home in the future sense.

Ratalie · 11/07/2021 02:12

I'm a neutral (though will be cheering England tomorrow) but I think you're over selling it a little.

England were solid if unspectacular in the group stage, have had a very kind draw on the way to the final, and have had the advantage of regularly playing at home while other team's have had to travel around the continent.

Wouldn't take a shine off the win of course, but circumstances have definitely been more favorable than normal.

This feels so, so different. And Sir Gareth of Southgate has been central to all of this going back a decade. Really we are only doing now what other countries have been doing for years but fuck me is it bearing fruit!

And @Ratalie every time the tournament is held someone has home advantage. Portugal and France will tell you that it means little on Final day.

Flaxmeadow · 11/07/2021 02:18

Ratalie

But it's a tournament, everyone has to find their feet. England have done that and are doing OK, no doubt about it
