To think this is grammatically incorrect or something?

'It's coming home"
What is coming home, exactly? A football? In which case it should be 'The football's coming home'

Or the cup is coming home? In which case it would surely be 'The cup's coming home'

I'm being a pedant, I know, but it doesn't make sense!!

This might sound an odd question, but was the music for Vindaloo (or at least large phrases from it) borrowed from elsewhere? It just sounds such a familiar tune - it did when it was first released; seems almost impossible to think that such a strong, perfectly-flowing tune like that had never been thought of before?!

Passthesauce · 10/07/2021 23:02

Good question, @WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll but sadly not one to which I know the answer. It does sound quite familiar though, although that could be because DS is obsessed with it.

As someone who was around in the 80s, I feel we all owe a debt of gratitude to Baddiel, Skinner et al for sparing us from more tournament songs released by the team.

On the subject of which, what happened to the team suits??

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/07/2021 23:03

And to clarify:

League football originated in England. Without leagues football, tournaments like the World Cup and Euro's wouldn't exist.

Say "It's coming home" or "football's coming home" is a short way of saying "the success of Football is coming home to the place it originated from".

You're all very, very fucking welcome Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 10/07/2021 23:04

It feels like it's just another "moan about how silly and uneducated the chavvy football is" thread under the guise of an obtuse question.

I for one have no interest in football at all, but I'm (non-judgementally) interested in its place in society, am quite a fan of a lot of Baddiel & Skinner's work and - have to admit it - football does have some extremely catchy, well-written songs, like Three Lions, Vindaloo and others not Diamond Lights, though Smile

@Passthesauce @footballscominghome

😁 😂

Nonmaquillee · 10/07/2021 23:08

It’s not grammatically incorrect. It refers to football.

RebeccaCloud9 · 10/07/2021 23:09

It has a dual meaning and both are grammatically correct.

To bring something home is to succeed/win.

The song was written for Euro 96 during which the sport of football was coming home to England (it's birthplace), where the tournament was held that year.

In 96 (especially before the tournament started), it totally made sense, so you have to see the song in this context. It is emotive and catchy so has become an enduring anthem in years where it doesn't make quite as much sense if you see it in isolation.

Ellpellwood · 10/07/2021 23:14

There are no bloody chariots in Rugby either but we don't get a million threads about that one.

alexdgr8 · 10/07/2021 23:17

OP do you often have trouble with colloquial conversation ?
is English perhaps not your first language.
it's not so much a matter of grammar, more excessive and misplaced literalism.
do you enjoy poetry at all.

alexdgr8 · 10/07/2021 23:18

and who is sweet Caroline, was she a footballer.

DoTheNextRightThing · 10/07/2021 23:23

The concept of football is coming home.

Grammatically, I think it's fine. As to where England is actually the home of football, however...

UnderperformingSeal · 10/07/2021 23:28

@alexdgr8

and who is sweet Caroline, was she a footballer.
And was I off school with chicken pox the day the lyrics were taught? Everyone else seems to just know them all.
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/07/2021 23:38

@alexdgr8

and who is sweet Caroline, was she a footballer.
I think she's a Belgium midfielder?
HalzTangz · 10/07/2021 23:47

It's not coming home, England don't stand a chance against Italy.
I don't support any team.

youvegottenminuteslynn · 10/07/2021 23:51

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

Or maybe it's Swede Caroline after all?!

UnderperformingSeal · 11/07/2021 00:05

I think she's a Belgium midfielder?

Only if they play the Diamond formation.

I'll get my coat.

Newrumpus · 11/07/2021 00:09

Most preschoolers know how to use pronouns. Try Butterfly Grammar OP.

Mammyloveswine · 11/07/2021 00:14

Football is coming home because the English invented football and the tournament is at home., that was the sentiment of the first song!

Now it's all about is hopefully winning!

Pedalpushers · 11/07/2021 00:19

One of the great things about language is how clever turns of phrase such as this can be so easily devised and understood even if 'incorrect'. It always makes me sad that grammar pedants want to take the joy out of human communication to make themselves feel superior.

Ratalie · 11/07/2021 00:21

The rules of football, as we know it today, we're first codified in England (although they have been refined over the years). England was also the first country to professionalize the sport.

Yes, ball games have been played throughout history in a number of places, but England has a very, very good claim to being the birthplace of football.

'Football's coming home' originally referred to England's hosting of a major tournament (Euro 96) for the first time since 1966.

It's since evolved to refer to the possibility of England bringing home a major trophy.

There's nothing grammatically incorrect, nor are the lyrics particularly difficult to grasp.

Unhomme · 11/07/2021 00:23

Really poor trolling attempt there OP

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/07/2021 00:29

Or maybe it's Swede Caroline after all?!

Yes, she's easily spotted because she's the only one wearing shorts with turn-ips.

Do you have any spare coats, UnderperformingSeal ?! Grin

Habbyhadno · 11/07/2021 00:33

I always took it to mean bringing a win/trophy back to England.

Ratalie · 11/07/2021 00:35

It's not coming home, England don't stand a chance against Italy.
I don't support any team.
I also suspect you don't follow football either.

UnderperformingSeal · 11/07/2021 00:37

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll
I do, as a matter of fact. Would you like a 20-year-old black faux leather number from Gap, a slightly mottled grey actual leather River Island (I think) one, or my now redundant old blue and white skiing jacket? Grin
