What car seat for a Houdini 2 year old that lets himself out?

Yes, I can tell him to stop.
No he does not stop.
I will keep telling him to stop, but in the mean time need to find a car seat that he can't let himself out of when I'm doing 70 on a motorway.

I had a Janet one (I think that's what it's called) but he reached down and loosened those straps from about 18 months.
Now he's 2 and undoes his current one which is just a Cuggl from Argos.

Help!

We had a cybex one which had a booster cushion in front that the normal seatbelt went around. Then got a plastic thing tat went over the seatbelt plug which you needed a ‘key’ to unlock.

SmokeyDevil · 10/07/2021 12:07

Duct tape? Grin

I had absolutely no idea that existed.

Thank you.

At this age he should be in a rearfacing car seat with a 5 point harness. If done up properly, a child can't escape from this (waiting for people to tell me otherwise^^).

danni0509 · 10/07/2021 12:36

@Peachi82 Yep I’ll be the first to tell you done up properly they can be undone. Ds could undo one in a straight jacket 😂

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou
I have an autistic 7 year old who is a master escape artist, he almost caused me to crash my car 2 years ago getting out of his car seat and in the front on my steering wheel. We’ve used all sorts and he still finds a way. He currently has a 1-1 aid in the back of his school taxi holding him in his seat and that’s with a special needs harness on. He’s a fucking nightmare!

I like the duct tape idea it’s crossed my mind many of times….

Your ds is a lot younger than mine so what we use wouldn’t be suitable for your ds.

But things I’ve used which you could use, Houdini chest clip, angel clip.

All depends on HOW he is getting out? There are all sorts of special gadgets designed for this sort of thing Grin

That will be me. I'll tell you otherwise.

I think it was a Jane, not a Janet. Anyway, he was done up properly but he could reach the button that loosened the straps, rather than undid the clasp.
So the straps would be on him but doing eff all because they were so loose.

Ha. You've not met DD! She's incredibly flexible, has very thin arms and twisty shoulders. She can wriggle out of a maxi cosi rear facing pearl even done up really tight.

MistyFrequencies · 10/07/2021 12:48

Mines a Houdini too. So much so he got out of the Houdini strap + 5 point harness seat. He's a bit bigger now so is in a seat with normal seatbelt and we push the armrest down over the seatbelt click bit. So far he hasn't figured out how to push armrest up....I'm sure he will. So I'm going to Google that key lock thing, thanks

Houdini strap will be a life saver!

eBay or Amazon for them

@MistyFrequencies

It’s like this you want.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/07/2021 12:52

I don't think a Houdini strap would work (that would have worked for the Jane issue, I'm kicking myself that I didn't know they existed!

But our current problem wouldn't change.
His hands are right by the clasp to un do it

This is the Houdini chest strap OP

Might not work but worth a try, ds has an array of things we use simultaneously.

Ds age 2 can easily press the button to undo his 5 point harness which is very securely fastened.

I bought a fabric cover that goes over the buckle and fastens with a popper - however I have to put it on back to front otherwise he can undo the popper!!

I fasten the seat buckle with slack in the straps, put the cover over the buckle and fasten back to front, then tighten the seat belt straps.

Then I give him a toy to keep him distracted.

So far so good!

Previously he was just undoing it nonstop and no amount of telling s off stopped him. I’d do it up and by the time I was back in my seat he’d undone it again!

The Houdini strap didn't work for my son at that age. He figured out how to open it on the first use. Was a nightmare. Every journey he was taking is arms out of the five point harness. He just eventually stopped. When we were going on a longer/motorway journey we did sometimes tie a scarf round the two straps that he couldn't open. Not ideal, but worked.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/07/2021 13:02

I like the buckle cover.
I think that might be the ticket.

Thank you.

My PIL called the policeman over because DH kept getting out of the chair Wink it worked!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/07/2021 13:45

That wouldn't work with my ds just yet, he wouldn't understand enough.

olderthanyouthink · 10/07/2021 13:48

I wouldn't get one with the lap cushion after seeing this.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/07/2021 15:08

I don't think anyone suggested one with a lap cushion did they?

Dustyhedge · 10/07/2021 15:22

I’ve seen someone suggest putting Velcro on the button. My 2yo can’t undo the clasp on our maxi cosi Pearl but can wriggle out of the straps if there is any flex at all. Not quite sure how she does it but she finds it hilarious. Am going to buy the Houdini strap so this thread has helped me even if not solved your problems yet.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 10/07/2021 15:24

I don't think I understand how the velcro would work.

Apparently they don’t like the sensation so leave it alone. No idea if it works or not though.
