Just read my DS school report and honestly can not find one single positive thing 🙈 any thing remotely positive is then followed up by a negative....

Feel really sad for him 😞

Maybe he's a pain at school ?? Although I have not been told that by school if that is the case. He's definitely a reluctant writer but other than that is doing well at school..

He is in Year 2 ...

Quote fail three, was regarding the pp who said most schools have report generating software - I disagree.

Rosesareyellow · 09/07/2021 19:10

You keep hearing about how things are different these days and it sounds like they sure are. It used to be, kid gets a bad report - parent tells child to buck up their ideas. Now if a kid gets a bad report parents get upset with teachers Hmm for what? Not mincing their words enough? And amongst all this getting upset with the teacher presumably parents forget to even have a word with their DCs about their school effort and behaviour. I feel sorry teachers these days.

Bridie20 · 09/07/2021 19:21

That’s awful, especially after 2 years! It has been a tough year but in my opinion the pastoral side of things should have been a priority!

I agree with everyone saying they could have found some positives for sure - every child has something lovely you can say about them! Also, if they have been a little b*er then you definitely should’ve been told because it can be a sign of them struggling with something 😥

Hope you’re ok, OP! Does your child read their reports? I’m in year 5, so always very aware that many of the children will read my comments as well as parents.

Bridie20 · 09/07/2021 19:22

@ForeverSausages my reply above was meant to be for you! Sorry!

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 09/07/2021 19:22

OP you should have said you were a primary school teacher.

It gives way more wellie to what you're saying you've read.

One of my boys is Hard Work but the teacher said some amazing things about him.

Year 2 is so tiny and far too young to be written off (Bluntness is as helpful as always) and if you believe there's an issue then it's worth addressing. If it's the sign of a shit school then that needs addressing.

Newmumatlast · 09/07/2021 19:26

@Bluntness100

Isn’t that positive op? That he is beginning to, he is starting to etc? That’s progression right?
I thought this too. And perhaps it is accurate that he is beginning to and starting to do those things.
QueenBee52 · 09/07/2021 19:33

Im sorry OP..

I bet he's doing as well as the other kids 🌸

TSSDNCOP · 09/07/2021 19:34

It is, and always has been, my firm belief that a report either at school or work should never have content that comes as a surprise but has comment, where there is a negative, that doesn't have a goal on how to support and improve.

Also, I think dropping a shit report right at the end of term is just bloody stupid as there's absolutely nothing you can do to address it.

I would ask for a meeting with the teacher and if that gets nowhere their senior leader.

ForeverSausages · 09/07/2021 19:41

Thank you @Bridie20! It's actually really comforting to read. He's in year 1 and yup he read the report (it was posted on the Dojo app) and was quite upset. He's very academic though so I wasn't surprised to see the art point, but it's a shame she couldn't at have least mentioned the positives. Fingers crossed for year 2 Smile.

ForeverSausages · 09/07/2021 19:43

Sorry OP, didn't mean to hijack. Your post resonated with me Flowers.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/07/2021 20:21

The thing is it isn't hard to do.

Billy is a funny and enthusiastic boy which means that he sometimes struggles to focus.

Jane is a perceptive and calm child who sometimes needs support in social situations.

Shit sandwich. It's easy!

DroopyClematis · 09/07/2021 20:27

I believe that many schools adopt a generic report writing system, whereby they write according to a script.
Eg, a list of criteria is posed, according to the year group, then children are categorised, according to whether they have met the criteria.
Eg With regard to scissor skills , you'll get 'Jimbo can cut accurately along a given line.'
Or 'Fossie is starting to recognise rhyme.'

I wouldn't read too much in to it. If you're at all concerned then ask to speak to the teacher.

supermario10 · 09/07/2021 21:15

@mrsterrypratchett ... this is exactly what I said! 😒

Jet888 · 09/07/2021 21:48

Obviously don't know your child so can't speak on their situation but I know I use those sorts of phrases when the child struggles and /or doesn't concentrate well. If your child isn't a major issue in class in terms of learning needs or behaviour then im afraid it's most likely you probably wouldn't have been called to be spoken to...sad and bad reality of very busy days unfortunately. The best conversations I have with the parents in these situations is when we discuss what exactly the parents can be doing at home to help the child. Have seen children come on leaps and bounds after reports like this when parents have concrete feedback like, 'Work on getting him, 2 5 and 10 times table fluent and quick. Try this online app/game etc,' or 'work on quarter to and quarter past the hour' or 'practise b and d' or whatever it is... approach the teacher in a friendly positive way, say you were concerned and want to make sure you know what to focus on in your practise with him at home.

Fifthtimelucky · 09/07/2021 22:17

My younger daughter is 21. When she was in year 1 or 2 her teacher had obviously cut and paste as she had forgotten to change the name of the child she was writing about.

It was all very generic. The teacher could have been writing about anyone.
