Hi OP, I had WLS in Aug of last year. When I started my journey I was 23stone 10. I hated my life, I hated how I looked, clothes shopping, how hard everything was, I blamed everything negative in my life on being fat.
The surgery has made a huge difference to my life. I'm 14 stone now (weightloss stalled because I didn't address my binge eating, and I'm now pregnant)

But I want to say its absolutely the best thing I've ever done.

Not bothered about the saggy skin really! Not bothered by how little I can eat, I'm satisfied with a few bites- I share meals with DH.

Just prepare yourself to maybe need to address some of the mental aspect, many people don't need to, but quite a lot of us do..
But see how you go for a bit, the first few months you'll just be on cloud 9!

Wishing you the best journey. You won't regret it.

Very interesting thread - has anyone ever had the gastric balloon rather than the bigger operations. Apparently you only need a local anaesthetic for the balloon.

MeatyRvita · 10/01/2022 22:37

I had gastric bypass surgery on the nhs 18 months ago
Just to reassure you- after the initial healing stage I can now eat normal foods (pizza, carbs, sugar, chocolate, bread, pasta, takeaway, literally anything you can think of both healthy and unhealthy)
I just can’t eat large amounts anymore; but I can eat little and often so I do have to make good choices too- calories can still add up and it’s not a miracle, it’s a tool but it really bloody helps!
Also watch out for slider foods (examples for me are wotsits/crisps, ice cream, crackers etc) which I avoid completely as they don’t take up room in your stomach therefore you can binge and eat big portions of them- thus eating too many calories!
I prioritise protein as it keeps me the fullest for the longest and you have to watch out to not lose muscle as you lose weight so quickly.
In 18 months I have lost over 13 stone and I am now just over 12 stone (and now pregnant with my second child otherwise I would still be slowly loosing)
Every one is different but for me it’s been amazing and has given me control with food, although now I can see how easy it would be to overeat now and I have to work much harder to watch my portions and make healthy balanced choices.

Hi.

I had WLS in Turkey 5 months ago. I've lost 63lbs and feel amazing.

It was tough at first but am completely adjusted now. I eat well (not many carbs, mostly protein)

I've still got about 30lbs to lose.

I am SO HAPPY with my decision.

Good luck!

Ohbums · 10/01/2022 22:43

I had the gastric sleeve BTW.

You have to still make good choices. I didn't for a while and felt like shit but am back on track now (it was Xmas after all!)

I honestly wouldn't want to go back to having my whole stomach.

Looking back, the amount I ate was actually disgusting. I did it out of boredom and sadness. And mentally I couldn't break the cycle.

This forced me to and now I'm a different person.

Pensieve · 10/01/2022 22:46

Good for you OP and all the others on here doing so well Star

What clinic in Turkey was it please?
deeedeee · 10/01/2022 23:01

How do you get this on nhs?

MeatyRvita · 10/01/2022 23:20

@deeedeee your bmi has to be over a certain threshold, and you have to prove you have tried all other methods of weight loss (exercise, keto, slimming world etc)
I went to my GP and asked to be referred for bariatric surgery (I had the guidelines and had to prove that they should refer me)
Once referred to my closest hospital that does bariatric surgery on the nhs I had to follow their plan for 12 months.
During that 12 months I had to lose (and keep off for the 12 months) over 5% of my excess weight on my own, see dieticians, nurses, anaesthesiologists, have blood tests, ecgs, etc. I also had to do a practise run of a milk diet to prove I could stick to it as that’s the diet you have to do 2 weeks before surgery to shrink your liver small enough to have the surety (just solely 4 pints of milk a day for 2 weeks I believe)
After that I was put on a waiting list (I also was not aloud to gain even a pound during this time)
2 weeks before surgery you have to follow the milk only liver reduction diet, and they weigh you on the day of surgery to check you’ve been following it. Patients are threatened that if they put you under general anaesthetic and see that your liver hasn’t shrunk adequately (due to cheating on your diet) they will not perform the surgery- which is fair enough as it increases the risk.
From start to finish I think it was 3 years for me before the day of surgery and I’ve been told that’s standard/ fairly quick.
Sorry for the long answer - I wanted to give a full picture of the process as much as possible!

Ohbums · 10/01/2022 23:49

@BBCONEANDTWO it was Gozde hospital, Kusadasi. Dr Fikret Beyaz. He is so lovely.

DreamboatCharlie · 11/01/2022 00:29

All the best op

OliveToboogie · 11/01/2022 01:34

I had Gastric sleeve 3 years ago have gone from 16.5 stone to 10stone. Got it done in Manchester. Worse part surviving on 900 calories for 2 weeks before op to get rid of toxins and fat from liver etc. Actual op not too bad. Had to go through liquids only for 2 weeks after op. Then if I overate I would just vomit it straight back up. I now am used to eating much less and tbh don't feel hungry a lot of time. Will need to take calcium, iron tabs, multi vits everyday for rest of my life. I'm so glad I did it. Paid for it through money I was left.

Good luck op, onwards and upwards (or downwards!)

Northstar1234 · 11/01/2022 09:15

I’ve had a sleeve and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made!!! I can run after my kids, I feel so much healthier, I can cross my legs!!!! It took me a long time to do it and years of yo-yo dieting. I can eat anything but my portions are so small now. I’d recommend it to anyone. Some super amazing and supportive Facebook groups that are worth joining. I’m excited for you. Good luck x x x

alfiegirl61 · 11/01/2022 12:05

Well done for going for it OP! I had it 5.5 years ago (the actual stomach reduction, not the gastric band) and it was life-changing. No, I can't eat a 3-course meal now, but I do still enjoy food. I lost 5 stone, it's stayed off, and I'm much happier. It's keyhole surgery, and after one year there were no scars visible... it all went smoothly, and I haven't got lots of excess skin. Being able to tone up with gentle exercise once you've got over the op helps avoid that too. Only one thing to bear in mind, the few days afterwards aren't always very nice, so do book some days off work. You'll have had a general anaesthetic, and in the operation they fill the abdomen with gas to facilitate the work, and that can be uncomfortable the day after. You will also need to inject (as I recall) an anti-coagulant drug for some days afterwards, so if you can't face doing that (I couldn't) then get your GP's surgery nurse to do it - mine was great.

Adobewon · 24/07/2022 17:35

juts thought I’d offer another update. I’ve lost 8 stone and have never been happier! I run 10k every Saturday and go to the gym 2/3 times a week.

Excess skin is minimal and just on my stomach (which no one ever sees anyway) I am happy with the amount I can eat and feel confident this is the best decision o ever made and also completely confident I could never have achieved this without surgery.

obesity is the only disease (and it is a disease, according to the WHO) that a Dr would tell you to go away and treat yourself.
