Hi everyone

I wondered if any of you use hello fresh etc for your food and how much roughly you spend for your amount of people?

Ideally would love recommendations of which is best. Thanks in advance x

Definitely Gusto.
We originally used HelloFresh - 6 meals for 2 people - for just over a year, but in the last few months every single box was either missing items, multiple pieces of meat with ‘use by’ of the delivery date, and the final straw was a week where 3 of the 6 meals I’d ordered weren’t in the box at all but instead there were just random recipe bags for things I hadn’t ordered. There were also problems with boxes not turning up/not being sent out/being delayed but they wouldn’t actually tell you the box wasn’t arriving until the evening of the delivery day Hmm. Boxes frequently arrived open or partially open as the top was never taped down properly. They also changed from DPD for the delivery to Hermes.

We’ve been with Gusto for 2 months now (4 meals for 4 people, does 8 meals for the 2 of us) and everything has been perfect and spot on. The quality of the meat and veg is far superior to HelloFresh, and the meals are also tastier and more filling.

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 09/07/2021 20:08

I prefer gusto, have tried hello fresh and the quality just wasn’t as good.
However I don’t think either are good value at all……I’ve mimicked a few of their recipes and it’s totally cheaper to buy you own. Given that say that they budget 4/5 a person for the 2 person box, the recipes can certainly be done cheaper buying your own. The connivence of it all however is great, and it gets you back into cooking and the enjoyment of prepping food.

Personally I’d look at the pinch of nom books and look at a bit of meal prepping around your long hours, I do know this is easier said than done having worked shifts for so long!!

Sunshinedaisymeadowsxx · 09/07/2021 20:09

Gusto we used throughout the pandemic I’d add and no issues at all ever with quality of the food…. The joe wicks meals are great as well

Okbye · 09/07/2021 20:09

Used both, Gousto much better. With Hello Fresh I found most of the ingredients to be on the turn when they arrived 🤮

Tereseta · 09/07/2021 20:25

We are using gousto past the discounted offer boxes, which we've never done with the others. We get 4 meals for 2 a week for 35 quid and it saves so much effort deciding what to eat. We waste far less and try new recipes.
I've found gousto is better quality than hello fresh and if there is a problem they credit it fast.

Some of our meals, and we are not the greatest of cooks!

Hello Fresh were terrible when I tried them recently. Two weeks running they missed out the main ingredient for one of our two meals!

Simbacatisback · 09/07/2021 20:30

Gousto were appalingl during 1st lockdown. Cancelling boxes with zero notice and refusing do anything about it. We had had an account for years. My DH was CEV and we were left without food.

We stopped using them them-and dont regret it

Lindtnotlint · 09/07/2021 20:32

Mindful chef for the win. :-) really recommend

Halmo · 09/07/2021 20:34

I really like Green Chef. The low carb options are so tasty.

Givemecoffeeplease · 09/07/2021 20:35

Just suggesting Mindful Chef too! Delicious, healthy and recycled packaging. Discount code here (not related to me, a general code I found on Pinterest!) pin.it/3AqNSQ7

Myfirstbornisacollie · 09/07/2021 20:42

I miss Abel & Cole meal boxes, apparently no plans to restart ☹️
Not impressed with hello fresh
Done a month of Gousto on discount and don’t think will continue as recipes not very inspiring
I’ve just ordered a free simply cook box on a referral code from this thread

We tried Mindful Chef but it was double the cost of Gousto and it rather felt that they bulked the recipes out with veg in uninspiring meals.

Doorhandleghost · 09/07/2021 22:20

I had hello fresh as a welcome break in the later part of the first lockdown, I was so tired of having to come up with meals. With the opening discount it was ok but by the time the initial deal was up we had tired of it - if we bought a 4 meal box often the ingredients wouldn’t last until the 4th day.

It served its purpose at the time and we got some new family favourite recipes out of it. I did get another ridiculous discount lure you back offer after a few months and got it again, but found the recipes were largely the same and again the issue with things going off too fast.

I wouldn’t rule out using them again to cover an I can’t be bothered cooking period and my DD enjoyed following the recipes. But we kept the recipe cards and can do the same cheaper.

DedalusBloom · 10/07/2021 07:44

Another vote for Mindful Chef. We're vegetarian/vegan and have found the recipes really good. I like the fact they're not massively carby as left to my own devices I'd cook a lot of jacket potato and pasta!

MummyM33 · 10/07/2021 07:57

We've been trying both hello fresh and Gousto the last few weeks. Combination of trying to eat healthy to lose extra lockdown weight and also being fed up with trying to think of meal time ideas. Have really enjoyed both but would say we preferred Gousto out of the two.
The customer service is really good that if you are missing any items they will credit you back.
We also keep the recipe cards and recreate which ones we enjoyed.
I have a referral code for both so feel free to use/ask any questions 😊

If you want to try hello fresh I can give you £20 off your first box, you just need to pm me your email.

Here is the 60% off Gousto code...

minnimiss · 10/07/2021 08:22

I'm using hello fresh at the minute because I couldn't apply any more discount codes on Gousto but I do prefer Gousto. More choice for vegetarians and the recipes are lower calorie and just a bit more tasty. Both are good though and hello fresh is great value as can always get at least 30% off. I don't think I would pay full price for either.

LittleBlueFish · 10/07/2021 08:25

We (two adults) have four recipes from Gousto every week. I love it! There’s a really good range of different cuisines and we very rarely have a meal we’re not keen on. It’s not repetitive either, although there are some recipes that are always available such as spaghetti bolognaise, pasta bake etc.
We’ve occasionally had issues with missing ingredients but gousto customer service is really good and they add credit to your account if you let them know.
Here’s my code if anyone wants to give it a go!

Hello if you haven’t already signed up I can send £46 off for hello fresh. Been a loyal customer so I’ve got great discount.

HighlandCowbag · 06/01/2022 21:22

Ive used both and preferred gousto. I think they are fine if you are in a bit of a rut foodwise and strappped for time. I used HF the last month of uni term before Christmas. I tried to avoid the standard stuff I usually cook like shepherds pie etc. The recipes were OK but lots of little sachets of sauces and cheaper cuts of meat like mince and chicken thighs rather than breast. Nothing wrong with either but not exactly luxurious.

I'd probably use Gusto if I was super busy. But tbh it's as easy, much cheaper and more choice to organise a supermarket delivery.

ThurstonArmbrister · 06/01/2022 21:39

My DP went through a Gousto phase that seems to have passed (but for how long...?). The food was fine quality-wise but lots of packaging, dozens of little sachets of stuff and I got so fed up with the accumulation of cardboard that I considered starting an AIBU about it.

latetothefisting · 06/01/2022 21:52

I think OP has had enough discount code offers now!

I preferred gousto but tbh think both of them are vastly overpriced for what you get. I would try both for the initial offers and then use the recipes you like to replicate yourself in the future. If you do online shopping it's almost the same level of effort for half the price, and you can pick a more specific delivery time too.

Like the pp said, I don't like the way they use cheaper cuts of meat (e.g. beef mince for a curry), and the way they charge even more if you want something from the 'premium' range. It ends up nearly being the same as eating out at a nice pub but having to do all the cooking and cleaning yourself.

Viviennemary · 06/01/2022 22:01

Somebody recommended mindful chef to me. But it seems the most expensive one. Will give it a try though as haven't got round to trying any of them yet.

Lucyccfc68 · 06/01/2022 22:05

Out of all of the different suppliers, which one would people recommend if you are ordering for just one person please? Thanks
