Hi everyone

I wondered if any of you use hello fresh etc for your food and how much roughly you spend for your amount of people?

Ideally would love recommendations of which is best. Thanks in advance x

We used to have Gousto almost every week but they treated us terribly during the first lockdown. Because of this mistreatment, we switched to Hello Fresh and I really like it.
We get 5 meals for £40. It’s feeds me, my husband and our children (4 and 2).

AlexaShutUp · 09/07/2021 15:08

Thanks. It's 2 adults and 16yo dd, but dd has a tiny appetite and I tend to eat smallish portions due to gallstones. DH has quite a big appetite though, so it's hard to know whether to get enough for 2 or for 4.

KimmyAndMe · 09/07/2021 15:11

I have recently cancelled Hello Fresh. We enjoyed the first three boxes but the last 3 boxes arrived with items missing and 3 packs of meat which were all dated for the following day. The fresh ingredients weren’t exactly fresh either.

I’m looking at Gousto website at the moment. I’m not sure if I can see their full range of meals or not 🤔 There doesn’t seem to be many different meals to choose from (mostly pasta which we are not too fussed on - one pasta meal per month is ok).

Gousto subscribers - Is there more meals to choose from once you subscribe?

BattleOfWills · 09/07/2021 15:15

We love Gousto. Not many low carb vegetarian options for me (it’s a bit niche) so I’ve stopped eating it, but I get plant based meals for my vegan and vegetarian kids and they really enjoy cooking them themselves. Four meals for 2 for £34.99

DontLookEthel · 09/07/2021 15:15

We use Mindful Chef. Three meals for two every week is expensive (cost depends on what you chose) but worth it to us as I'm celiac. All the recipes are gluten and dairy free. It's fantastic to have so much choice after years of eating a restricted diet.

Lemongrass9 · 09/07/2021 15:20

Gousto have a lot more choice than hello fresh, and their portion size is also better than hello fresh in my opinion - but I am 8 months pregnant and DH works long hours in an active job so quite decent appetites here!

I recently had a head of broccoli that had gone mouldy - could have used it sooner but was still not ideal, gousto gave me £6 off the next box which I thought was incredibly generous considering we were still able to eat the meal - just without the broccoli. Didn’t even have to call up, just let them know on the app.

wishawish91 · 09/07/2021 15:37

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'm going with Gousto!

I work long hours and I'm putting more and more weight on where I get home and eat or binge on something unhealthy with no nutrition.

We used Hello Fresh and Gousto. Found them very similar. Recipes were tasty, but too much unnecessary packaging, and not very flexible as you have to eat fresh food before it goes off

We much prefer Simply Cook. They send pastes and spices, and you just buy a few ingredients. No waste. More flexible. Great for self catering holidays too

ScottishNewbie · 09/07/2021 15:40

Gousto 100%

I tried Hello Fresh and had rotten veg every single time.

Gousto's meals are super easy to follow but they use lovely ingredients and we have loads of new fave recipes we make over again

I'll look them up, as I was debating trying Gousto or HF, but am also Coeliac. Thanks for the heads up 👍🏻

I really liked Gousto; lots of choice, food was nice and changed our eating habits for the better

faw2009 · 09/07/2021 15:57

When I used them I preferred Gousto to Hello Fresh. More choice and easy to stop/ start. Hello Fresh were on a subscription model and I once had a box of unwanted food dumped on my doorstep without any notification. I think it's changed now. I don't use either now as all the plastic packaging seemed excessive.

I am also a fan of Simply Cook. The little pots have long shelf life and really flexible to use the flavours with other meat/veg than the recipe. Also a subscription service though so need to keep an eye that you choose the meals before the deadline if you're fussed.

Snooks1971 · 09/07/2021 16:03

We’ve tried Gousto and HelloFresh during last year’s lockdown, it was our ‘treat’.

We also tried Simply Cook and we’ve stuck with Simply Cook, here is a referral code for a free first box - I also get a box.

Coulddowithanap · 09/07/2021 16:07

We had a trial of hello fresh, we really liked it. The packets of food really made it easy to prepare the meals and the instructions were easy to follow.

Think we have a £20 off voucher, I'll have a look if anyone is interested.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 09/07/2021 16:11

We love HF, have 3 meals a week for 2 of us. I think they're generous portions and it's encouraged us to try new recipes. I've yet to pay full price, there are loads of discount codes around.

Snooks1971 · 09/07/2021 18:15

Meant to add earlier, that out of the 2 we just preferred HF, but only marginally. Unlike a PP I liked that with HF if a recipe had garlic, they included the entire bulb but with Gousto they just sent one (or 2 or 3 or whatever) individual cloves.

Best to try both really and never pay full price! Lots of offers and referral codes are out there.

It’s lovely to try new things though, but both have a significant amount of packaging - tiny plastic pots with spices etc. That’s the only downside really.

Depends on your needs, I’m a keen and competent cook but lack imagination and get stuck in a rut. This his why we prefer Simply Cook because you get the pastes/spices and can easily swap out or substitute the ingredients.

countbackfromten · 09/07/2021 18:56

I use Mindful Chef and cannot recommend it enough. Lovely meals, great customer service and they have good environmental credentials.

Gandalfsthong · 09/07/2021 19:17

Try mindful chef! We found generous portions, healthy and recipes I wouldn’t have made usually.

MayflowerMaisie · 09/07/2021 19:18

We prefer Gousto. I like being able to filter the recipes for vegetarian or fish based recipes.
With HF, all the recipes we seemed to fancy were an extra charge.

EastWestWhosBest · 09/07/2021 19:19

Can I suggest Riverford?

They take back and recycle all their packaging. Many of the recipes were really easy and I’ve started cooking them as regular meals.

waddleandtoddle · 09/07/2021 19:24

Green chef is my recommendation - it's brilliant. Much less carby than Hello Fresh if you go keto/low carb. Gousto is better than Hello Fresh, however HF tends to have more freebies and discounts.

Anonymouslyposting · 09/07/2021 19:44

Absolutely love Gousto, we have had it four years and spend £35 per week for four meals for two people. Great food choice, lots of different cuisines and we are always trying new things. We recommend it to everyone.

My parents had Hello Fresh then switched to Gousto - they said the portions were a little smaller but the wider choice was worth it.

Anonymouslyposting · 09/07/2021 19:46

We also tried feast box. Amazing international food but the meals took a bit long to prep so we now only have it when we have more time.

Wideawakeandconfused · 09/07/2021 19:49

Tried them all and have stayed with Mindful Chef. By far the best recipes - always new and not filled with potatoes or pasta like HF. More expensive but the quality is fantastic, as is their customer service.

kowari · 09/07/2021 19:52

I use Simplycook for the two of us. It's recipe kits with pastas, spice blends, garnishes and so on that you can keep in the cupboard and use when you want to, no pressure. You just buy half a dozen fresh ingredients. I have a code for a free trial box if anyone wants one. Free box
