Am I bad for having never downloaded the NHS covid app?

I realise with all this talk of the NHS app that I have never downloaded it - I didnt realise that I should?

I have always provided name and address when asked in restaurants, pubs etc but havent had the app running generally.

I guess I like to think that I'm fairly safe - I have been working from home since Jan and interacting with partner who goes to work and children at school and a few occasions interacting with parents in law and parents. My only interaction with others is at the supermarket several times a week.

Have I been irresponsible or just managed the risk appropriately? If everyone isnt doing it what is the point of anyone doing it?

@OneAlabamaReturn

True but at least I’ve actually enjoyed the past year or so more than most people. Survival of the fittest. Just life I’m afraid.

ilovesooty · 09/07/2021 17:50

@Avoidance

Never downloaded it and always give a fake number and name in restaurants or pretend to take a pic! Nor have I had either vaccine.
If I said what I thought of that I'd be banned.
ilovesooty · 09/07/2021 17:53

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams

My phone is too old for it, but I've always signed in however I've been asked at places.

I'll happily wear a mask, wash my hands, follow one-way systems and number restrictions, leave my name and number, have the vaccine etc. but I'm not buying a new phone when there's nothing wrong with my old one!

All that's perfectly understandable. I just have an issue with the irresponsible and intentional liars - and there are plenty of them. No one was ever under any obligation to have the app.

I’m a nurse in a care home and never downloaded it. Initially because there was a good chance I’d forget to turn it off on arrival to work so would be told to isolate even though we wear PPE.

We have done weekly PCR testing since last summer as well as twice weekly LFT. When we’ve had positive cases in staff or residents PCR increased to twice a week and daily LFT. Even now all staff and residents have been double vaccinated, we still wear PPE all shift, PCR test weekly and LFT twice a week and we haven’t had a positive case in months.

I have DS at home isolating as a child in his year tested positive. My DS hasn’t been in close contact with the child but all 200 kids in his year are now home. I don’t want to increase our chances of having to isolate unnecessarily and will be glad when close contact isolating ends.

No I never downloaded nor did DH or our kids.

Powerof4 · 09/07/2021 19:12

My phone was too old but I didn’t get the app once I’d upgraded as it thinks you can get covid through a brick wall.

Heatherjayne1972 · 09/07/2021 19:12

Nope never downloaded it
Can’t have it on at work so pointless having it
Quite surprised at the amount of places I’ve been recently where they’ve not taken any details at all tho

Selfish, entitled actions like yours are why we are still in a mess.

I hope you weren't hypocritical enough to clap for the NHS or congratulate Major Tom.

thegcatsmother · 10/07/2021 10:03

No smartphone, so no app.

TheGenealogist · 10/07/2021 10:07

Never had it. We're in Scotland and have a separate app.

We're in England this week on holiday, when we're asked to "check in" at pubs or attractions we just point our phone in the direction of the QR code. Job done. I did have the Covid ZOE app for a bit and deleted that too.

Dinks90 · 10/07/2021 10:12

No because it doesn't work as it should

FayeFayeFayeFayeFaye · 10/07/2021 10:19

@Lamentations

Imagine if all the NHS and other frontline workers had downloaded it. Who would have worked in the hospitals?
We have to turn it off at work.

I never downloaded it anyway.

coconutmonkey · 10/07/2021 10:32

Of course not. It's a choice to have the app. You are always able to leave contact details in other ways at these establishments.

JaceLancs · 10/07/2021 10:50

I never downloaded it because it was fairly predictable that it would cause more problems than it resolved
DD and her partner who work for NHS were told to delete it by management very early on as it could cause staffing problems
DS who works in education was advised by his employer in January for same reason

Avoidance · 10/07/2021 13:02

@OneAlabamaReturn

You’re right I wasn’t hypocritical enough in fact I was confused as to why everyone was outside clapping on their doorsteps the first time and well had no idea who captain Tom was until my friend told me. However I do think what he did was incredible, but clapping for the NHS was just a way to entertain the kids IMO as I don’t believe if I were an NHS worker it would have made a blind bit of difference to me if my neighbours were clapping but probably would have appreciated the supermarkets allocating specific times for nhs workers if I was working long hours, and also the takeaways that were being delivered to hospitals etc.

Fyi I’m also a ‘key worker’ so have worked throughout the entire pandemic, just not as a medical professional.

OhRene · 10/07/2021 13:06

I never did. Even though I'm very COVID cautious. I was one of those people who stopped going to supermarkets and washed her shopping. I even disinfected my gate and letterbox for the posties and couriers in the first lockdown.

I've heard quite a few stories of people being told to isolate but no good reason given. Phones left in lockers, neighbours being pinged because of thin walls between flats etc.

likeafishneedsabike · 10/07/2021 20:16

@Lamentations

There was no way I was ever downloading it. I saw plenty of people use it as a convenient way of getting repeated paid periods of time off work though.
This is why I love mumsnet. Someone always crops up to 100% nail it and restore my faith in the human race.
augustusglupe · 10/07/2021 20:17

We've never had it either.

FreeBritnee · 10/07/2021 20:27

I’ve never had the app nor have I ever needed a test. Never caught the virus. Same with my partner and children.

Sparklingbrook · 10/07/2021 20:38

I have it but I have to put it in a locker at work so have switched the scanning off. I don't always remember to switch it back on when I go home.
I don't trust the App, too many variables, and I doubt it's accuracy.

I would love to know how many people that get a ping from the App and isolate for days on end actually go on to get Covid.
