Anyone else who can’t sleep after horror films?

Blondiebueno · 09/07/2021 07:12

I don’t watch them by choice, but if I see a sci-fi/ thriller that is more like a horror then I can’t sleep for about a week properly. I’m scared of the dark too, I’m ok if my partner is there but if I ever have to sleep alone then I have a lamp on.
The film will be etched in my brain and I’ll find it hard to get rid of.
Anyone else have this? Feel a little pathetic at 30.

I'm like this. I get scared locking up the house afterwards, or walking past windows in case I see something ((you know when you catch your reflection at night and it looks like someone is outside).

I usually watch something funny afterwards and that helps.

I watched Luther a few years ago and in one episode a murderer hides under a bed and another time in an attic. I get a bit nervous going into our attic for that reason!

Betsythecheshirecat · 09/07/2021 07:41

Just to clarify, Luther is /not/ my recommendation for a funny light-hearted programme to take your mind off the horror Grin.

romdowa · 09/07/2021 07:42

I love scary movies but if I watch them too late at night I completely freak myself out 😅😅 I would be awake for nights thinking about it.

Sunnyday321 · 09/07/2021 07:45

As I've got older I can't watch the ' tense ' type of horror films.

StepawayfromtheBiscuittin · 09/07/2021 07:46

Oh this is me!
Watched Scream as a teenager and really noticed it after that.
I just don't watch horrors or even a lot of dark thrillers as I can't clear my mind at all for ages

TheGoogleMum · 09/07/2021 07:52

Yep I'm rubbish with scary films at night afterwards so don't watch them anymore

FrankButchersDickieBow · 09/07/2021 07:52

I watched one called Us.

It wasn't scary as such, but it really unsettled me.

That was about 3 months ago and if I wake up in the middle if the night, I think about it for some reason. If my husband is on nights, I have to put a light on.

I don't mind blood and gore and zombie stuff, but I won't watch ghost stuff.

Not sure why this particular film has stuck in my brain.

SprogletsMum · 09/07/2021 07:54

@FrankButchersDickieBow is that the one where everyone has an evil counterpart?
If it is, I've watched just about every "scary" film recently and that's the only one I found was really freaky.

coulditbecominghome · 09/07/2021 07:56

@Betsythecheshirecat are you me?! That Luther episode 😱

TheGumption · 09/07/2021 07:56

The Luther under the bed scene was horrific and definitely disturbed my sleep afterwards Blush

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/07/2021 08:00

That thing in 1993 with Sarah Greene scared the crap out of me. I havent watched anything ghost related since. I just cant deal. I even fast forward gogglebox if theyre watching something frightening.

Aria2015 · 09/07/2021 08:02

Yes! I'm like this! The thing I've found that helps is to google the films 'meaning' and find some super fan who talks about 'imagery' and 'symbolism' and deconstructs the film. Somehow seeing it broken down the same way my GCSE English lit teacher broke down Hamlet makes it less scary! Try it!

Meruem · 09/07/2021 08:02

I have an adult DD and DS. DD and I love horror films. The more disturbing the better, we enjoy that “unsettled” feeling. DS hates them! He told he watched something that unexpectedly took a dark turn and felt awful for a few days!

I think that’s the thing. Some people enjoy the feelings from watching something scary/disturbing, others don’t. It’s not about being brave or not.

Angeldust2810 · 09/07/2021 08:12

This is me and I’m 39! It’s not just films. Computer games also and if anyone tells me something they’ve experienced. Two weeks ago I had two nights away in a cottage. First night no problem. Second night couldn’t sleep as I read the guest book which said someone heard voices and thought it was haunted!

SupermanInk · 09/07/2021 08:13

I haven’t even watched this but know I’m going to be feeling nervous getting into bed tonight...😱

I generally don’t watch anything scary, I hate that feeling. If I’m feeling particularly brave I may watch something scary but only in the day and only when there’s lots of people in the house with me. And I always have to watch something very lighthearted afterwards. 😂

SupermanInk · 09/07/2021 08:14

At least you stayed... I’d have probably gone home. 😬🤣

blossomtree323 · 09/07/2021 08:25

Urgh I'm like this too. That Luther episode scared the shit out of me as well Grin. I had to turn on all the lights in the house afterwards.

BlueBellsArePretty · 09/07/2021 08:27

I remember watching the Conjuring the weekend before my husband left to work away for the week. That was a bad idea 😂

TheGumption · 09/07/2021 08:29

It's always those quiet but fucking creepy things that are worse I find. The Luther bed scene wasn't a massive jump scare but more like a "omg..what's that...no...no no no no".
Similar to The Strangers where sack head man appears quietly in the shadows behind Liv Tyler's character and watches her 😭😭

Ghostwatch! That scared the crap out of me for weeks.

I'm thinking of getting the DVD now - I love a good horror 😄

Maggiesfarm · 09/07/2021 08:34

I was exactly the same. I now don't watch horror films or read horror fiction, the same applies to anything too gory.

My fear of the dark disappeared when I had my first baby. I don't know why but was relieved; it has never returned. I still have plenty of other fears.

coulditbecominghome · 09/07/2021 08:38

I find supernatural & suspense stuff the most creepy. Any film that has a baby or child that sees or communicates with dead people, I'm like "parents, leave your child & run". 😆

JaceLancs · 09/07/2021 08:40

I avoid horror films - but the original version of woman in black still haunts me - not the poor remake with Daniel R

StepawayfromtheBiscuittin · 09/07/2021 08:54

Eh can we stop talking about Luther. I don't think I made it as far as that scene but I'm thinking about it now anyway.
Either that or start a thread about happy things that we can all log on to later tonight when we can't sleep!!!!!!

Not just films! I recently had a 10 day period of sleeping very badly. It was only when it came to an end and my normal sleep patterns resumed that I realised that the poor sleep had been caused by the thriller about a high school shooting I had been reading before turning out the light.
