Anyone else who can’t sleep after horror films?

Blondiebueno · 09/07/2021 07:12

I don’t watch them by choice, but if I see a sci-fi/ thriller that is more like a horror then I can’t sleep for about a week properly. I’m scared of the dark too, I’m ok if my partner is there but if I ever have to sleep alone then I have a lamp on.
The film will be etched in my brain and I’ll find it hard to get rid of.
Anyone else have this? Feel a little pathetic at 30.

I will never watch Toy Story again after discovering toys can come alive!
Remove those batteries ladies!

I watched Luther a few years ago and in one episode a murderer hides under a bed and another time in an attic. I get a bit nervous going into our attic for that reason!

DH worked away a fair bit when I watched Luther and I was absolutely terrified of getting into bed most nights incase someone was under it waiting to pounce on me! Honestly, that episode stayed with me for a long time.

Livpool · 09/07/2021 14:19

When me and DH were dating I brought Amityville(sp?) Horror on dvd to watch. We started watching it but it was getting late. I left the DVD at his.

He then hid it under his mattress as he was so scared. I still laugh at him about this

Thanks for the replies, glad to see it isn’t just me! I try to read up about how the film was made, SFX etc. And looking at the goods is a good idea.
I watched ‘Under the skin’ with Scarlett Johansson about a month ago and for a week or so later it was all I could see when I closed my eyes.
I’ll just keep trying to work on it and tell myself it’s not real.

It's not the sleeping, it's the getting up for a wee!

VerticalHorizon · 09/07/2021 14:55

Never...
NEVER...
Get up for a wee.

It is a well known fact that evil spirits are offended by it.

The do not like to be offended.

They will not be offended.

They will ensure it does not happen.

I love horrors, but after seeing The Conjuring at the cinema, I stayed up until daylight. Luckily it was the summer so only had to wait til after 4 😂

Normally I'm fine

TwilightSkies · 09/07/2021 15:00

I watched the last 5 minutes of Hereditary about 6 months and still feel disturbed from it. DD1 then decided it would be a good idea to make me watch a few minutes of Midsommer (same director), and I’m completely disturbed again.
Normal horrors don’t really bother me, but there was something about these 2 that was so much worse.
The Shining is the only other film to have this effect on me.

VerticalHorizon · 09/07/2021 15:17

The Lego Movie was a horror. Albeit not intentionally.

Confusedandshaken · 09/07/2021 15:22

This thread is so funny!

The Exorcist movie came out when I was about 11. I didn't see the movie back then (obv) but I read the book it was based on. I was so scared that I slept with my lovely Mother of Pearl communion prayer book tucked into my pyjama bottoms at night for months.

SirenSays · 09/07/2021 15:33

I love horror movies, the scarier the better. Both my mum and sister freak out and won't even watch trailers. Yet they're both into Luther and detective shows. It doesn't make any sense to me. They're scared of ghosts and ghouls but not realistic murder stuff. Bizarre.
The trick with ghostly paranormal horrors is to imagine an something daft doing the spooky stuff, once you mentally give it a body you'll realise how dumb it actually is. Oooo I'm an all powerful ghost, watch me move some fridge magnets 😂

VerticalHorizon · 09/07/2021 16:18

I don't think it's bizarre. Something more tangible - a murder might be shocking in terms of the sadness or violence, but horror films are more than that... there's creepiness, a suspense. It's not about the murder, it's about the potential for the murder. The threat of there being something waiting, watching, hiding...

The two are very different.

SirenSays · 09/07/2021 16:34

Haha obviously theyre different but I stand by my point. Apparently in Luther theres something lurking, waiting and watching underneath a bed. Shows like criminal minds will have everything from fake-out bumps in the night to stalking, torture and murder.. Lots of which are inspired by real crimes. I can open a newspaper and I'm guaranteed to be able to read a story about a young woman just like me who was murdered. We know the names of serial killers. We know the names of their victims. I can't name anyone who was murdered, raped or tortured by ghosts and goblins.

Maunderingdrunkenly · 09/07/2021 16:35

Definitely don’t watch Marianne on netflix!

I’m a horror fan but my god that is bad

That's because the bodies were never found... they were taken away...

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale

That thing in 1993 with Sarah Greene scared the crap out of me. I havent watched anything ghost related since. I just cant deal. I even fast forward gogglebox if theyre watching something frightening.
This was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this post too. Pretty sure I was a teen when this aired but I still had to get in with my mam at bedtime Grin
Ellpellwood · 09/07/2021 17:45

I love horror films but I watched a Youtuber talking about her childhood in a haunted house the other day. Every time I closed my eyes to sleep I felt like someone was standing watching me in the doorway. Brrrr.

@SprogletsMum - yes - that's the one
