My dog bit a cat 😪

Bluetoybear · 08/07/2021 18:00

Please be kind as I am so stressed over this.. name changed for this SadI have a 7 year old dog which is only walked on a lead 3 times a day in local park and let out in my back garden throughout the day for a wee etc. My back garden has a 6 foot fence around it so my dog can't get out. Yesterday the neighbours cat jumped into my garden and my dog ran after it and bit it on its legSad. My neighbour has taken the poor cat to the vets and has had a big vets bill for it and neighbours husband has came round at tea time demanding I pay it all. He was very vocal about it and said if I don't pay it he will 'sue/take me to court/get in touch with authority's saying my dog is dangerous etc. I am so worried as the cat has awful injuries. I have offered to pay half out of goodwill but neighbours telling me I need to pay all of the bill which I can't afford.

bloody con artists! Im happy the cat is fine but wtf is wrong with them?!

Fiddliestofsticks · 11/07/2021 11:58

What you say just means the cat has no lasting damage that you can see, but it doesnt mean it wasnt injured. Could still have been wound cleaning and antibiotics etc. So they could still have a vet bill to pay, but they've clearly exaggerated the injury because they're dickheads.

(I'm on your side! Posted on here already. Neighbour is an arsehole and you do not need to pay that bill, especially with how he behaved!)

Bluetoybear · 11/07/2021 11:59

Husband wants to go round to say 'I am pleased your cat is ok!' but I have said no as I don't want anymore bother! I am so pleased the cats ok 🐱 ..I don't think the next door neighbours will bother me again...will they?

30degreesandmeltinghere · 11/07/2021 12:01

Can any of you lovely cat owners please help me? ..The cat fencing that a few of you have posted on here..would it be any use putting it around the inside of my fence? Would cats be able to get into my garden as this has really shook me up and I am now nervous letting Timmy out in garden when I am inside (he is never locked out..I leave the back door open for him to come in and out)
Thank you Flowers

Good to hear the cat is ok, if they were that worried about it they would keep it in or catproof their own garden. You can put the cat fencing your side, do you own all the fences, but an agile cat will climb over if just determined.

Bluetoybear · 11/07/2021 12:15

@DogsSausages...Yes we own all sides of fence (we put a new high fence up when we moved in ) ..so you think the cat would get in again even with the cat proofing on Sad

We have katsecure fencing- wooden roller type. So far it has kept our next door neighbours cat out as cats are generally reluctant to jump blindly over something. However, if he did get in he'd be trapped so not ideal.

In our case we have it to keep our own cats in! But I know neighbours cat was a regular visitor before we moved in

DogsSausages · 11/07/2021 12:33

What sort of thing are you thinking of, dont use those awful spikes and some cats seem to love rubbing their faces and weaving in and out of rubber strips.

CaptSkippy · 11/07/2021 12:35

OP, maybe install some cameras in your yard and one by the front door. That way you'll have proof of whatever happens. It can also work as a deterrent to pull a fast one on you, however it's not foolproof. Don't talk to the neighbors anymore. They sound like scam artists.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 11/07/2021 12:37

Just make a sign
No Cats Allowed..
Seriously op don't give it another thought.. It's their duty to keep their dcat safe not yours...

lovethisjourneyforme · 11/07/2021 12:52

They sound like absolute knobs and I'd make a complaint to the council regarding their behaviour but that's just me.

I have a very large territorial rabbit in my garden who lives very happily in solitude, she doesn't tolerate other animals so when a cat came into our garden she was more than happy to attack it. If the owner had come round claiming that the cat was injured I'd have bloody laughed in their face - the cat was in MY garden disturbing MY animal so it could dump on MY plants. I have 2 cats who are indoors partly because I know the risks to wildlife that cats pose and also because I don't want anything to happen to them.

Your neighbours let their cat out knowing the risks, the cat was fine, they're clearly scam artists and I'd try and let it go. Like PP have said, get a ring doorbell. Also plant some onions and garlic in hanging pots and attach to the fence, you'll never see the bloody thing again.

notsofussy · 11/07/2021 13:14

The dog was on your property, the cat was technically trespassing.
Its a shame for the cat but thats what happens when you have cats, they get into all sorts of mischief. This is why I take out pet insurance on my cats. If the cat owners wanted to keep their pet out of mischief they should have made their own garden a place that the cat couldnt get out of ( my friend has done this with her cats so it can be done) or not let it out of the house. You are very kind to offer to pay towards the vets bill I think I would have done the same but I certainly woudnt be paying the full bill.

ShutUpaYourFace · 11/07/2021 13:32

Glad the cat is ok. Shame about the neighbours. Muttering "bloody dog" knowing you can hear. I would be inclined to say if your bloody cat comes back in my garden again it won't be so lucky next time, but that would fuel the fire and is probably not a good idea.
Get a water pistol. I was looking for my kids and reading some reviews, I was surprised how many people use them to deter cats. Of course you could also mis aim and accidentally get the arsehole next door when he's in his garden muttering. Give him something to mutter about!

Im a cat and dog owner id not expect you to pay if my cat went into your garden
My dog jumped a wall while on a lead and bit a dog in a garden and I paid the full vets bill as it was her fault for going into the garden.id not pay this bill and its a bit cheeky to expect you to.

I think he should. The man next door has been banging on your door and threatening legal action, asking for money and talking about you to your neighbours. I’d go round there and want to find out why he was lying.
iloveeverykindofcat · 11/07/2021 14:06

Oh I'm so glad its okay and your neighbours have stopped harrassing. Healthy cats do seem to get out of some awful scrapes and heal amazingly well when they do get injured. One of mine had a total dislocation of the front left ankle - the bones were nowhere near each other, I saw the x-ray. The vet put a plate in, she was putting it down correctly in days and a few weeks later she was running, climbing, grabbing and controlling the claws. And she's not a young cat either. I guess there's a reason we say they have nine lives. Most cat secure fencing I've seen is designed to keep cats in rather than out - it tends to bend inwards at the top, so they can't grab and pull themselves over. But I suppose you could get it and have it bend outwards into the neighbours yard - unless they'd object to that too. You shouldn't have to though. They should either make a secure area for their cat - which often isn't cheap, take it from me - or if they're not prepared to cough up the money for that, keep it indoors.

Cherrysoup · 11/07/2021 14:13

THE CAT IS FINE!!!!!

Have they been trying to scam you?!

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/07/2021 14:22

Your ndn has just had a bollocking off his wife for letting the cat out hasn't he?. He’s literally let the cat out of the bag.

Bonjourfern · 11/07/2021 14:28

I would actually complain about this. Not sure who too , council or Police etc. Pretty sure they were trying to scam you then, surely that's some type of fraud? Nasty bastard neighbours!

ChefWifeLife · 11/07/2021 14:35

@Bluetoybear this is not your fault. Sounds like the Neigbour’s don’t have pet insurance and if that’s the case it’s a steep learning curve.

My cat got into a spat with my next door neighbours cat and ended up with a nasty bite on his tail. There is no way that I would have expected them to pay a thing!

Another Neigbour’s dog regularly tries to chase my cats but is on a lead. If the dog came off the lead and injured my cat on my property that would be different.

Don’t let the neighbours husband bully you.

Bluetoybear · 11/07/2021 15:17

Next door neighbours are now having a shouting row with each other! I hope the woman neighbour is ok as the man is a bully! ☹ I want to move house 😥 I don't think I have heard the last of this...I have never had any trouble with any neighbours before.
