My dog bit a cat 😪

Please be kind as I am so stressed over this.. name changed for this SadI have a 7 year old dog which is only walked on a lead 3 times a day in local park and let out in my back garden throughout the day for a wee etc. My back garden has a 6 foot fence around it so my dog can't get out. Yesterday the neighbours cat jumped into my garden and my dog ran after it and bit it on its legSad. My neighbour has taken the poor cat to the vets and has had a big vets bill for it and neighbours husband has came round at tea time demanding I pay it all. He was very vocal about it and said if I don't pay it he will 'sue/take me to court/get in touch with authority's saying my dog is dangerous etc. I am so worried as the cat has awful injuries. I have offered to pay half out of goodwill but neighbours telling me I need to pay all of the bill which I can't afford.

Ugh he really is a bellend isn't he?!

I hope he isn't getting to you, this sort of chest-puffed intimidation attempting makes me furious. Knob.

JaneSparrow13 · 11/07/2021 10:16

I'd make a point of calling my dog "such a good boy" every time I heard the neighbour, but I'm a petty cunt.

“….. and next door male neighbour says very loudly 'BLOODY DOG!'..I have told my dog to take no notice of him grin...“

Could I ask, what breed is your dog?

Bebethany · 11/07/2021 10:28

Must be hard to resist saying ‘bloody neighbours’!! 🤣

Bluetoybear · 11/07/2021 10:34

@MrsSkylerWhite

He's a dachshund 🐶

Wouldn’t worry then, Bluetoybear, unless he’s bilingual Grin

Sunbird24 · 11/07/2021 10:36

Aww, I love dachshunds! He did very well to manage to bite a cat in that case!

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 11/07/2021 10:37

He sounds like a misogynist bully, I hope he gets knob rot. Good idea just to keep telling your dog he is a good boy. 🙂

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 11/07/2021 10:38

A hunting breed then. Bred to hunt badgers, rabbits etc. No training that out of him. It's instinct. Like Greyhounds, no matter how well trained they are, something moves suddenly and they're after it before they even realise they're off the sofa.

WTF0ver · 11/07/2021 10:43

Your neighbour sounds like such a child! Albeit a bullying, aggressive one. I'd definitely be keeping a close eye on your dog and garden just in case he tries anything.

Deborino · 11/07/2021 10:43

My daughter was bitten by a staffy whilst she was walking down the street. Witnesses heard her screaming and called the police. The police couldn't do anything because the dog was on a lead so the owner was "using reasonable means to control his dog" Therefore I would say you were keeping your dog in an enclosed space and couldn't do anything more to protect the dog and anyone/anything that entered your garden. The neighbours are using empty threats.

Bluetoybear · 11/07/2021 10:53

@Deborino that's awful..your poor daughter. My dog is so gentle and good as gold out walking on his lead. He is quite a funny looking dog and children always come up and stroke him Smile He has never been any problem whatsoever with any other dogs or people Sad..In house anyone visiting..adults and children he is so good..he has been trained not to jump up, bark etc and goes to lie on his bed on command.

erasemybrain · 11/07/2021 10:59

OP if they do report to the police you won't know anyway because it will be filed straight away. Absolute nonsense from your neighbour! If he carries on being a pain you could report to the police and they can send a letter or a pcso round to tell him to wind his neck in.
Absolutely the right thing to tell him to stick his vets bill and that's bloody impressive of a dachshund!

hedgehogger1 · 11/07/2021 11:09

I'd start saying "bloody neighbour" every time you hear "bloody dog"

Fernticket · 11/07/2021 11:20

I'm am a cat owner, and as far as I am concerned, if you let your cat out to roam, then you have to accept the consequences.
If my cat got into someone else's garden and got hurt then it would be down to me to pay any vets bills. Your dog was in its own space and it sounds as if you have taken every precaution to keep him in. Your offer to pay half is more than generous.

PraiseBee · 11/07/2021 11:23

@ScrollingLeaves

There is special fencing that can be put up to keep cats in their own garden.

It is not your responsibility to pay for the cat’s injury if it came into your garden.

The neighbour must be a brute to keep harassing you this way.

Do not listen to the person two wrote your dog should be muzzled in its own garden given you say it has never bitten before.

The dog was reacting instinctively on its own territory. The cat owner was taking a risk in letting it out to roam in other gardens knowing a dog lives next door.

I'm curious, do you think if cats had to legally be kept on their own property like other animals that less people would have them as pets?
sunglassesonthetable · 11/07/2021 11:28

Sorry 😂 I do know size isn't everything ( or anything even) Dog people don't flame me! but can't help picturing the fictional scene when the coppers rock up to attend to this danger dog and it's a little ... daxy.

Wonder if figures are available on dog ownership going way back? Probably not. When I was a child, in England, early 60s, dogs were put out in the morning like cats are now and wandered about on their own. Most had their regular route. Don’t recall huge numbers of dog bites (but as a child I suppose I wouldn’t necessarily be aware).

Wonder how numbers reacted when that was banned and licenses introduced? Might give an indication for cars?

@Bluetoybear - at least you know now and your conscience should be pretty damn clear when you call your neighbours CFs! Obviously some per insurance pamphlets through their door might be lemon juice in their paper cuts, but might be good to have some on hand in case they try door knocking again when DH goes to work again.
