AIBU to never eat a banana properly in the office?

I would never just eat a banana by biting chunks from the whole fruit (which is how I would eat it at home)? I would always break a chunk off and eat it. As if taking a bite is too.... rude, suggestive?

Am I weird?

YABU: you are an overthinking weirdo for changing how you eat a banana in the office
YANBU: we all adjust how we eat bananas in case we come across like the women in the old Flake adverts

YABU, because that's ridiculous.... But i'm U too.

It started at school, because the boys would take the piss and be gross if a girl was eating a banana 'normally'. And in various workplaces there's always been at least one complete dick that you just know would make some stupid comment.

So now I just break them up to eat them, if I'm anywhere but at home.

QueenOfDuisburg · 08/07/2021 14:58

Bananas in public annoy me. It's impossible to chew one without making a squelchy schloppy sound. Terrible in a quiet office.

This post has made me laugh though. Grin

Snooks1971 · 08/07/2021 14:58

Yanbu, reminds me of this card

AIBU to never eat a banana properly in the office?
bringincrazyback · 08/07/2021 14:59

I've always eaten bananas by breaking off a bit at a time. At one time I think I did it so people wouldn't make stupid comments Grin but now it's just second nature and I don't really think about it.

cancancan · 08/07/2021 15:00

Yeah I had this one... the young "men" if the office sniggering as I ate banana in the office ... I was only 19 at the time and it took me minute to realise what they were laughing at.... idiots

IntermittentParps · 08/07/2021 15:01

YANBU, OP, I'm with you!
I don't work in an office any more though, so I can go full Flake ad if I want to.

Unless you’re practicing strengthening your gag reflex by deep throating it I’d say you’re safe don’t worry

Strawberryshitfest · 08/07/2021 15:04

Im with you. Our pervy manager once gave us all rocket lollies as a “treat” in the office during a heatwave once then sat and watched us eat them

Mixmeup · 08/07/2021 15:06

My MiL (a great stickler for etiquette) used to peel her bananas the opposite way from most: holding it by the little stalk - the bit most people use to start peeling the first strip - as if it was an ice-lolly stick, then awkwardly peeling from the blunt end.

@LaMarschallin I believe that’s actually the ‘right’ way and the way monkeys do it.

I don’t currently work in an office but I do the same OP.

Booboobadoo · 08/07/2021 15:07

I worked with a chap who used to slowly and slurpily masticate food throughout the day. With his mouth open. I had to take myself away when he had a banana.

I would eat a banana at work, but would remove the skin to a far away bin.

SporranRummager · 08/07/2021 15:08

But @LaMarschallin she is peeling and eating it correctly.

Breaking the stalk to peel from that end squashes some of the banana, spoiling it.

Leaving the stalk intact provides a nifty little handle, keeping your fingers clean.

The blunt end contains black seed remnants that you need to leave if you peel from the stalk end. If you peel from the blunt end they get pulled out.

Try it, you'll never go back to your heathen ways Wink

Northernlass99 · 08/07/2021 15:10

YANBU. I do exactly the same.

itsamegladon · 08/07/2021 15:12

When I worked in a male dominated office banana eating was open season for sexual innuendo.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 08/07/2021 15:13

Yeah, like others I've had plenty of gross comments at school/when I was a very young woman in the workplace, so I totally stopped eating bananas at work, ever.

I now work in a much more sensible workplace, and I'm old enough and tough enough to not care any more (and probably for precisely that reason I wouldn't get comments any more even in the kind of dickhead workplaces I used to be in), but I guess it's hard to fully shake off some stuff.

Angelou79 · 08/07/2021 15:15

I cannot see someone eating a banana without laughing. It’s not just the suggestiveness it’s also silly faces people pull whilst eating them!

KenAddams · 08/07/2021 15:15

@LaMarschallin

It's a very common Jilly-Cooperism to say something like: "She's such a prude that she eats bananas sideways".

My MiL (a great stickler for etiquette) used to peel her bananas the opposite way from most: holding it by the little stalk - the bit most people use to start peeling the first strip - as if it was an ice-lolly stick, then awkwardly peeling from the blunt end.

Omg I do this.. I can never peel them from the stick bit

My mum recently told me about this method! It's great, especially if the stalk bit at the top is being stubborn or you don't have a knife around to slice it off.

LaMarschallin · 08/07/2021 15:19

Mixmeup

Wow!

I wish she was still alive so that I could show her - she'd have loved that Smile

So frustrating for her that none of the next generation took on board the correct way of banana-wrangling.

Shodan · 08/07/2021 15:21

If there's a danger of a man making suggestive comments, I heartily recommend making eye contact with him then biting down aggressively on your banana. It makes them wince...

MissBridgetJones · 08/07/2021 15:21

@Tlollj

You have to do banana to mouth. Not mouth to banana.
Was just about to say this sniggeringSmile
DinosaurDiana · 08/07/2021 15:26

Yes you are !
Why touch it with your fingers when you don’t have to.

pigeonpies · 08/07/2021 15:27

I break it up in the office full of men but don't when I'm at home

Fully aware of the eyes on me when I have eaten it like a pen is

BeeDavis · 08/07/2021 15:28

@Kanaloa

Yes yabu. I doubt anyone is salivating across the office at Jenny eating a banana.
You’d be surprised! Had a weirdo in our office send an email to a girl that said ‘I like how you’re eating that banana’ Absolutely no word of a lie 😂 He was such a creep I had to involve my manager with things he said to me.
Kanaloa · 08/07/2021 15:30

Well in that case the banana isn’t really the problem, it’s just a man looking to sexually harass someone.
