I Hate Sweet Caroline

Well the song itself, originally, was pretty inoffensive, it was just that, just a song. But then it became a novelty song that people waved their arms about to when drunk and now is associated with football. But why, why, why? It has NOTHING to do with football whatsoever.

I absolutely hate it. It is irritating, annoying, irrelevant and an earworm.

I worked with a woman called Caroline who was horrible, so that makes it even worse.

I hate it. It is an irritating earworm. Give me Three Lions any day or even Vindaloo. At least they make footballing sense.

@Hopeislost

I find it really creepy, being as it was 'inspired' by a 7 year old girl ...
No it wasn’t. Neil Diamond said he wrote it for his wife, Marsha, but needed a name that scanned better lyrically for the song.

I’m curious—what have you read that indicates the 7-year-old girl as inspiration?

Cocolapew · 08/07/2021 15:31
  1. As pp said the Northern Ireland fans have been singing it for years GAWA💚🤍💚🤍
  1. Neil Diamond is a God.
AngeloMysterioso · 08/07/2021 15:34

YANBU it wasn’t even that good a song to begin with!

ShagMeRiggins · 08/07/2021 15:37

@mellicauli

It's the bit that goes "so good - so good - so good" that makes it a football song. Because when you win it so good (so good so good)
The repetition of “so good” isn’t in the song. It’s something sports fans added.

It’s just an anthem, that’s all. Football chants and anthems have their own organic starts and inside jokes. It just happens.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 15:42

@BashfulClam

3 lions doesn’t make footballing sense as they are actually panthers but doesn’t fit very well.
Panthers? No, they are definitely lions on the shirts! 3 of them.
earthyfire · 08/07/2021 15:47

I love it, it's one of those songs that make me act drunk even when I'm not. Grin

BrownEyedGirl80 · 08/07/2021 16:19

I associate it with boxing more. They always play it before the big fights.

Twospaniels · 08/07/2021 16:42

I didn’t even read you post and got an earworm.

I had to come and comment because the ear worm I have is:

Swede, carrot, lime

Arghhhh, just can’t unhear it.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 16:51

Swede carrot lime!!
😂
🍠🥕🥝

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 16:51

Couldn't find a Swede!!

megletthesecond · 08/07/2021 16:52

Scotland did much better with "I can boogie".

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 16:55

I liked the ' I can boogie' song
I remember it the first time round

mytwocats · 08/07/2021 17:02

i hate football as well but thats a song that belongs with the singer only not belted out by a crowd,it's vile

Mollypolly2610 · 08/07/2021 18:10

I named my daughter Caroline after the song - it was either that or Rosie!

Bluesheep8 · 08/07/2021 19:31

Hopeislosthe wrote the song about his wife, not a seven year old. Her name was Marsha and the name didn't fit the music so he had to change it to a three sylabble name.

And apparently whilst looking for inspiration for the 3 syllable name, saw a photograph of the then 7 year old Caroline Kennedy on the cover of Time magazine. The image gave him the name, not the sentiment behind the song.

ListenToChickens · 08/07/2021 19:36

Another Caroline here.

Will be happy to see a revival of the name, so it's not just those of us born c.1975-1980!

The song is awful, and I have cringed at many weddings etc. when it's sung to me.

All that touching hands and reaching out. Hardly in the pandemic spirit!

Bumblenums1234 · 08/07/2021 19:37

Try having it as your name and people singing it at you constantly.

Honestly I love the song but I think that is because I would actually hate my life if I didn't. I hear it at least once a day 🤣

SweatyBetty20 · 08/07/2021 19:39

Glad it’s not just me who hates being serenaded! My eyes roll 360 degrees whenever I hear it!! I wouldn’t mind so much if it was sung sober but it’s always sung by someone who is as pissed as a fart…

SecretWitch · 08/07/2021 19:39

Good thing you don’t live in Boston and attend Boston Redsox games ( baseball) Sweet Caroline is played at every game. Neil Diamond is often recruited to come out and sing it for the fans.

SingingSands · 08/07/2021 19:41

I have a soft spot for it. It's been DH's "karaoke special" for years and years. If you ever met DH you would not peg him as being a karaoke singer. Then he belts this out and it's a whole hidden side of him (damn his endless hidden talents!)

NativityDreaming · 08/07/2021 19:42

I quite like the song and don’t get why you find it offensive.

I hate that it is associated with football though.

KarmaStar · 08/07/2021 19:47

So?
Should we all start a thread about something we don't like and expect people to care?
Yes I am going,thank you.

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 08/07/2021 19:49

I like sweet caroline. However, I detest belinda carlisles heaven is a place on earth. I hear the chorus every night from the pub next door.
