I Hate Sweet Caroline

Well the song itself, originally, was pretty inoffensive, it was just that, just a song. But then it became a novelty song that people waved their arms about to when drunk and now is associated with football. But why, why, why? It has NOTHING to do with football whatsoever.

I absolutely hate it. It is irritating, annoying, irrelevant and an earworm.

I worked with a woman called Caroline who was horrible, so that makes it even worse.

I hate it. It is an irritating earworm. Give me Three Lions any day or even Vindaloo. At least they make footballing sense.

@godmum56

I am soooooo fed up of hearing "football's coming home" I loathe football anyway and will be glad when its all over. Watched the film "Nomadland" last night, it was brilliant.
I enjoyed that film too! She is a great actress. I don't like ' sweet Caroline' much.
FlaminEckVera · 08/07/2021 14:02
**@FlaminEckVera* Also, I am still waiting for *@Sandra15 to tell me why Sweet Caroline is offensive?

You will be waiting forever then, because I never said that it was and I don't think that it is. It is simply that I can't stand it.
Sorry Sandra....

You said 'Well the song itself, originally, was pretty inoffensive,' and i read it as you saying 'offensive'

Goes to book an appointment for specsavers...' Blush

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:03

World in motion is a better football song.
Three lions is catchy, but so annoying.

MargotEmin · 08/07/2021 14:04

Its joyful and upbeat with great 'chant-ability'

Marguerite2000 · 08/07/2021 14:05

Hopeislost he wrote the song about his wife, not a seven year old. Her name was Marsha and the name didn't fit the music so he had to change it to a three sylabble name.

ChippyDucks150 · 08/07/2021 14:06

I have a relative called Caroline who is an absolute cunt. Plus I'm Scottish, so on the whole I don't find it very endearing to listen to Angry

Chisandbiscuits · 08/07/2021 14:06

I have found my people. It’s utter shite. Bring back Vindaloo, that’s what you call a football anthem.

TerritorialPissings · 08/07/2021 14:07

Are you me?? It’s a standing joke in my family because of how much it irrationally irritates me. It screams of “try hard” and I can’t put my finger on why. I have no idea where it has suddenly come from and why it is associated to football.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:08

Someone on mumsnet will say that 'vindaloo ' is not giving credit to ' chicken tikka' ( other dishes are available)

WhyMeWhyNot21 · 08/07/2021 14:08

I agree. It’s pointless and irrelevant.

I also have a hatred of a woman named Caroline (other Caroline’s may be perfectly lovely) but that song grates on me….immensely.

Thecatisboss · 08/07/2021 14:12

As a Caroline I hate the song. Always have done.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:13

It's such an old song too!

butterpuffed · 08/07/2021 14:18

It's just a fun singalong song, that's why it was picked I guess. Don't understand why some have such strong feelings about something so innocuous.

No, they will say it's not authentic. Grin
Youdiditanyway · 08/07/2021 14:20

My Mum’s a Caroline and she almost hates this song as much as being called Carol.

NiceGerbil · 08/07/2021 14:21

If I've never liked that song full stop

user1471464218 · 08/07/2021 14:23

Northern Ireland football fans aka green and white army have been singing this for at least 15 years so it would have been at the last euros. Just probably not when England were playing! No gawa at this competition

newnortherner111 · 08/07/2021 14:32

Agree OP, nothing to do with England football team.

Blacktothepink · 08/07/2021 14:35

Yanbu…can’t stand it 😬

BZoma · 08/07/2021 14:35

Who is this Caroline and why are they singing this?

Also, what is Vindaloo (a op mentioned they were meant to have sung that)? Confused

SamW98 · 08/07/2021 14:39

I absolutely hate it and don't know where its appeared from as a football song all of a sudden

Personally, I hate all sing a long punching the air arms round each others shoulders type songs but that's just me.Quite happy to let others sing them and enjoy the moment

nothingnobleaboutstalking · 08/07/2021 14:39

Didn't ND say he wrote it for his ex-wife, but her name didn't work well musically in the song (Murcia?) so he saw the name Caroline in a magazine (regarding a child of a famous family) and was inspired to use the name - but the song is not about the child Hmm it is about an actual wife, just the name stood out to him as working in the song.

Backhills · 08/07/2021 14:43

It's a cheerful sing a long tune, but I don't now why football either.

It's not new for this tournament though. My club were running out to it throughout the last season we actually got to watch and we definitely weren't the first.

burritofan · 08/07/2021 14:44

World in Motion IS better but I love Sweet Caroline and it used to soothe colicky bellend tiny DD even at her screamiest, so you are being VVVVVVU.

Also, on Sunday: it’s coming home.

burritofan · 08/07/2021 14:45

Even the “na na na na” bit of Hey Jude?! Have you no SOUL?!
