Out for a meal on Sunday night

TheSunShinesBrighter · 08/07/2021 12:14

WIBU to book a meal out with friends on Sunday night bearing in mind that the whole country is apparently going to want to watch the match?

We don’t want to watch the football and someone suggested we go out as it will be really quiet.

Someone else said everything will be closed because (football rules the world) everyone will be watching the game.

Who is right?

If you can find somewhere with no tv, seems a sensible idea. Perhaps a French restaurant?

lastqueenofscotland · 08/07/2021 12:17

I’d check they aren’t getting a TV in for it! A family member of mine owns a pretty high end restaurant and they are getting a tv in and timing courses around the game.
Saturday I expect will be quiet as people will be saving themselves (and some cash) for a big Sunday.

Good point about Saturday! It’s a shame the match isn’t in the day! Would b E’s lovely to have the shops to myself! 😄

I had a meal out on last Saturday when there was another match and it was fine. Maybe slightly quieter than usual.

What a strange question Confused

Why not just get on the internet and see if you can book a restaurant, rather than asking us 'who is right'.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 11/07/2021 00:54

It might be worth checking that local restaurants haven't given their staff the night off... I was fulling expecting to work on Sunday night only to be told we would be closed as they were worried about staff calling in sick and no customers.

PRabbit · 11/07/2021 00:54

Everywhere will be closed. Even Tesco is closing. I’ll be very surprised if you’re able to book anywhere.

MrsTrustice · 11/07/2021 01:03

I work in hospitality at a big pizza sit-in chain and we are staying open.

RainbowMum11 · 11/07/2021 01:07

Places near here that aren't showing the match are closing so their staff can watch it.

LadyJaye · 11/07/2021 01:14

I would imagine you'd be relatively safe in Scotland, Wales or NI.

I LIVE for the day that MN realises that MN is not England.

MobyDicksTinyCanoe · 11/07/2021 01:19

All the restaurants round me are closed so their staff can watch it...... I'm not a fan of football but I think all the excitement and handwringing that's going on is really sweet😂😂😂

🙄🙄🙄

I live for the day certain MNers stop trying to turn everything into ‘The rest of the UK versus England’.

If the OP was in Scotland, Wales or NI, she’d have said so and wouldn’t be having the issue in the first place.

Tesco is usually closed on Sunday evenings anyway, surely? Or are we talking the little Express stores?
NeedNewKnees · 11/07/2021 09:00

@Funnylittlefloozie, yes the express ones

Ellmau · 11/07/2021 17:25

Hope you enjoy your meal, OP.

I wonder what the poster with the special train trip decided to do...

newnortherner111 · 11/07/2021 17:30

@WomanStanleyWoman the first person who needs educating that England is not the whole of the UK has blonde hair and serial infidelity.

ImInStealthMode · 11/07/2021 17:36

We had a meal out on Wednesday night for a family birthday and it was lovely. Restaurant wasn't packed but busy enough with people who don't care about the football; despite appearances there are plenty of us about.

I'd imagine given the last year and a half a lot of restaurants (and their staff) would rather take the business if it's there than lose yet another days takings. I've not seen any near us announce they're not opening tonight.

Have a nice meal OP Smile

If the OP were in NI she would need to check which restaurants are open because tomorrow is the Twelfth of July and there are a lot of places closed this evening.

OP bit late now but just contact the restaurants you're interested in or host a non football evening.

Againstmachine · 11/07/2021 17:50

The majority of England won't be watching it contary to popular belief.

Because Wales and Scotland don't have large English populations (don't know about NI but even then I'd have thought that a lot of people would watch the final whoever was in it).

This thread is ample illustration of my point that football takes over though -Tesco closing and not being able to go out for a meal - or if you do, they'll have a TV to show it? For goodness sake.

How do you know have you asked everyone personally?

Yes and also loads of NI people will be watching the match. We may not spend the whole time shrieking 'it's coming home' or anything but I think most people here are wishing England well.

Againstmachine · 11/07/2021 17:58

Nope but TV figures usually give good guidance., The problem with football fans is they can't see that not everyone needs to here them shouting ingerland.

Seriously? Because of football? That's scrambled my brain.

Unless it's a express most will have been shut at latest 5pm
