@flashbac

Imagine.
Oh I was just thinking this earlier op!

My dh and I were just saying how great it is to have a high profile leader of integrity and empathy who embodies totally different leadership values to most politicians and yet is extremely successful at leading.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 14:13

He also has a lovely house.. I have home envy !

adrianmolesmole · 08/07/2021 15:45

I'm another one who knows nothing about football, but I would love to see a movie about Gareth Southgate's life. He's had quite the ups and downs.

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 16:40

Who would play Southgate in the movie?
.. can't think of any actor who resembles him.

KrakowDawn · 08/07/2021 16:55

Toby Stephens with a dye job.
Or Tom Hardy if v thin.

Anton DuBeke Grin not sure if I’ve spelt that right! Grin with a beard of course … ha!
shallIswim · 08/07/2021 18:32

@Earlydancing

You have no idea what he's like. He's won four football matches with a team of multi millionaires who do nothing but train and receive the ultimate care and attention.
We do know he listens, and has surrounded himself with a wide range of talents, many of whom don't come from his world. That's enough for me as an improvement on what we have leading our country.
the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 19:03

Anton du Beke!! Yes.
Can he act though ?

Frownette · 08/07/2021 19:06

Head of state perhaps?

willstarttomorrow · 08/07/2021 19:24

Instead maybe the voting public could hold politicians to the same standards?

magsbagsfags · 08/07/2021 19:28

@Teaandbicciesplease

And looks good in a suit.
Gareth Southgate?!

God knows. I think so..?! Grin Just a vague resemblance amused me. I’m easily pleased.
the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 21:31

Gareth has strong features.
I wouldn't fancy him at all , but he seems nice enough and a hard worker. His wife looks lovely and normal too.
After the Beckham's and the Rooney's etc it's a breath of fresh air!

That’s fine. The more Gareth Southgates and Christopher Ecclestons there are to go round, the better. You put your ticket back in the tub. Grin

I'm not an England fan but I have a lot of admiration for Gareth Southgate. He chose his direction several years ago and learned his trade very well. He's absolutely formidable as an international manager because that's what he's always focused on.

I think he conducts himself tremendously well, is very confident in making his own decisions (don't recall him changing his tactics to appease the calls of the press or fans and is subsequently selecting players who alone wouldn't set the world alight but as a team they all work in sync and enhance one another), and his honesty is very refreshing. I recall him making a comment about how England fans behave as though they have a rich history of success and actually they just don't. I liked that. I think his nature is similar to that of Klopp (also not a Liverpool fan!)

the80sweregreat · 08/07/2021 21:54

Gareth Southgate had to live down that missed penalty for years. It must have been hard for him I think.

Threewheeler1 · 08/07/2021 22:04

Yes please.
I'd like Marcus Rashford in politics too.

Mookie81 · 08/07/2021 23:15
Marcus Rashford is awesome.

This is also really interesting

www.theplayerstribune.com/articles/raheem-sterling-england-it-was-all-a-dream
Made me tearful.
And really illustrates the issues our black boys face growing up.
The media are insidious.

shallIswim · 09/07/2021 08:05

Yes that missed penalty. He's never hidden from it or dissembled. Quite I like the nation's leader, who serves from every mistake or lie he's ever told.

Quite unlike! And swerves. Must proofread!
Eskarina1 · 09/07/2021 08:30

Obviously being a football manager is different to being prime minister. Just as writing funny articles is different to being a prime minister. I think Gareth Southgate has more transferable skills. Boris Johnson should have followed a Giles Brandreth route.

Plus it seems like these days the only qualification needed is playing well to the press and being popular. In which case a successful England football manager with management skills, the courage of his convictions and apparent integrity might be our best hope.

Bryonyshcmyony · 09/07/2021 08:31

Can I just pop in to say I'm amazed that people are serious about this.

shallIswim · 09/07/2021 08:43

@Bryonyshcmyony I think the subtleties of this thread are about comparing the transferable skills
Of two particular men. Along with trustworthiness. Quite interesting in fact
