To think Kate Middleton isn’t actually self isolating...

Not one to start rumours... but I think she isn’t self isolating.

I think she was just pretending to so that she doesn’t need to watch another boring football match .

Why should she lose her identity because she's married. I'll stick with Kate Middleton.

RickiTarr · 09/07/2021 21:27

@seashells11

Why do people always object when people use her maiden name. I thought most mumsnetters hated the idea of giving up their name and taking the mans.. What would they prefer we call her.
It’s ridiculous to assume a woman of her generation would find her own birth name anathema, isn’t it? Most married women of her age use their own name at least part time. Obviously she has protocols to observe in public life, but there’s every reason to imagine she’s very proud of being a Middleton as well as a Windsor-by-marriage.

TBH, I think the posters who post bossily that she isn’t Kate Middleton are old-fashioned sorts who don’t overlap with the feminist core of Mumsnet much.

Drovememad · 09/07/2021 21:42

@seashells11 I'd stick with the name she's chosen, it's not Middleton!

I'd be irritated if someone kept calling me by my maiden name, when I've chosen to take my husbands name.

ScrambledSmegs · 09/07/2021 21:42

Apparently she's never gone by the name 'Kate', she's always been Catherine. 'Calling her Kate Middleton is a press thing, like Lady Di and Madge (Madonna). Remember when they called her Waitie Katie? They're not known for respecting people's proper names.

Anyway, she probably is self-isolating, can't see her missing Wimbledon for anything else.

When did she choose?

No she was always Kate. All her school and Uni friends knew her as Kate, so did William.

What happened is that when they got engaged, they all started referring to her as Catherine in public. Probably partly because it’s more official and (I suspect) partly to keep her private and public selves separate. I think K&W have taken very good psychological advice on various aspects of handling their fame and raising their children in public. It shows sometimes.

KillingMeDeftly · 09/07/2021 22:24

Yes, I remember watching their engagement interview and William clearly refers to her as Kate.

ElvishFun · 09/07/2021 22:44

Whatever most Mumsnetters decide in relation to their own names, she has clearly decided to take her husband’s name.

onlyhereforthecake · 09/07/2021 22:48

In fairness, I am not sure you really have the choice when you marry the future King of England. There's a whole package there.

The entire Meghan debacle proves it, and Meghan barely rocked the boat but look at the level of abuse she got.

Can you explain your workings out?

To me it seems clear that that’s one of the choices they didn’t get to make. Just as they didn’t get to decide to elope or not, or to give their DC exotic names or not.

Certain things are dictated by royal protocol, and one of those is how a future Queen Consort will be styled in public.

She didn’t have the option to have her office put out a statement the week before her wedding saying “BTW, Kate Middleton will be keeping her own name for work purposes.” She HAD to be known officially as “Catherine/ HRH Duchess of Cambridge”.

So we don’t know whether she would have (or has) retained use of her own name for certain things.

Maybe you would be irritated but she might not be. How do we know she wouldn't be irritated by Kate "Windsor" or whatever the royals call themselves.

There is no such title as 'King of England'
onlyhereforthecake · 10/07/2021 21:59

pretty sure England is part of the UK, so it can't have been too hard to figure out who I meant

I know who you mean but that will not be his title. Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of Her other Realms and Territories Queen, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Fait
