To be annoyed about having a day off declined

I've been on a WFH campaign for a pretty big company for around 8 months. I booked last Eid off with just under 2 weeks notice because I wasn't sure of the date until it was closer to the time. That one was declined which is reasonable. The second Eid is coming up on the 20th and I put my request through on 23rd June, checked my schedule a couple of days ago to see I've been scheduled for that day, but my request was still pending. I contacted the company stating that I'd really like to have it off since it's Eid and I've not put any requests in otherwise over the last 8 months. They said they'd look into it. I checked the requests this morning to see it had been declined due to 'no availability' 😡 AIBU to think this is just lazy scheduling and they can afford to give me the day off? We're required to give 2 weeks notice at least, I thought booking almost a month in advance would be notice enough! They are also constantly posting reductions throughout the day since it's not busy enough atm so they can afford for people to take the day off paid/unpaid. I'm just extremely annoyed because this will be the first Eid where everything will actually be open and somewhat normal :(

What a shame. It does fall at a very popular time. I put my July leave request in in January as school holidays are always a problem.
Don't suppose there's any way you are off shift this Monday? Because if you were and offered a swap I guarantee you'd get responses!

OP, Ive previously offered a swap (and was sent a banquet in thanks Grin)
I hope one of your colleagues come through.

I know I should be more flexible with the days I have off, but DH has the 20th off so it wouldn't make sense to me to have any other day off and just spend Eid by myself, plus missing the main day of it anyway. I was happy to cover Christmas shifts for others but I guess so far no one is willing to do the same for me!
@Calmdown14 I do actually have Mondays off and did put it up on my shift swap offer Grin
Hopefully I won't still be in this workplace by the time the next Eid comes around so I'll just put up with this one for now I guess.

Just wanted to update so I can vent - everyone on my team on this campaign is working that day so I can't even swap shifts, and yet I was told there's no holiday availability for this day. My team leader has also asked around at the main office and they're also working. There are no other Muslims on my team so it's not a case of multiple people booking this day off and leaving them short. I've raised this multiple times and just feel completely ignored. Other people have been swapping shifts as normal and my request is just there Sad. If I didn't need the money I would've just left, although I'm currently waiting to hear back from other vacancies I've applied for in the meantime.

Oh @Lira91 that's really not fair. So are you saying that no one is off that day? Is it because no one is permitted the day off because of a big campaign? At my work we were not allowed to book time off in January as it's our busiest period. This has been relaxed though.

My office would always allow holidays for special occasions and Eid would totally fall under this. I wonder if they know how important it is. If they don't it's pretty bad!

Lira91 · 15/07/2021 19:03

@ClaireEclair I can't think of anything other than it being the day after restrictions are lifted? But this wouldn't make much if a difference for my department since I work in the deliveries department.
I shouldnt feel bad for making a fuss but I've never had to fight for a day off on Eid before.

I think You should make a point that this is a religious celebration and that religion is a protected characteristic, it is one day, is that really going to negatively affect the outcome of the project?

It's rather naive in the eyes of management as to make this one accommodation for
one member of staff is more likely to have a positive effect on your work ethic where as the consequence of ignoring requests like this is more likely to have a negative effect on the business as resentments start to build....

If other people asked first then it's first come first served I'm afraid.
