To worry because I ate old eggs that float

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 12:16

I’m an idiot.

I had eggs yesterday and the day before. I thought the box said 9 July but just noticed it says 9 June. I store them in the cupboard now the fridge (kitchen isn’t heated and old house so unlikely to have been hot but temperature will have fluctuated). Ironically I ate them as I’ve had a bit of tummy trouble and wanted something bland! But I haven’t hurled since nor has my daughter who had them last night with me.

There were 3 left in the box when I noticed the date and I tried the float test - two sank but stood on end and one full-on floated. Fuck. Are we going to get sick? I just had my second jab so already feeling shite.

So so annoyed with myself!

YABU: You’ll be fine
YANBU: Get the sick bucket ready

Sorry that should say I store them in the cupboard NOT the fridge.

Eggs are supposed to be stored in the cupboard. If they were off you'd have known when you cracked the shell. You'll be fine.

Neuts346 · 07/07/2021 12:18

Ummm that’s pretty out of date. BUT I’m guessing if it was going to happen you’d have been ill already?

DonLewis · 07/07/2021 12:19

Properly off eggs stink. Properly stink. You'll most likely be fine.

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 12:20

I didn’t crack them because I boiled them. They looked ok I think? No noticeable smell. Though I did notice one egg was yellower than the other.

They do stink, and I'm certain you would taste it! The one time I got one, it literally smelled fishy Envy

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 07/07/2021 12:21

when eggs are off it is really obvious - so don't worry.

cloudsinjune · 07/07/2021 12:23

I wouldn't worry, as per pps, off eggs are obviously off and eggs do generally last a long time

BarbaraofSeville · 07/07/2021 12:26

If they tasted fine, they almost certainly were fine.

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 12:28

I think they tasted fine. I left lots of the white because it was a bit hard and rubbery but I’m not a huge egg fan and also I cook them way longer than I should as I get distracted.

Eggs last for ages - best before dates are very much a guide and I often eat eggs 3-4 weeks past

Eggs are with edible or off and if they're off you'll know immediately

Ninkanink · 07/07/2021 12:33

You would absolutely have known if they were rotten, it’s unmistakable.

They were fine - old eggs are not bad to eat unless they’re actually rotten.

Palavah · 07/07/2021 12:35

Make sure you have access to a well-ventilated area for farts.

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 12:36

Thanks for the reassurance. I’m so annoyed as I checked the date - saw 9th and a J and thought ok that’s fine! But no - June not July. Eggs don’t usually last that long in our house.

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 07/07/2021 12:39

It’s fine. They can last for months past the official date - that’s done for supermarket stocks and has nothing to do with whether they’re still fine to eat. Years ago (in my lifetime, so not that long ago, I’m only in my 40s) there weren’t any use by dates on groceries. People just used their eyes and smell to judge.

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 12:48

I wish that third bloody egg had sank! I knew there was a risk I was fuelling my anxiety. Confused

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 07/07/2021 13:03

But it literally makes no difference. If they sink they have less air in them, that’s all, which means they’re fresh. As they get older there’s more air inside them so they float. Even if they float they’re still perfectly fine to eat.

If there was no smell - you’d know it if you smelt it, it’s absolutely rank - then you’ve 0% to worry about.

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 13:09

That’s so reassuring thank you.

As others have said, bad eggs stink, if they smelled and tasted ok they would have been fine. I made pancakes at the weekend with an egg I found in the back of my fridge that was dated 20th May, they were fine, tasted great and no after effects.

StylishMummy · 07/07/2021 13:13

I've eaten eggs over 2 months past their date, you KNOW when an egg is off from smell or taste. There's no need to worry, the dates on eggs are stupidly short compared to how long they actually last

MoMuntervary · 07/07/2021 13:14

I'm always eating eggs way past their date. It's fine. The floating test is most useful if you want to poach an egg as if they're a bit old, they don't hold their shape so well. I prefer older eggs for boiling as they seem easier to peel.

Hope your jab side effects pass quickly.

claralara42 · 07/07/2021 13:15

Eggs last for months, but don't keep them in the fridge.

I've eaten eggs that were at least 3 months postdate. They're fine unless they smell bad.

Iggly · 07/07/2021 13:19

If all of the eggs had floated and they tasted rank, then I’d understand your concern.

Stop finding things to worry about 😂

I’d change my life if I could follow this advice! Grin

You know when eggs are off. Believe me you know!!

And even if you had no sense of taste nor smell and ate them, they'd be straight back up in a few seconds/minutes.

You're seriously worrying about nothing!! :)
