To worry because I ate old eggs that float

I’m an idiot.

I had eggs yesterday and the day before. I thought the box said 9 July but just noticed it says 9 June. I store them in the cupboard now the fridge (kitchen isn’t heated and old house so unlikely to have been hot but temperature will have fluctuated). Ironically I ate them as I’ve had a bit of tummy trouble and wanted something bland! But I haven’t hurled since nor has my daughter who had them last night with me.

There were 3 left in the box when I noticed the date and I tried the float test - two sank but stood on end and one full-on floated. Fuck. Are we going to get sick? I just had my second jab so already feeling shite.

So so annoyed with myself!

YABU: You’ll be fine
YANBU: Get the sick bucket ready

@Mixmeup

If all of the eggs had floated and they tasted rank, then I’d understand your concern.

Stop finding things to worry about

I’d change my life if I could follow this advice! Grin

😂 I know what you mean. I am a worrier and will massively over think things at times
DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 07/07/2021 13:32

I eat eggs weeks out of date.

I stopped looking at the date on eggs when I found out that they smell like hell if they are off.
That's enough for me!

If it smells ok then it is ok!

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 14:50

I didn’t notice any smell so that’s a good sign. And I still feel fine…

They don’t float because they’ve gone off, they float because they have more air in them.

Float test is a measure of age, not gone-off-ness!

Of course, it’s a useful indicator that they MIGHT have gone off - but that’s all.

If they float, it just means you should crack them into a separate bowl first to check they’re OK (from smell!) instead of directly into other ingredients that you might waste.

You’ll be fine Grin

Hard boiled?

Mixmeup · 07/07/2021 15:03

Yes hard boiled. Very as I get distracted easily. Smile

I think you are safe then! It probably wasn't off anyway but an extra hard boiled egg makes it even safer in my eyes! 😆

CorianderBee · 07/07/2021 21:52

You'll know if the egg was off. It fucking reeks. The ones you ate were fine.

NiceGerbil · 07/07/2021 22:09

Eggs keep for yonks.

If they're off they smell really obvious.

Don't worry.

ladyface69 · 07/07/2021 22:35

Hello! I have over 50 chickens and can categorically tell you that you would CERTAINLY know if your eggs were off. The shell is porus and you would have been able to smell the sulphur reek coming out of it. As pp's have said the float test only shows how much air is in the egg and can help you tell how fresh it is but not whether or not it is good/bad to eat.
When I hatch chicks sometimes they don't all make it through the incubation period, and if you're not careful they explode! And no one wants warm rotten egg soup everywhere.
Enjoy your eggs.
