Seriously? £86 for family entry?

This is for a visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park for 2 adults and 2 children.

I mean, who can afford £86 on tickets? That’s before you’ve factored in petrol, extortionate icecreams / coffees and no doubt a huge gift shop that you are forced to exit through with kids.

We are professionals on decent enough wages - we’re not rolling in it but we are doing ok. But that is truly beyond our reach for a single day out!

I’m thinking too of all the lower income families that I work with every day as a primary school teacher, for whom this couldn’t even be a consideration. Yorkshire children who don’t have a hope in hell of ever going to Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

AIBU to think that it’s really too much?

Keep the riff raft out Confused I've been there a lot and it certainly isn't what I would describe as a middle class enclave!

Glitterkitten24 · 04/07/2021 20:46

We are looking at Blackpool Pleasure Beach for next week -£123 for a family of 4 for one day!
Usually there are discounts/ codes than mean it’s around £75 for a family.

Comedycook · 04/07/2021 20:46

Days out are generally really expensive I find. Standard cinema trip for a family is about £50. Theme parks are over a hundred...I cannot see how average families can afford this.

Silversun83 · 04/07/2021 20:47

@perciphonepuma - That's crazy!

CroydianSlip · 04/07/2021 20:47

Paulton's was twice that for a family of 5! We will never go again!

warmfluffytowels · 04/07/2021 20:49

I don't think £21pp is that extortionate for something like a zoo, considering you're often there for 5-6 hours and they have play parks and interactive things to do as well.

They've been closed more than they've been open recently and it costs a fortune to feed all those animals. They need to make money somewhere.

SleepingStandingUp · 04/07/2021 20:49

Everywhere is similar tbh. We paid £30 for an adult and concession and then o get in free as DSs carer and the babies are too young but I'm a few years that'll be £100+. Tesco vouchers help with some places

MaMelon · 04/07/2021 20:50

It seems to be the standard cost for a day out for a standard two adult/two kids family. Costs a bloody fortune.

Thehop · 04/07/2021 20:50

@biggirlknickers look at gullivers in Rotherham. Was v good value for us.

Google for discount codes

TSSDNCOP · 04/07/2021 20:50

I have a great one for you all.

There is now a zip line at Bluewater. You zoom down from the top of the pit wall to somewhere near the lake.

It is, wait for it, FIFTY POUNDS PER PERSON

For an experience lasting about 20 seconds.

LakieLady · 04/07/2021 20:51

@KingdomScrolls

It's that the on the day price? Lots of the places offer discount for pre-booking, you can use Clubcard vouchers etc. A zoo costs a lot to maintain, it's not like a theme park that costs little when it's closed due to a pandemic animals still need feeding and caring for
You can get great bargains with Clubcard vouchers. We promised to take DGD to a small local zoo a couple of years and it would have cost nearly £90 for 4 adults and a 3-year old. By using the vouchers we got the tickets for not much more than £30.
AquaticLicence · 04/07/2021 20:51

I don't think it's that expensive for a full day out. There are lots of things that are far more expensive on a per hour basis.

Ellpellwood · 04/07/2021 20:52

The national trust charges about £18 to ponk around a lake at Stourhead so I don't think it's too bad.

We always stay over at theme parks ans turn it into a mini break with one day free etc.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 04/07/2021 20:52

Agree its expensive but we'd easily spend most of the day at Yorkshire Wildlife Park so we'd get our moneys worth, we usually just take food and drink with us as food costs at those places are extortionate!

crackofdoom · 04/07/2021 20:53

Do they not have any special offers- ie, year's entry for the price of a day ticket, locals' days etc? I won't usually pay full price to go to a "big ticket" attraction, but if you look around there are usually deals of some kind. For example, Newquay Zoo costs similar but has a locals' day once a year when entry is 3-4 quid, the Eden Project has a an annual locals' pass which is cheaper than a normal day ticket, Plymouth Aquarium is extortionate but a standard ticket gives you free entry for a year, etc etc...

Marmite27 · 04/07/2021 20:53

I looked at it a few weeks ago and was gobsmacked.

It’s chargeable for over 3’s too, not over 5’s. We used to have annual passes, but we’re priced out now, which is a shame.

Jumpingintosummer · 04/07/2021 20:54

We took the DC to Edinburgh Zoo a fortnight ago. 4 adults and 1DC as DC1&2 over 15.
Entry £100.60
Drinks x 2 £19.60
Ice cream x 4 £24
Gift shop £19.80
= £163.40.
We drove 180 mile round trip and took a picnic.

Deadleaf29 · 04/07/2021 20:54

They’re not a social enterprise to provide entertainment for deprived children, they’re a business, and one hit hard by covid. They obviously have plenty of people willing to pay it so good luck to them. Lots of things are out of reach of lots of children- it’s just how it is. There’s loads of free or low cost activities, I don’t see why Paultons or Yorkshire Wildlife Park should keep their prices artificially low, anymore than Virgin Holidays should keep trips to Disney World low enough cost for deprived youngsters too.

GameSetMatch · 04/07/2021 20:55

It’s just cost me £91 for digger land tickets I could of passed out when I saw the price but seems everything is so expensive these days. Blackpool Zoo is much cheaper and better in my opinion.

Wow! Do people actually pay it?!
Homemadearmy · 04/07/2021 20:55

We use Tesco vouchers as much possible for days out, take a picnic and our own drinks It makes it much more affordable

Pinuporc · 04/07/2021 20:55

We live near a different wildlife park and is probably quite similar in price. We take our own picnic, use club card vouchers , or do for birthday treat , but it does take the whole day.

EatingAllThePies · 04/07/2021 20:57

I've never seen discounts for YWP but it's a full day out. We paid slightly less for Gullivers recently as we used to have YWP annual passes but found YWP better value in terms of activities. As others have said it's absolutely made up for picnics so I've never actually bought food there!

Kanaloa · 04/07/2021 20:58

Everything like that seems so expensive at the moment. We try and keep costs low if possible - for example we just wouldn’t get ice creams/coffee inside the park, we would always bring packed lunches for the kids. Also, I’ve noticed many attractions can be cheaper if booked online so we do that often.

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 04/07/2021 20:59

Wildlife parks are massively expensive and need to cover very significant costs. They aren't charities !
