Does this list sound about the right amount for first year of school uniform for a child?

1 school bag
1 lunch box
1 pencil case
1 water bottle
1 school book bag
1 school gym bag
2 pairs of gym shorts
2 school polos for gym
1 hoodie for gym
1 pair gym shoes
1 pair of school shoes
1 school waterproof fleece lined jacket
1 school blazer
1 school tie
6 school shirts
4 school pinafores
1 school skirt
5 cardigans
5 pack knee high socks
5 pack white frill socks
3 pairs of tights

I'd disagree with most posters and get a new reception starter 5 jumpers/cardigans, I bought 3 for DS1 and ended up putting a wash on almost every night as there'd always be lunch/mud/paint on them.

littleducks · 04/07/2021 17:53

I would be cautious and find out about covid changes. We have two days on pe kit now, so whereas my older ones had plimsolls, t shirt and shorts coming home at half term my youngest wears tracksuit and trainers instead. No point in five school jumped this year as maximum can wear in week is three.

Unlike other posters this year we had to send in pencil cases as no sharing resources on table as previously.

Dobbyisahouseelf · 04/07/2021 17:56

I would reduce the following:
5 x shirts
2 x skirts or pinafores
2 x cardigans
Then more tights.

GreyhoundG1rl · 04/07/2021 17:57

You don't need four pinafores or five cardigans. Unless you only wash weekly?

Drbrowns · 04/07/2021 18:01

Get more then one tie. Yogurt or paint always seem to land on it at some stage every day in our house for some reason

Passthecake30 · 04/07/2021 18:01

Wow that’s alot. My 2 (boy and girl) had 2 jumpers / cardigan and 2 trousers /skirts and 4 tshirts. 5 pairs of tights/socks and one PE kit.

SimonJT · 04/07/2021 18:04

Won’t she need five pairs of tights?

I would get a few water bottles, they get lost all the time.

IWouldLikeToKnow · 04/07/2021 18:05

I need a fresh uniform/PE kit for each day. He comes home filthy each day - it's just how he is.
We both work full time so would rather have enough for each day than have to do a uniform wash mid week if I don't have to.

tiredanddangerous · 04/07/2021 18:05

Way too much. Five cardigans is nuts.

Marmite27 · 04/07/2021 18:08

@MarjorieBouvier

Primary? They do not need 2 sets of gym kit. 1 will do.
Mine does PE twice a week. They go in in their kit, and stay in it all day. They do PE on conservative days. We definitely need two full sets of kit.

I’d get more tights. In the winter we needed a pair a day. I think it was about £10 for 10 pairs at Asda. 5 pairs are unworn in the wardrobe, so I’d say 5 is about right.

Angel2702 · 04/07/2021 18:10

We wash clothes every day so have never needed more than 2 jumpers. I bought far too much for my elder ones. We have five polos as they are white so don’t do white load as often but two skirts or trousers are fine. Definitely more tiggy’s as they seem to rip a hole every wear.

Screamingcowboy99 · 04/07/2021 18:11

I bought five jumpers, five polo shirts and five pairs of trousers for my DC. I don't like having to worry about washing and ironing school uniform midweek. I usually end up doing some, but like the pressure of not needing to.

They don't need pencil cases etc in reception. Ours have banned things like school bags, book bags etc due to covid. Kids bring packed lunch and their coat, that's it. They do PE once a week and go into school wearing their PE Kit. Mine go in joggers, polo shirt and school jumper if they need it.

Tontu · 04/07/2021 18:17

It depends on whether the school expects full clean uniform every day due to covid.
Also, whether they wear pe kit all day, or change whilst there.

BakewellGin1 · 04/07/2021 18:20

From memory DS at that age had..
6 White Polo's (2pk from Asda)
6 Trousers (2pk from Asda)
3 School Logo Jumpers
1 Shoes
1 Trainers
1 Plimsolls
1 Shorts and Tshirt for PE
10 Socks (they go into a black hole here)
1 Book Bag
1 Warm/Waterproof Coat
2 Hat/Scarf and Gloves
2 water bottles as DS lost them regularly

All Asda as washed better then M&S (tried those for nursery)
So relatively cheap but lasted well

No pencil case as not allowed
No pack lunch as had Dinners rnen

Marmite27 · 04/07/2021 18:21

We had:

6 shirts
3 pinafores / 3 skirts
3 cardigans / 3 jumpers
3 ties
3 gingham dresses
2 PE shirts / 2 PE Shorts
2 PE hoodies / 2 PE joggers

6 knee socks (3 pairs unworn)
5 pairs white ankle socks (2nd set bought for summer term as they were very grubby)
10 pairs of tights (5 pairs unworn)

2 water bottles
2 3-in-1 type coats
Book bag
School shoes
PE Trainers
Indoor pumps

No lunch bag require as KS1 have free school dinners.

DC preferred pinny’s and cardis, but we had skirts and jumpers handed down from family. We did 3 days pinny’s and 2 days skirts Autumn term when there was no PE. As they wear PE kit 2 days, spring and summer term, 3 full sets of uniform were ample. We’ve had to replace school shoes, and change the 3-in-1 type coats for a rain Mac in the summer term. School is very strict, no summer dresses until after Easter and none in the autumn term. Children are sent home if they turn up in them.

Cheesypea · 04/07/2021 18:27

Id ditch the accessories apart from the book bag and water bottle- covid permitting.
Theres tons of clothes in that list- if you must buy all that make sure you'll be able to take some back in September if needs be.
Dd may want to wear trousers or a summer dress in September.
There are so many clothing options in primary. Dd will have her own ideas about what she wants to wear very soon.

Mollylikestodance · 04/07/2021 18:30

More tights!

Less jumpers/cardigans. I had 5 but honestly would have been fine with 2 or 3 at the most

Tontu · 04/07/2021 18:34

If she's in England she won't need a lunch bag in infants.

Kanaloa · 04/07/2021 18:35

It’s a lot of shirts and cardigans - she will have a shirt for every day then one left over which seems a lot. Other than that it sounds fine. Does she need a school bag and book bag and gym bag? I know some schools require a separate book bag but that seems a lot to me.

Kanaloa · 04/07/2021 18:36

Four dresses seems a lot too, I think two would be fine.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/07/2021 18:36

More tights.

I had 6 of shirt, jumper/cardi, (yours might be less mucky than mine,so fewer) skirt/pinafore or trousers,

12 pairs of socks pants and vests as those bastards go missing.
1 blazer
1 coat

I had two pairs of pe shorts and t shirts for primary as they came in packs of two and were cheap.

LIZS · 04/07/2021 18:37

Do they even change for gym to start with? Let alone need two sets. Many schools just do shoes.

BlackeyedSusan · 04/07/2021 18:37

Having six meant I was not underpressure to wash and dry mid week.

YerAWizardHarry · 04/07/2021 18:38

I’ll go against the general consensus and say we still have 5 jumpers for DS and he’s going into Primary 5. He is covered in goodness knows what every day Envy and I hate that “oh shit I don’t have clean uniform” feeling on a Thursday evening

LIZS · 04/07/2021 18:38

Nor a blazer for Reception. Is it an independent?
