Kid told to go and chase the birds

326 replies

GOODCAT · 04/07/2021 13:35

I don't have kids, but was at the coast this morning when I overheard an adult, presume mum, tell a young girl to go and chase the birds, said in a way that meant she was to go and entertain herself by doing this.

My own parents would have told me off for this and to be kind to other living creatures.

It always annoys me when I see kids chasing birds and their parents saying nothing, but to actively encourage a kid to do so is a first.

AIBU to find it sad that this kid was being encouraged to chase birds for no other purpose than her own entertainment.

Sorry, what animals like to be chased by humans and not their own kind?

Dogs?

I need to know!

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:10

Yes dogs doesn't have to be humans tho
I've seen cats tease dogs I've seen birds tease cats

And to whoever saod I'm not as nice a person as I think I am well no I'm a right cunt at times but I still don't hurt animals

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 15:28

No, I asked about humans.

Which wild animals enjoy being chased by humans?

FindYourPorpoise · 06/07/2021 15:30

@Greenrubber

It's not a pointless dig at all I am not claiming to be superior in any way I'm showing that people that seem to have a problem with birds being chased by children are still more than happy to stick them on their dinner plate

Would it be OK if the child caught them and then ate them? I suppose it would yes

And your sticking up for birds when you know exactly what happens to a dairy cow yet you choose to participate in that?
And I choose to not interfere when my child chases a bird
No one is perfect but you are making such a big deal out of it!
Even if they did get scared we don't really want them eating all the shitty snacks parents feed their kids anyway
I've also never seen a bird die of fear because they have been chased by a child
Plus all the shitty food they eat properly puts more strain on their heart than to fly which is what a bird does

The amount of gulls and pigeons that are around is probably damaging to the smaller birds and its us that have encouraged that by making food so available to these birds so maybe more people should chase them off

Anyway I won't be stopping my child from chasing a pigeon or a seagull I genuinely don't care what anyone thinks of this either

You can call me a bad parent if you like but I'm not
Like I said we all have a conscience and mine is clear I don't judge other people for their choices. I have not been vegan my whole life I've also participated but I'm aware of the consequences of my actions more as a result
But I still don't believe my DD is terrifying birds

I dont think I can add anything else

You're not claiming to be superior? Then why do you keep mentioning being a vegan and make the assumption that everyone else on this thread not only eats meat but eat 'battery chickens'?

I think you have a completely misplaced sense on superiority on this issue and seem totally unwilling to listen.

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:31

You already answered your own question
🤦‍♀️

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 15:32

Which WILD animals enjoy being chased by humans? When did I answer that exactly?

A domestic dog is a pet and not a wild animal.

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:32

I'm letting you know not everyone who let's their kid chase a pigeon or two is for animal cruelty

SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 15:35

Right, so you’re obviously not able to answer my question.

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:39

Dog there's one which you said yourself

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:40

This is getting old now I don't have the same views as you we don't all have to agree

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 06/07/2021 15:41

@romdowa

Let's just hope they aren't ducks or swans. They will chase you back , which discovered one night while very drunk 😅
Grin me and my daughter once got chased by a gaggle of geese. There were loads of them and it was pretty terrifying 😅
WaltzingBetty · 06/07/2021 15:50

Alot of animals do like to be chased what makes anyone know which ones do and which ones don't

Animal welfare science, evolution and common sense. There is no situation where birds try and solicit chasing behaviour from humans, there is a metabolic and evolutionary detriment to being chased and from a common sense point of view, no prey animal likes being chased and chasing animals that are smaller than you and forcing them to change their normal activity pattern by making them fly away is not enjoyable for them.

I don't think birds are scared when my child chases them that's my view and I've seen no evidence to prove otherwise
Ok so you refuse to give animals the benefit if the doubt? You want proof of harm/suffering before you'll consider changing your behaviour ? That's doesn't sound very nice of you.
Have you ever considered that it's simply that you value your child's pleasure over the negative impact on the birds and you are prioritising that? It would at least be a more honest stance

And I'm not really bothered if you don't think I'm a nice person or not
My point is that you seem to think being a vegan gives you some sort of moral superiority whilst simultaneously claiming you'd only stop your child chasing vulnerable animals if someone proves to you she's harming them. That's not a very considerate or kind stance.

And yes you are happy to participate it horrible industries yet you think me not telling my daughter off for chasing a bird is a problem
My point is that your stance isn't rational - I'm honest about the harm I do - you lie to yourself to justify the harm you do

I think you are the one with the problem and you don't need to have everyone agree with you because that won't happen in real life
I couldn't care less if you agree with me or not. You clearly prefer to deny science so that you can persist in your delusion that birds find being chased fun. I'm simply pointing out that is an irrational opinion

You are of course perfectly entitled to be irrational

@Greenrubber

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 15:51

@smidgenofapigeon

You actually asked what animal not what wild animal in which you answered your own question

WaltzingBetty · 06/07/2021 15:51

@Greenrubber

Dog there's one which you said yourself
Oh yeah dogs love being chased by small children.

Wonder why the prevalence of dog bite injuries to children is so high then...

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:56

Just...WHY would anyone even begin to, in the smallest measure, encourage their children to mistreat animals?

Of course pigeons don't fucking like being chased. The clue is in the flying away.

Would you like something with twice as many limbs and ten times as tall as you to chase you down the street? And then go "oh well there's no evidence they hate it". What the fuck evidence do you want? The pigeon to call 101 and give a written statement? Pigeons to post on MN complaining about humans?

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 15:59

@Greenrubber

I'm letting you know not everyone who let's their kid chase a pigeon or two is for animal cruelty
Of course they are. Not stopping cruelty in its tracks is encouraging it, especially as a parent
SmidgenofaPigeon · 06/07/2021 16:02

@Greenrubber you’ve tied yourself in knots, it’s getting a bit embarrassing.

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 16:07

Dogs like to be chased and chase there's just one example most predatory animals like to chase
Birds have a very good advantage of being able to fly and according to your article have great eyesight which it's probably why a child could never catch a bird and the birds flys off before they even get close

They would be scared if they couldn't fly or get away but they always have an escape route
Its a non issue in a world of proper problems I wish you would all put your energy into something that actually makes a difference in the world

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 16:10

Ohh don't be embarrassed I'm not

I don't find it cruel
I won't stop my DD doing it
I'm sure she will grow out of it like most kids
It's a non issue

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 16:11

@Greenrubber SOME domesticated dogs like to be chased. They're used to humans who show them love and affection the rest of the time.

But birds are not dogs. And they aren't treated that way.

Being able to fly off won't make them less scared. If someone ran at my car with an axe I can out-drive them but I'm still bloody terrified.

Not to mention the pigeon was probably happy where it was and shouldn't tolerate some badly raised bully launching itself at it while mummy sits on by smiling benevolently about how spirited little Henry is.

Just stop letting your kids torment animals. It's really, really shitty parenting

Can I ask, how do you think bullies are made?
FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 06/07/2021 16:12

I also imagine you don't let your child chase random dogs? If not why not?

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 16:14

We just have to agree to disagree

You all think I'm encouraging animal cruelty

I don't because I don't think the kids get close enough to scare them

I think unless your a vegan then your a hypocrite because you know for a fact that is animal cruelty on the biggest scale

And you lot don't

Agree to disagree

Greenrubber · 06/07/2021 16:19

I won't rise to being called a shitty parent name calling is a form of bullying also so maybe you should take a look at yourself

And just leave it!
