Aibu to wonder what other children will be doing for the 6 week summer holidays?

We only have just over 4 weeks this year. Much more manageable, but the children are already starting to show signs of tiredness, and we still have so long to go until they break up.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/07/2021 19:12

7 weeks for us this year for some reason. Like every year we'll be muddling through with a mix of grandparents, holiday clubs and annual leave. Hanging out with friends, a few beach trips and a healthy dose of idle boredom.

Justgettingbye · 03/07/2021 19:13

It's tough my 4 year old was declaring she was bored today. I cannot play with her every second of the day for the housework purposes and my own sanity and can't afford to constantly go out. I swear when I was a kid we had more imagination!

Imapotato · 03/07/2021 19:13

Mostly amusing themselves while I work. Dd1 has a part time job, so she’ll do a couple of days a week there. I’ve got 2 weeks off I’m august so I’ll probably take them on either a London or theme park trip. Not going to have a big holiday this year, but have got a few nights away in Cornwall booked.

Figgygal · 03/07/2021 19:16

Mixture of holiday clubs - multi sports, cricket and football ones
Handful of days with grandparents
One week away in U.K. as family
One week away to see my family on other side of country
Few days home while I wfh

CrowBones · 03/07/2021 19:18

Occasional sports/paid childcare days, 2 week family holiday, a few planned activities from home, a birthday for one of them and a good few days of being left to their own devices. Mostly though I hope having a lovely time not being at school for six whole weeks! Love the summer holidays.

Coasterfan · 03/07/2021 19:19

We will be going to Devon for a week then going to theme parks a few days a week, we have a couple of days in London booked, a couple on the east coast and a few visiting family as well. I m self employed and can work in the evenings which I know is lucky. My two are 11 and 13 so will also organise things with friends and have some time at home doing their own thing as well. DS only gets 5 weeks as we have 2 weeks in October but DD gets 8.

Groovee · 03/07/2021 19:19

I have 7 weeks off this year and no children to share it with as they are all grown up.

When they were younger I planned 4 cheap days out where we took a picnic or had lunch at home. Often would head to one of the many country parks near us for a walk then they play. As we lived in Edinburgh we could go into the High Street and see the free fringe performers.

YoungestSpinster · 03/07/2021 19:19

I'll be working for some of it so DD will be at holiday club, thankfully she loves it. Then I have a week off and we're going away to Wales for 4 days of that. Then another few days of holiday club before back to school.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 03/07/2021 19:19

Not an awful lot in the case of my dcs. We have limited funds. We'll probably do a daytrip or two to the coast and/or a NT/EH place but that's about it. The rest of the time they'll do what they normally do: PS, Switch, YouTube and playing out with the kids nearby.

Hesma · 03/07/2021 19:19

I’ll probably camp in the garden with them for a week, may go and visit grandparents for a few days, on hols for a week, visits to local parks, picnics with friends and go with the flow in the rest

wordsareveryunnecessary · 03/07/2021 19:30

Playstation and whatever opportunities I get to take DS and his friend out.
DS won't go out just with me, which is a shame as I have energy to visit lots of fun places

claralara42 · 03/07/2021 19:32

Long? Lol. My older kids have 10 weeks and my younger 8. I wish we had only 6 weeks!

They play, they chill, they relax.

adagio · 03/07/2021 19:36

7 weeks including inset days. First 2 weeks DH off, last 2 weeks I’m off, 3 in middle I’m mildly panicking and thinking holiday clubs and maybe swap kids with friends (I can have theirs for the last couple of weeks).

While off it will be free days out at park/ drive to coast for beach / picnics / visit grandparents for an hour or so etc. Pray for good weather!

namechange90832 · 03/07/2021 19:38

3 weeks will be spent with other family members, 2 weeks DH is off no set plans yet probably let them play out with a couple activities, 1 week family holiday.

Sparklehead · 03/07/2021 19:52

One week family holiday in Wales, 2 long weekends of group camping trips, a handful of days at holiday clubs, a few days with grandparents and some childcare swaps with friends. Mine are 7, 9 and 12. I approach the summer holidays with an equal mixture of dread and enthusiasm, and always worry that I won’t be able to sort out childcare but this year it’s all slotted into place nicely.

hopeishere · 03/07/2021 19:52

Nine weeks in NI. I eyeroll get hen I see these threads!!

Annual leave / kids clubs / wfh

User5827372728 · 03/07/2021 19:54

3 weeks family holidays in U.K. 1 week summer camp, 1 week forest school.

User5827372728 · 03/07/2021 19:54

@hopeishere

9 weeks?!!! Wtf

EssentialHummus · 03/07/2021 19:58

I’m still quietly hoping we’ll manage to send DD (nearly four) to GPs for a bit, but they’re abroad and I’m not sure that’s realistic. Otherwise… a few structured activities that a term-time thing she does is running, maybe a weekly playdate with friends, the rest of the time playing in the garden and a lot of tv most likely.

Wishiwasonholiday1 · 03/07/2021 19:59

Mine have 9 weeks too, I'm a teacher so I have the time off with them. I tend to rotate membership visits (national trust, Kew etc) and swimming at the gym to keep the costs down. I definitely get my money's worth in the holidays. We've got a few short breaks planned in the UK, paddling pool outside and lots of picnics, if the sun comes out!

adagio · 03/07/2021 20:19

@hopeishere 9 weeks!! Wtf!!
I thought 7 here in Wales was bad! (which includes 4 inset days I think)

Forgot to mention waaaay too much screen time particularly if it rains!

hopeishere · 03/07/2021 20:21

Yes end of June to start of September. Exactly nine weeks. I guess we're used to it now!

Malacath · 03/07/2021 20:38

My 2 DC are 8 and 5; younger one with undiagnosed SEN so can be difficult to handle sometimes and feels much younger than 5 emotionally. I'm a SAHM. We'll be alternating days out to the park/playground, to town for a drink and the library, walks etc, and mooching around at home. We have a trampoline and swing/slide set in the garden, as well as a sand pit and we can put up a paddling pool. Eldest will probably have some time on the Switch/tablet but that's very limited. Youngest one goes a bit loopy after any tv so he's definitely limited to once a week at most. Oh and they will hopefully be able to attend summer school for the better part of a week in August.

I'm dreading 7 weeks of keeping them from trying to hurt each other (intentionally or not) and making sure there's at least some fun planned. I'm getting the major housework jobs and decorating out of the way in the next 2 weeks so I can spend more time with them instead of trying to be productive while they're running around playing, but I know I'll mostly have to leave them to it whilst I try to stay somewhat sane Grin

Marmite27 · 03/07/2021 20:44

Week 1: with me, soft play, cinema, bowling or trampolining. Chilling and picnic with friends. Trip to a child friendly museum.
Week 2: with a relative. They’re meeting friends, camping in the garden and probably lots I wouldn’t approve of so I’m not told until it’s too late Grin. Haircuts due this week.
Week 3 & 4: With dad. No idea what he has planned. No trip away though as they went away at half term and it nearly broke him Grin has mentioned wildlife park or aquarium.

Week 5: camping with me and granny and grandad.

Week 6: with me again, probably a couple of quiet days to recover from camping, shopping for school stuff. Will let them both pick a favourite thing to repeat (not camping!).
