Garden supper this evening. Would it be reasonable to suggest that guests might leave the table for the football?

We have a ten people arriving for supper this evening. We plan to eat on the terrace, with a 7pm start to catch the last of any sunshine. Clearly if they arrive at 7.15, have drinks and warm spiced nuts/olives then sit down to a starter of crab, we’re not going to be serving the entree until well past 8pm.

I don’t know two of the couples. My guess would be that three, maybe four, of the men would want to see the match. I don’t think most of the women would be particularly interested.

My problem is I wasn’t aware there was a football match this evening and I rather suspect some guests will want to see it.

Do we;

  • open the doors so people can pop in and out?
  • suggest those that wish cut their food at table and then eat of their knees with a fork whilst watching the television?
  • suggest we watch together later?
  • not mention to football and hope nobody else does?
  • arrange regular update messages from someone who is watching?

If a match is at 8pm, what time will it finish? Should we defer eating until after the match but add in more substantial canapés?

@Threewheeler1

I'm out of my depth. Just make sure you take your undercrackers off the washing line before the guests arrive. That's all I've got.
Is this a typo or is undercrackers a real word? I’m adopting it going forward.
hannayeah · 03/07/2021 17:37

@VerticalHorizon. 😂

Wauden · 03/07/2021 17:37

I do hope that you all enjoy the warm nuts.

RJnomore1 · 03/07/2021 17:39

You know, in Scotland the meal known as a supper is any deep fried item served with a side of chips 😁

LemonRoses · 03/07/2021 17:42

Nearly all done.

PinkTonic. Very poor stalking. 4/10. It’s a tiny little Victorian terrace we were given years ago.

No staff tonight. It’s only for a dozen people. I’d be a bit sad if I couldn’t manage to cook a fairly simple meal for twelve. Forecast is saying no rain, but we’ll put the awning out anyway as the sky doesn't look quite as convincing as the forecast.

minniebin it’s strangely delicious, isn’t it? Hard to believe the colour is natural.

Now wondering whether I should wear something supportive of this ‘national event’ (Football not supper) How can being in a quarter final of a competition that isn’t even the World Cup be such a big deal? I suppose there hasn’t been much for a while so even Bognor Old Boys versus Lyndhurst United might feel newsworthy.

Do we need the equivalent of Vevuzela or those wooden ratchet things you spin around to make a noise? We don’t have any but I’m sure we could improvise.

I’m female and tonight’s game is a big deal. If anyone turns up here tonight, wanting feeding, it would be fish fingers and instant whip, England don’t get this far very often.

LemonRoses · 03/07/2021 17:43

For the record, Entree is local dialect. It’s said nasally, with an estuary accent.

Op you've been a great sport! I think you should definitely wear a football shirt!

Very much enjoying your advice VerticalHorizon. Your dialogue post was very funny, and probably not without some degree of accuracy.

I've created a simple guide to Entrees!

'Any good host would have checked if there were any clashing national events and catered her evening accordingly'

@TanquerayTickles - 'national event'? It's (yet another) damn football match, as if there isn't enough of it on TV already. Not everybody cares about it, you know!

Shelby10 · 03/07/2021 17:48

My DH and DS wouldn’t go anywhere tonight apart from home or the pub lol.. football is a big part of their lives. Based on this I’d definitely go with the option that allows those who want to, to watch it

minniebin · 03/07/2021 17:50

Fair play, I struggle with cooking family meals.

minniebin · 03/07/2021 17:52

And fair play for you for being a good sport!

merrymouse · 03/07/2021 17:54

Can’t be that small - I used to live in a tiny little Victorian terrace and you couldn’t fit 12 people downstairs.

However, the Lyndhurst detail does imply familiarity with IoW if you regularly travel via Lymington…

Not stalking, just fantasising about a ‘garden supper’ on a terrace over looking Newtown Creek.

VeganFishFingers · 03/07/2021 17:56

Lol

Bellasblankexpression · 03/07/2021 17:56

OP, I've got an idea after seeing your menu - un-invite anyone who you think might want to watch the football and I'll nip over and enjoy your efforts instead. I promise to bring naice wine.

bargelights · 03/07/2021 17:56

😂 😂 I'm dying here.

MaBroon21 · 03/07/2021 17:57

Just sounded like an expat entertaining other expats

Nah. It sounds just like Crumbs.

RamItBunty · 03/07/2021 18:01

Nonplussed about the footy, your foot sounds delicious

olidora63 · 03/07/2021 18:04

I would definitely give the guests the opportunity to watch the football..even if just on in the background! Enjoy your evening and I hope the footy fans have a reason to celebrate later . 💐

MaBroon21 · 03/07/2021 18:09

Yes, I have firmly believed this is a parody/joke account (although terribly unfunny when she's not chatting shit about being posh) ever since the bedroom photograph incident and the OP brazening it out instead of slinking off in shame at being caught out

No matter how often the account holder changes their it’s always immediately obvious it’s them again.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 03/07/2021 18:09

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead

I always thought it was the American way to call it the main. French it’s still the starter.

Nope that's hors d'oeuvres.

@DaphneDeloresMoorhead

Still wrong. Hor d’oeurves are nibbles. Party food to go with drinks. Not a starter meal.

Entree clearly translates as entrance.Which is why it’s used for a starter except when it’s being used by Americans.

Sorry for all people that have already pointed this out. It’s for those that start a thread from the wrong end.

Americans, Canadians, and many people on this thread (including the OP).
