Italy has the best national anthem

Good call but Wales definitely trumps them all! And is best sung by a Welsh male voice choir or the crowd (not by the likes of Katherine Jenkins etc.)

Italy’s national anthem is pure unadulterated Gilbert and Sullivan’s - I love it.

I am a totally nerdy fan of anthems - I look forward to the Six Nations Rugby, and the Rugby World Cup, because I look up the words of the anthems and sing along. My favourite is either Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau - the Welsh National anthem, or N’Kosi Sikelele Afrika - the South African National anthem - I saw that sung at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, and it made me cry.

I read music at university (as part of a joint honours), and if I were doing it now, I would do my dissertation on national anthems - how they are written, how they change, how new ones come into being.

Love it. I only watch Grand Prix as it's played so often. Closely followed by La Marseillaise and The Star Spangled Banner. I want to be Italian, French or American!

the scottish one is lovely but sounds awful by an out of tune sports team in a stadium. sorry.

I really like the Russian one and the Portuguese one. Actually I quite like the German one too but the British one is a bit dire.

The Scottish one is of course one of the best and even better when accompanied by the pipes and drums.

Have to agree with you OP, very rousing.

I noticed for the Belgian national anthem that only the Flemish/Dutch speaking Belgian players sung the anthem. The anthem talks about unity, yet it is in three languages.

Wales is clearly and objectively the best one.

But the Italian anthem makes me think of Michael Schumacher conducting the crowd with his cap with a huge grin on his face when Ferrari won yet again, which makes me happy.

Michael Schumacher got told off for that. The Italian one is long and sounds like it's from Grand Fenwick

Do you think after the Queen dies we should change our anthem, and what could we use instead? Most of the popular tunes like I vow to thee, Rule Britannia, or Jerusalem would be out for start.
