She was a style icon yet she’s in one of those frumpy waist belts that were only in fashion briefly. The face does nothing to represent how beautiful she was. It’s too harsh.

To be fair, the term 'girls' is still applied to women's teams when the coach says 'the girls did well'. Same with men and 'boys' in teams.

We also often say 'Girl's night out' for women.

@LubaLuca

Don't think too hard about it. Why on earth would you be disappointed? This was never going to affect you.

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 02/07/2021 21:07

Harry has flown back to the US apparently

RamItBunty · 02/07/2021 21:09

@Mum2b43

I should have been her with her boys. They were her world
Truly Baaaarf worthy comment. Utterly dripping in saccharine and I’d do anyfink for my kids. #MyKidsMyWorld and all that
emetophobe123 · 02/07/2021 21:11

It has a very manly nose and looks nothing like her!

PurpleRainDancer · 02/07/2021 21:11

@LuluJakey1

Does it matter whether it looks like her or not? She has been dead for almost 25 years and will be forgotten about sooner or later. It is tucked away in a garden. A few tourists may visit it but it is hardly a national monument. I am not sure if the public even wanted a statue in the first place.
You’re being ridiculous on every point Hmm
VerticalHorizon · 02/07/2021 21:13

Her elbow is a good likeness. Fair play.

Mummyoflittledragon · 02/07/2021 21:20

@BirdsandBeesmakinghay

Harry has flown back to the US apparently
To comfort her sad loss of the diplomat uncle with Parkinson’s, who got her a job as a junior press officer in the American Embassy in Argentina, whom she subsequently disowned.

That uncle. Hmm

beigebrownblue · 02/07/2021 21:50

Its made of stone isn't it?

I like it too. Difficult to represent such a person in stone, but it exudes character I feel.

beigebrownblue · 02/07/2021 21:55

Just realised, it is not stone it is bronze

very difficult artistic medium to work with I imagine.

I like it.

The money would have been better spent on a scholarship fund to train overseas and UK medical students as paediatricians provided they undertake to work for at least 10 years with a recognised organisation like Medicins sans Frontieres etc. A living memorial to provide assistance to the children Diana was concerned about.
Her sons have demonstrated they are able to raise funds for good causes. Churches and parks are full of statues to people the public, with the exception of very few, can no longer remember.
Just because William and Harry are able to commission a statue does not mean it’s inherently right to do so. Will a statue ease their pain at all or more than putting together a private collection of photos and other memorabilia?

@BirdsandBeesmakinghay

Harry has flown back to the US apparently
Has he? oh well, maybe he was only here for a quick visit for the unveiling of the statue. He does have a wife at home with young children, who he may not want to leave for longer than he has too.

It is equally ridiculous. If you're still a boy at 39 when do you become an adult? Maybe they will qualify when they lose the last of their hair.

@emetophobe123

Well she didn't have a dainty little nose did she. She had strong features, she would probably have aged well as I think women with strong features often do.
itsnotmeitsu · 02/07/2021 22:52

Oh what a shame. I had high hopes for something more gloriously terrible, along the lines of ‘Diana and Dodi with an albatross in Harrods’.

itsnotmeitsu · 02/07/2021 22:54

Sorry, copied the post but it's not mine. I just thought it was appropriate Smile

VerticalHorizon · 02/07/2021 22:58

Oh what a shame. I had high hopes

Well, they could always put it on a taller plinth in the future.

FannyCann · 02/07/2021 23:40

The Times review.

This Laura Ashley monument is little better than the usual Diana tat.

A rear view. Not a flattering one!

The statue “feels calculated to appeal to the lowest common denominator”

Ouch! from the Times reviewer.

It looks worse from this angle with the little Duke of Windsor lookalike stretching out his hand. Why is he doing that?

It makes her look very broad in the beam from behind!

VerticalHorizon · 03/07/2021 00:15

@MrsFin

It makes her look very broad in the beam from behind!
Although it's rather firm.
OutwiththeOutCrowd · 03/07/2021 00:24

It was reported in the media some time back that the relationship between William and Harry was unravelling as the statue was being designed and put together. They could not agree on the design, it was said, and progress stalled. It seems to have been an ill-starred project from the outset. The sculptor, who is very talented, wasn’t getting to work on his preferred subject matter - he is more inspired by the male form according to his website - and William and Harry couldn’t agree on what they wanted.

Looking at the finished sculpture, the composition does seem … off. It looks rather fragmentary to me, as if the elements within it have been put together in a piecemeal fashion rather than being parts a harmonious pre-planned whole.

The puzzling and somewhat jarring composition might actually be testament to what was going on between the brothers.

SirVixofVixHall · 03/07/2021 01:18

Have woken up DH laughing too loudly at “the little Duke of Windsor stretching out his hand”
As to why he is doing that, he is pleading for someone to take him away from this mawkish spectacle and put him in his proper place outside a shop in 1965, wearing callipers and with a slot in his head for big, round pennies.

Backstreetsbackalrightdadada · 03/07/2021 01:24

It isn’t like any woman’s body I know… the belt sits particularly strangely at the back. Maybe it is a monument to bad communication… it’s rather staid, looks too harsh for theme of “perfect lady angel with waifs”, maybe the lads should’ve been pickier with their choice of artist if he isn’t known for doing a range of people. Waste of cash and I bet the artist is miffed at taking the commission!
