Please could anyone recommend a non alcoholic dry white wine that doesn't taste like apple juice.

It's all disgusting. Alcohol free has got really good, but wine is still trailing behind.

RampantIvy · 01/07/2021 08:05

We tried McGuigan AF wine recently. Most of it went down the sink. To be fair DH is a wine enthusiast and is really knowledgeable about wine. He is as prepared to try all AF options, but we both agree that it is better to drink something else. AF beer and cider taste much more like their alcoholic counterparts.

PlumpCushion · 01/07/2021 08:07

I had a lovely Gordon’s alcohol free G&T in a can. Not wine obviously 🤷‍♀️.

^ This is gorgeous if you like Campari style bitterness

PlumpCushion · 01/07/2021 08:07

^^Drunk On it’s own

Sorry never found a good AF white wine. Would suggest unsweetened grapefruit juice and soda instead.

If you like gin then neat Fevertree light tonic is great AF substitute.

I like rose wine and find sugar free cherryade with loads of ice hits the spot!

HidingFromDD · 01/07/2021 08:09

They're all grim IMO. Switched to AF lager after realising I'd had at least 1, usually 2 glasses of wine every night for over 6 months (lockdown boredom mainly). If it helps, I 'missed' the wine for about 3 evenings but not bothered after that. Most of the AF wines are v sweet and the ones that aren't seem to have a chemical flavour, much like AF lager used to about 15 years ago. Homemade basil lemondade mixed with tonic water seems to hit the spot now

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/07/2021 08:14

Do you have a recipe for basil lemonade, @HidingFromDD? Sounds good.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 01/07/2021 08:19

Oh dear not good reading but thank you all for your answers. I do like Seedlip gin and I saw the Gordon's one yesterday but I just love a glass of dry white wine. I'm going to look at the vinegar based one now.

non alcoholic drinks

Not sure whether you have seen this thread. Lots of good suggestions.

Elderflower drink was my first thought. It’s not a non-alcoholic wine, but I think has a similar taste.

HidingFromDD · 01/07/2021 08:22

I put 750ml (ish) water, 2 lemons, roughly peeled and chopped, large handful fresh basil, around 10 ice cubes and a good spoon of honey in the blender for one minute. You my need to tweak ingredients a bit depending on your taste and your blender (some can cope with halved lemons and some my need them chopped smaller). It's really refreshing with just the right amount of sharpness. I've also seen recipes which substitute the honey for dates although not tried that

I agree with elderflower. Elderflower with tonic and lots of ice is lovely.
Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/07/2021 08:31

Thanks, Hiding, that sounds good. Would work with mint instead of basil, I expect.

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 08:32

I agree about tonic water -love it! Sometimes mix tonic water with regular dry white wine to dilute it.

CandyLeBonBon · 01/07/2021 08:43

I second tonic water in alcohol free prosecco. It dials down the sweetness and gives it thst 'dry' taste

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 01/07/2021 08:50

Thank you for directing me to the other thread, I have to admit I only really go on here and it was wine I'm looking for.

I'm liking the idea of making a spritzer with tonic water.

@TeddingtonTrashbag, why has this, in my ongoing struggle with drinking too much wine, never occurred to me ! I've tried it with lemonade or soda didn't like.
Am definitely going to try it with tonic. Cheers !

fellrunner85 · 01/07/2021 09:39

Some fizz is ok (M&S Fizzero, Nosecco and Belle &Co all drinkable imo) but all alcohol free non-sparkling wine is awful.
Alcohol free beer has got much, much better over the years I've been teetotal though, so usually I'll just go for that.
With wines, nothing replicates that crisp, dry, taste. They're all too sweet or else just taste like Schloer.

Cowbells · 01/07/2021 09:39

@TeddingtonTrashbag

It’s do annoying- when I first got a car and so couldn’t drink I used to take Aqua Libra with me to parties -tasted alcoholic but wasn’t, and, crucially, not sweet. Discontinued now and can’t find a non-sweet soft drink with that ‘kick’…
I know. That was such a delicious drink. Can't believe it's no longer made when there is a current trend for low and no alcoholic drinks. When will manufacturers realise we don't want tooth-rotting sweetness.

But I don't want so many botanicals that it tastes like the dregs of an out of date medicine cupboard all whisked up with a bit of soda water (most fake gins). Just something subtle and savoury and grown up.

Noodles4Me · 01/07/2021 09:48

Torres Natureo are the best and most wine like, Waitrose do them. If you want something wine-like then grapefruit and elderflower are just too flowery

Agree though, alco-free wine needs to improve like the lagers. I bet there is a massi2ve market for them as yet un-tapped

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 10:23

Agree about the lagers -I can’t tell the difference especially with s dash of lime.
Am going to check out the Torres!

TeddingtonTrashbag · 01/07/2021 10:24

It surely can’t be on the bounds of chemistry to something with the wines…. Vast untapped market!

motogogo · 01/07/2021 12:14

Have had very good dry apple juice, far better than af wine. We buy at the farmers market

CounsellorTroi · 01/07/2021 12:25

Heineken AF is excellent, and I'm not usually fussed on lagers, prefer wheat beers.

CounsellorTroi · 01/07/2021 12:27

And we've never had much luck with AF wine. If they actually taste good they are often high in sugar.
