Year 6 leavers event

sneakypetestolemywife · 30/06/2021 20:42

If you have kids in year 6 who are leaving to go to senior school or are a teacher or TA for year 6 can you please fill me in with what the school is doing to make this term special.
My son's school have cancled the PGL, disco and day out and are doing nothing and I want to raise this with the head because I'm sure it's not the norm.
AIBU to expect something fun for them and not just exams for their last few weeks before hitting big school?

just get a group of the kids together in the park and maybe get them all an ice cream. Job done.

Attheendofthedaywhenallsaid · 30/06/2021 21:11

Everything is too commercialised nowadays, all about the money - money for leaver hoodies?? etc etc - whatever happened to just getting out in the park for a play

TheMoth · 30/06/2021 21:13

Leavers' party organised by parents. That's it. However, the way bubbles keep bursting, I'm not sure it's going to happen.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 30/06/2021 21:14

They went to PGL last week (postponed from March last year) but that's it, everything else is cancelled (assembly, leavers performance etc).

Keeping everything crossed for the rule change on 19/7 as the leavers party (organised by us, the parents, this is always the case) is scheduled to go ahead 20/7.

I suppose the same as landlines and videos. Things change and move on.
TheCheeseAlarm · 30/06/2021 21:15

We have an end of year trip - a cookery experience
The Leavers' Festival - sort of mini party/disco/barbecue/bouncy castle/summer fair stall thing in the playground
A video Leavers' Assembly
Leavers' hoodies

  • other stuff in school

Residential happened last month.

The transition days to secondary have been cancelled so they are doing a walk there and around the grounds/outside the buildings so they can familiarise themselves with the route etc (it’s a 2 mile walk down busy roads for most of them).

Next week they are having an outdoor adventure day at a local attraction (think Forest School on acid!)

Sports day was last week without parents.

Hoodies were purchased and have been worn as uniform since the end of lockdown 2.

Last day: Leavers assembly in the hall no parents but being videoed and streamed to parents outside followed by Prize giving outside, socially distanced with families sat in groups (remember the squares drawn on playgrounds? Like that)

Final pizza party/picnic on the school field at the end of the last day.

There is no excuse not to do something

Last year we just did the last day stuff and it worked well.

Flowerlane · 30/06/2021 21:16

@Paddingtonitspaddingtonbear I really didn’t mean it to come across like that (glad you knew that I didn’t) 🙈 eating a McDonald’s and typed quickly with one hand Grin

I honestly do feel sorry for the children that are going to not be having anything. They have all been through so much in the last year it would be nice if they had end of year plans going ahead.

Fourmagpies · 30/06/2021 21:17

PGL went ahead. Performance is being recorded for parents to view at home. They're having a disco outside, subject to weather. Leavers assembly will go ahead outdoors if restrictions are lifted and weather okay. If not , it'll be live streamed.

Schools in Scotland are shut now but this has been a highly controversial issue. My daughter has just finished P7. They usually have a residential in June, a school organised fun activity, a parent organised activity and leavers assembly with piper. None of them were able to go ahead. She had a parents planned activity which was outdoor based and a lot of fun. School organised outdoor activities and pulled off a really special week. On the last day they were piped round the school. Not the usual finale but a good one.

People have been expecting it all to be as usual. Much like the no parents at sports, the leavers activities have caused a lot of conflict between school and families.

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 30/06/2021 21:25

Y6 TA here. The residential has been cancelled, as has the play. We had sports day last week in the playground with no parents, each year group on a different day (normally we hire a local athletics stadium). We are just starting to get the leavers service together, which will be livestreamed/available to watch back on Google Classroom. Normally we do one performance to the school, and one to parents. We also have leavers hoodies (not arrived yet), a theme park trip and a beach day coming up, and we're having PE at a local park with coaches from the local football team every Friday this half term (except the last two have been cancelled because it chucked it down).

Definitelytheothersideof40 · 30/06/2021 21:57

Year 6 parent, they managed to get their PGL trip, but everything else is cancelled. Sports day has been cancelled for the whole school, not even a parent free zone, which I would understand, no leavers assembly, no transition days to secondary until September.

SaltyAF · 30/06/2021 22:03

Ours are having a sleepover in the school hall. The whole school is having a circus skills event, an ice cream van and an exotic animal display in lieu of trips. It's a reasonable offer. Because we're in Wales they also get a transition day.

We're all going to the beach for a bit more year 6 only fun and will do other things over the hols, but that's organised by parents.

Nogoodusername · 30/06/2021 22:05

Residential went ahead
But otherwise - sports day no parents, year 6 production is being filmed, party is cancelled (was off school site and therefore now not within rules as more than 30), don’t think they do an assembly anyway

sneakypetestolemywife · 30/06/2021 22:08

Wow there is a real mix!

Btw it doesn't sound like bragging those people who have amazing lineups it sounds like very good well run schools. Unfortunately this school has had 4 head teachers in the 7 years we have been there and it feels like noone cares. My partner believes that the can't be bothered to do anything because they can't cope with the risk assessment. I unfortunately think this is actually the reason which is very sad indeed.

OP posts:
Rocketpants50 · 30/06/2021 22:10

Nothing...
Parents asked their risk assessment states they cant do it was their response. Sch is still on reduced hour timetable so they are losing half an hour a day. Oh they get a leaves hoodie. It's so sad, parents are organising their own things but it means lots of children are being left out. It's all too sad.

Am just hoping they have organised a surprise for them!

HarrietHairbrush · 30/06/2021 22:15

Our y6 went on their residential

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 30/06/2021 22:17

Absolutely fuck all

DaphneDeloresMoorhead · 30/06/2021 22:19

And we are private as well so it's not as if they are short of funds, manpower or resources. Everything has been cancelled because the governors don't want to take the tiniest risk. They don't even have their orientation day at the senior school site.

This feels like a goady thread and deeply unpleasant.

Schools are always different. Some are always better than others.
But most will do the best they can at the end of a horrific year. Taking on board gvt guidance and whatever is happening locally.
Of course it's shit. This pandemic is

APurpleSquirrel · 30/06/2021 22:27

Week-long Residential
Sports Day (no parents)
Ice lollies after sports day provided by PTA
Non-uniform day
Leavers Assembly on the field with parents
Leavers hoodies

That sounds as close to perfect as it's possible to be in Covid times.

I'm genuinely interested because I want to speak to the school to ask for something to be done even if its by the parents. What I'm hearing is very much like the local schools they are mostly still doing PGL or at least a night or 2 away with some other activities planned. We are seeing our children going to clubs and speaking to friends at other schools and seeing that they are not getting the same experience.

As much as I'd like DD to have bells and whistles leaving year 6, who do we think would be blamed if positive cases meant families self isolating at the start of the summer hols?

Cognitive dissonance what with 60,000 due at Wembley, but not down to schools.

Claysta · 30/06/2021 22:43

4 night residential next week, leavers assembly planned (usual hoodies already given out and being worn proudly), class picnic with parents, sports day in a few weeks.
