To think Penny Lancaster shouldn't have broadcast details of the man she saved?

here Since she did that police programme a couple of years ago she has trained to be a Special Constable.
If I was the guy who had been suicidal I would be making an official complaint.
Surely all the information she gave out should have remained private?

I don't see any identifying details?

Bluntness100 · 30/06/2021 16:05

I can’t see anything identifying here op? What you on about?

lughnasadh · 30/06/2021 16:07

There's nothing remotely identifying in that very badly written article.

Officers probably do that hundreds of times a year.

IronTeeth · 30/06/2021 16:07

“He spoke about his relationship with his parents, his father was very religious… and his mother would call, asking where he was because she was worried. “

Penny continued, “He was in his sophomore year of college, struggling with all the Zoom calls, and not in touch with people.

Yeah, I can work out who he is with that information, student, [x] second year [x] worried mother [x], religious father [x] - must be Dave from down the road....you know Student Dave /s

Penny also said her rocker husband Rob is very supportive of her new career in the emergency services. who?

Elderflower14 · 30/06/2021 16:10

It was that article or the DM.

Not Rob; ROD Grin She’s married to Rod Stewart.
Sirzy · 30/06/2021 16:11

Nothing there identifying. It also helps acknowledge the issues that the pandemic has had mental health wise.

WeatherSystems · 30/06/2021 16:18

YANBU. Really distasteful. Doesn’t matter that she hasn’t outright identified him, she’s using their shared experience as a talking point/story when I think that’s really inappropriate unless he’s given express permission.

One of the darkest moments of his life, that he might not want being talked about online and on TV.

I’m afraid to say things like this make me wonder about her intentions. Is it the need for glory?

Uniontea · 30/06/2021 16:22

There’s nothing identifying in that and she’s done nothing wrong but it is more detail than she needed to give. ‘A young student’ would’ve been more anonymous. Her personal situation means that anything she says about her work is going to get more publicity and reach a much wider audience than your average Special Constable. The flip side of that is that by talking about her work and the real situations she’s faced she can use her position to raise the profile of Special Constables and hopefully get more women interested in applying.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/06/2021 16:24

I think she's a bit too high profile to be sharing stuff like that.
She might not have identified him, but I still think it's inappropriate.

FAQs · 30/06/2021 16:25

What I got from the article..

Thank goodness she was there, her training kicked in and she was able to get the man the relevant support, she cared enough to check up on him later, students are suffering from depression and often forgotten, the Police are approachable for an issue not often highlighted.

Uniontea · 30/06/2021 16:25

I do think having more women and particularly more older women involved in that work is a good thing. You’re going to get different perspectives, life experience and attitudes from them than you do from 20 something men.

DynamoKev · 30/06/2021 16:26

sophomore year
So he was in the USA?

Aprilx · 30/06/2021 16:31

*I’m afraid to say things like this make me wonder about her intentions. Is it the need for glory?”

That would be quite some lengths to go to for a spot of glory! She isn’t paying lip service to this, she hasn’t just made a couple of tweets, she has actually gone out there and qualified. At this point I cannot see any reason to be skeptical about her motives.

Grimacingfrog · 30/06/2021 16:32

I think you're looking to be offended. There isn't enough information out there about how to help people who are struggling. No one could identify the person from those details.

SorrySoldOut · 30/06/2021 16:37

Definitely looking to be offended. Ridiculous

Bluntness100 · 30/06/2021 16:39

She’s not identified him, there is no way to identify him, and we need to stop shying away from talking about mental illness like it’s something shameful.

AlternativePerspective · 30/06/2021 16:40

So he’s in the US and you think he’s identifiable over here? Get a grip.

IronTeeth · 30/06/2021 16:44

I dont think she is working in the US?
I know they say sophomore, but i dont think she is

The model, 50, who has worked with the City of London Police as a special agent since obtaining her badge in April, explained how she calmly spoke to the man when he approached her on patrol and befriended him as a mother.

Redcrayons · 30/06/2021 16:47

Maybe they want her out there publicising the work they do?

Good on her for actually getting out there and doing the job.

Ch3rish · 30/06/2021 16:53

@DynamoKev

sophomore year So he was in the USA?
Or maybe he's an American in London, she may be repeating what said to her. Obviously she's not a special constable in the US
kindaclassy · 30/06/2021 16:53

A male student in London.. good grief, she might as well given his social security number and bank details. Hmm

DynamoKev · 30/06/2021 16:57

social security number
So he was an American?

DismantledKing · 30/06/2021 17:01

YANBU. As someone with MH problems and who has had suicidal ideation and experiences in the past, I hate it when members of the emergency services use social media to discuss people who they have encountered at work like this.
Behind a supposedly heartwarming anecdote is a real suffering person.

DismantledKing · 30/06/2021 17:03

And as for ‘raising awareness’, there’s plenty of bloody awareness. What there isn’t is timely and appropriate treatment.
