Help...toddler swallowed tablet

mn2022 · 30/06/2021 09:41

Posting on here for traffic.

DS 2.5 swallowed one of my B-100 Complex vitamin tablets.

On hold to 111 now but the wait is over an hour.

Is he likely to be ok?

Is it quicker to get through to GP? Or go to pharmacy? Sorry no better advice. Flowers

Branleuse · 30/06/2021 09:44

Id say theyll be fine but might be high energy as high dose B vitamins can make me jittery.

0None0 · 30/06/2021 09:44

At CNN learn it wasn’t vit A or D. They are the dangerous ones. I don’t know about vit Bs. Hopefully someone can put your mind at rest while you wait for 111

Branleuse · 30/06/2021 09:44

Are you sure they actually swallowed it. Arent they very large?

Anoisagusaris · 30/06/2021 09:45

Vitamin B is a water soluble vitamin so the body pees it out rather than storing it so he should be ok.

DartmoorDoughnut · 30/06/2021 09:45

I think it’s Vit A that’s the worry so hopefully they’ll just work out the dosage compared to his weight and fingers crossed they’ll say to keep an eye on him

mn2022 · 30/06/2021 09:47

Yes they're massive and taste disgusting, but I've asked him in multiple different ways and he keeps saying he put it in his mouth so I'm guessing he has, although I'm shocked as I struggle to swallow them myself!

Feel absolutely terrible

He'll be absolutely fine, don't worry! As a PP said, it's a water soluble vitamin, it'll just be peed out.

Being water Soluable doesn’t make anything safe to overdose on Hmm strychnine salts are water soluable. This just shows the dangers of asking random ignorants on the internet
AlmostSummer21 · 30/06/2021 09:50

I'd be very surprised if he actually sealed it. Hopefully you'll find it spat out somewhere

I would phone the local chemist rather than wait an hour for 111

Hope he's ok x

AlmostSummer21 · 30/06/2021 09:51

Sealed?? Swallowed!

Rang GP. They have told me they're far too busy to help and to wait for 111

Ring a local pharmacist whilst you’re on hold to 111 if you have more than one line. I’m sure it will be okay, b vitamins are fairly harmless as a one off large dose and I’m sure it will just get peed out.

Soontobe60 · 30/06/2021 10:05

According to this website, most of the B vitamins are not dangerous when you overdose. Two of the B vitamins can cause some side effects, B3 and B6 but that would depend on the amount that is in the tablets you’ve got.

@mn2022 That is a horrible response from the GP surgery!

Jossbow · 30/06/2021 10:09

Ring a pharmacy, the pharmacist will be able to advise

herewegoohherewego · 30/06/2021 10:10

Agree with call a pharmacist, terrible response from your GP!

PattyPan · 30/06/2021 10:17

Yes he’ll be fine. His pee might be bright yellow for a bit.

Lots of B6. 7000%

If it was something similar to Holland & Barratt's 'Mega b-100' tablets these contain a high dose of Vitamin B6.

A quick Google of 'Vitamin B overdose' brings up Vitamin B toxicity relating to B6. This would be enough for me to decide that the DC needs checking over properly.

It just seems it would be better to be safe than sorry when a child has taken what would be a high dose for an adult of something, even if it's 'only' a vitamin.

INeedNewShoes · 30/06/2021 10:26

Cross-post. If you haven't managed to get through to 111 yet, I honestly would just take him to the nearest paediatric A&E OP. I'm pretty sure this is what 111 will say anyway as they seem to err very much on the side of caution.

Branleuse · 30/06/2021 10:28

Yes it really is a high dose vitamin but all they will do is keen an eye. They arent going to pump the stomach for one vitamin tablet.

HadEnoughOfBears · 30/06/2021 10:34

It's very likely that 111 will tell you to go to a&e so you'd be as well heading there now.

CustardySergeant · 30/06/2021 10:37

If you go to A&E take the bottle of tablets with you.
