Help...toddler swallowed tablet

Posting on here for traffic.

DS 2.5 swallowed one of my B-100 Complex vitamin tablets.

On hold to 111 now but the wait is over an hour.

Is he likely to be ok?

Agree with pp’s, 111 will advise A&E so would be best heading there anyway. Hope he’s ok OP.

DeathStare · 30/06/2021 10:40

I'd just take him to A&E to be honest. This isn't the kind of thing to take risks about.

Polkadots2021 · 30/06/2021 10:42

Only positive I can give is that those tablets are massive and taste vile as well so it's unlikely he swallowed it especially without water. I hope you get it sorted OP and that there's nothing to worry about!

TableFlowerss · 30/06/2021 10:44

Im hoping I’m right. I’m not medical expert but even if they are high doeses surely eating one would be ok? Had he eaten the full far of them then that would be different?

You never hear if anyone overdosing on vitamins….

So fingers crossed the little love will be just fine and hopefully someone can reassure you soon.

The doctors response was shocking!

TableFlowerss · 30/06/2021 10:45

jar

Radio4ordie · 30/06/2021 10:45

Personally I’d just give them water, dilute squash and ice lollies, and keep an eye on them. There’s a good chance you’ll find it spat out somewhere weird in a week or two (speaking from experience and regretted my hair trigger A & E response!)

mn2022 · 30/06/2021 11:26

So whilst still on hold to 111 I went to the local pharmacist who advised as it was only 1 tablet, that is unlikely to do any harm, not to worry, and just to keep an eye on him

The more I think about it, the more shocked I am that he's even managed to eat it because A) they're massive and B) they taste foul so I thought he would've spat it out

He may well have spat it out. You might find it one day in some obscure place. Fingers crossed.

mam0918 · 30/06/2021 11:58

It shouldnt be deadly but might cause issue like gastro distress which isnt pleasent.

Iron is the really big risk in vitamins as an overdose distroys the liver.

Mummyratbag · 30/06/2021 12:02

Your local hospital should have a toxicology dept. I was put through to them when I phoned 111 with a query about DS eating something in the garden! They were really helpful.

Mummyratbag · 30/06/2021 12:03

Ignore - I saw you spoke to pharmacist!

Ohshittt · 30/06/2021 12:05

Funny that they will refuse lovely cooked vegetables but happily swallow huge tablets 🙈 odd beasts are toddlers, I hope all is ok 😊

SeaToSki · 30/06/2021 12:12

I would push lots and lots fluids today and tomorrow to help the kidneys process and minimise side effect. Any fluids are ok, just lots and lots.

the other alternative is to try and make him vomit, but you might get bitten and traumatise him in the process.

Making them vomit is not the correct response for many other things swallowed by accident, but it is an option for vit B pills

INeedNewShoes · 30/06/2021 12:14

Don't they smell quite strong, vitamin B tablets?

I reckon you'd be able to smell it on his breath if he'd really had it...

I can guarantee you’ll find it next week in one of their toys 🤣🤣

Toddlers can often swallow massive chucks of food once they’re confident with their gag reflex. DS swallowed a whole (small) strawberry once. I was petrified but except for a few seedy fragments in his poo he was fine.
Bumzoo · 30/06/2021 12:32

I bet you find it chewed up and spat out later. He'll be okay.

pigsDOfly · 30/06/2021 12:56

Bloody disgusting response from your GP, especially with a child.

I accidentally took two of my blood pressure pills once (had a lot on my mind at the time) rang my GP and they got back to me within about half an hour telling me it won't do me any harm.

Like pps I imagine he probably spat it out especially if he bit into it first must have tasted foul.

mn2022 · 30/06/2021 13:12

Yes, I am very frustrated with the GP. Found their response disgusting, especially considering I wasn't asking for a face to face appointment, simply a check with the doctor as to whether I needed to seek for emergency help

They taste absolutely vile, I often gag when taking them, so I'm shocked.

I've looked at his tongue and his teeth and can't see any yellow fragments, so maybe he didn't. But I keep asking him whether he 'just looked, just licked or ate it' and he keeps saying ate and he is typically and 'honest' child (as honest as a toddler gets!)

A stressful morning to say the least.

You really do need to be one step ahead of them with toddlers
