Do you get more intolerant as you get older?

I feel as though i am getting more unreasonable and cantankerous. sigh.

Help me be more patient/tolerant/socially acceptable.

pointydog · 22/11/2007 21:31

I get more intolerant as I realise how many arseholes there are in th world

notnowbernard · 22/11/2007 21:34

I think this is very common.

I am definitely more intolerant than when I was younger... also am more cynical, have a lower threshold for bullshit, am more easily irritated, more likely to tell someone what I think...

New Year Resolution: Have More Patience and Understanding!

Mercy · 22/11/2007 21:35

I am getting more cynical yet more understanding as I get older. If that makes sense, which it probably doesn't.

southeastastra · 22/11/2007 21:35

i like a good moan nowadays

snowleopard · 22/11/2007 21:36

Exactly pd. You have met more people. You realise just how many of them are cruel, selfish or plain boring. You've got more on your plate as well, and you can't be arsed.

However, it does also amaze me how very nice and caring some people can be, so think about that. Or (I do this when when I have raging pmt and am trying not to be a total bitch) remember that most people don't want to irritate you, they're just not thinking, and you may irritate other people sometimes in the same way.

Rarely works as well as a shedload of red wine though.

Desiderata · 22/11/2007 21:37

I think it's the opposite.

There are loads of MNers, for instance, who seem to bristle daily with angst and indignation .. and most of them are a hell of a lot younger than me.

People are getting more uptight by the minute (and all under the guise, of course, of being tolerant).

Mercy · 22/11/2007 21:38

Oooh, I love a good moan too.

You name it, I've got an opinion.

yama · 22/11/2007 21:39

Rosybud - do you say things like:

'This country has gone to the dogs'

'I've had it up to here' (hand gesture to forehead)

'It makes my blood boil' ?

Mercy · 22/11/2007 21:41

Fair point Desi. I'm always amazed at the number of threads where posters are 'furious' or 'very pissed off' over not hugely important matters (imo of course)

rosybud · 22/11/2007 21:42

shedload of red wine is very calming i find.

notnowbernard, good idea for NY resolution.

I feel as though i (silently) criticize my friends too much and wonder if they are doing it about me too?

snowleopard, i think you are right, you do realise how many people are so selfish and boring! but maybe i am one of them and don't realise??? [self pity]

rosybud · 22/11/2007 21:44

Yama, think i may have used 'it makes my blood boil' just yesterday.

also find i am saying 'when i was a child...'

and 'my parents never let me get away with...'

but ohhhhh a good moan is sooo therapeutic.

OP posts:
yama · 22/11/2007 21:47

I think saying 'Back in the day ....' can be very therapeautic. I like to parody the old-style frustrated older person in the hope that I will forget that I am getting on a bit myself.

Think it works.

snowleopard · 22/11/2007 21:50

You're intolerant, unreasonable and cantankerous though Rosybud - fine qualities in a woman of a certain age. Who needs selfish and boring?

I do also criticize, or perhaps the word is judge, people I know, in my own head. I think things like FFS, stop being such a drip! or bloody hell woman, your child bores the pants off me - and that's about close friends! I hope they do do it too, it would make me feel less bad about it...

rosybud · 22/11/2007 21:51

maybe we are all trapped in the same time tunnel.
we have no choice but to utter irritating/irritable cliches.
will start carring umbrella/walking stick to wave threateningly at the yoof......

OP posts:
ClassAct · 22/11/2007 21:53

Agree with Desiderata. Younger types are far more impatient, snappier, judgemental and generally uptight these days. Find myself saying things like "and why do you think they acted in that way?" when some young turk comes out with that stupid 'muppet' name-call.

Suspect it's something like them feeling a 'demand' to be cleverer than their years can afford them to be, and so they get all defensive and dismissive.

Poor things.

rosybud · 22/11/2007 21:53

oh no snowleopard, i am hoping my friends chat amongst themselves about my sunny disposition/caring nature/beauty [v hopeful emoticon]

This thread has made me realize that as an older mum, I try to avoid anything that suggests I'm old in front of my kid.

OK, he's only three, but he's no slouch. I was 39 when I had ds ... the last thing on earth I'm going to say to him is 'in my day ...'

Jesus, the lad would crucify me

Sushipaws · 22/11/2007 21:56

I became easy to irritate when I became a mother, I no longer have time to be selfish.....that also pisses me off......oh FFS stop blathering woman......!

Desiderata · 22/11/2007 21:56

ClassAct ... watch this.

THUD.

ClassAct · 22/11/2007 21:57

I'm new. What does that mean? Is it good or bad???

Desiderata · 22/11/2007 21:59

It's good.

Honestly

Wotzupnow · 22/11/2007 22:00

I feel the older I get the time is more precious and therefore needs to be used more wisely. So things that produce negative outcomes are less desirable to spend more time on.

I asked my nan when she was in her 90's if her day went more slowly with less to do. She said as the years went by, it went faster and she didn't feel she could catch up with all the things she still wanted to do and everything took that much longer to get done.

Don't waste time. It can't be replaced. 10 minutes reading a bedtime story can not be done so easily when they have left home.

ClassAct · 22/11/2007 22:02

Tease.

wowoo · 22/11/2007 22:04
