Would you go and exercise in a smallish studio after you've been double jabbed?

I'm doubled jabbed. I exercise - strength/circuit/HITT type classes - in a studio with about 12-15 others at a time. There's no contact sports, we just do our own thing but obviously we are working alongside other people. The back door is left open.

I've been going the past two weeks and it's great to be back. But today, I had three calls from parents who've teen kids have Covid. Not local to me, different cities, but still.

Most of the people who go to the studio are young and won't have been vaxed.

Am I being silly going? Or if I go, should I wear a mask?

It's really helpful for me to go mentally, aside from anything else, but now I'm worried

I’d carry on going.

monkeysox · 28/06/2021 21:13

Is just go tbh. But I'm a teacher mixing with loads of people every day. Are you vulnerable?

loulouljh · 28/06/2021 21:14

Would do it without being double jabbed!

Liveonyournerves · 28/06/2021 21:15

No, not vulnerable. Concerned about getting long covid, rather than Covid tbh. I'm the perfect menopausal demographic

I'm surprised your gym allow that many people in a small room. At my gym it is much lower numbers, and we have to stick to a particular "station" that we clean thoroughly after use. However if you are double jabbed the risk is v low - I'm not yet double jabbed and I'm going.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 28/06/2021 21:20

I’m double jabbed and I’m not going to similar classes at my gym. I don’t want to be in an enclosed space with 10 people breathing and panting heavily at the moment. My gym are doing pilates and yoga outdoors at the moment and I’m going to those instead as well as playing tennis.

Liveonyournerves · 29/06/2021 09:58

It's so hard to know what's right. There are so many benefits to going.

Maybe I can wear a mask...

Not in a small room unless it was well ventilated with doors/ windows open. I'm surprised they're letting than many in a small space .

Luckystar1 · 29/06/2021 10:01

To me, the benefits of going would far outweigh (what I personally consider to be) the very small risk of contracting Covid and the resultant smaller risk of getting long Covid.

But then, I’m blasé about it all in any event (I’m also doubly vaccinated)

MrsDThomas · 29/06/2021 10:06

Id go jabbed or not. Live your life.

What good dies thinking “what if” do to you?

AwkwardSquad · 29/06/2021 10:07

I’m mid-50s and I’m going to yoga classes in a small studio. Numbers are limited, most of the demographic should have had at least one jab, back door left open for ventilation. As a pp said, for me the benefits outweigh the risks.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 29/06/2021 10:08

I think the issue is less actually getting Covid now and more the inconvenience of having to self isolate it someone else tests positive

I love my gym and I am going today on my day off work and have done as much as allowed. It's a big industrial estate type place so the whole front is open for air, you have to wipe everything religiously and I don't think it's a big risk.

However I got a call from them a few weeks back to say someone there at the same time had tested positive and I'd been contact traced. There is no get out of jail free for that although I have had COVID, am double jabbed and take a weekly PCR for work. Fortunately for me the contact was over ten days ago by the time I was contacted (very effective T&T) but if I'd been told to self isolate it would have caused tonnes of issues at work and at home including cancelling DS birthday party.

It gave me a pause for thought if I can afford to risk the exposure and isolation risk even though I have zero fear of Covid. I'm still going today but if local case rates go up I'll have to review.

Rrrrrrrrr · 29/06/2021 10:25

I am now double jabbed but risk averse and won’t go back to the gym yet.

If you’re worried are there any Zoom/outdoor classes near you? That’s what I do 2 x Zoom classes a week and adding one class in the park from next week.

Takingabreakagain · 29/06/2021 10:33

I would go and I've had no vaccines
I'm not sure how much more protection you want if you've had both. Were you this worried about any other virus or illness? If so you probably should seek help about your health anxiety. Exercise is good for you and being fit and healthy will help you if you did contract covid in the future.

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 29/06/2021 10:39

I'm a fitness instructor - we have very strict rules around numbers based around square footage and ventilation - there has to be 4 sq m per participant (2m between participants in any direction) and they have to stay within their designated area - I use silicon floor spots to mark it out and other venues I teach in have boxes taped out on the floor. One of my venues is a massive hall and can only have a maximum of 15 people. I've heard of people disregarding rules and packing 20 odd participants into much smaller venues than mine - really not good.

If this is a small studio I'd be asking them whether they are adhering to government guidelines on numbers - 12-15 people in a small studio doesn't sound right.

Medstudent12 · 29/06/2021 10:40

Not scared of catching covid. I’d be wary of the risk of needing to isolate though if someone was positive in the class, that’s why I wouldn’t bother at the moment.

Justcallmebebes · 29/06/2021 11:05

I would and am going as normal to the gym and to exercise classes. We have a large studio with a maximum of 15 people. All mixed ages.

I would have to be away dragged screaming if they close again

LittleGwyneth · 29/06/2021 11:21

I've been going since it reopened, way before I'd had any vaccine at all.

RugratMum · 29/06/2021 11:23

Well, 10% of those hospitalised with the Indian variant have been double jabbed, or so I heard on the radio a week or so back.

It's up to you.

everybodysang · 29/06/2021 11:27

Surely the question should be:

"Were you worried about any other pandemic?"

Otherwise it seems a bit disingenuous.

megletthesecond · 29/06/2021 11:37

I'm not back indoors at the gym yet, it doesn't have windows to ventilate.

I'm being yelled at outside at an army bootcamp for the time being.

Takingabreakagain · 29/06/2021 11:42

It's not a pandemic anymore. We have vast amounts of knowledge regarding who it affects the most, we have vaccinated the vulnerable and many more in addition to that. Out of all the 'cases' just three people died of the virus yesterday. I'm just not sure why some people are still living in fear of this virus.

I'm very wary still even though people aren't dying in their thousands now. I know people with long Covid , people who have had to isolate again...and again and now schools are shutting down due to outbreaks ( our local secondary closed completely, and 2 primaries have whole years closed) I also know of people who have had the virus after being double vaccinated. So while we do know much more than we did last year we are nowhere near out of the woods yet .

DeathByWalkies · 29/06/2021 11:59

You wouldn't find me in an exercise studio under any circumstances (well, maybe at gunpoint) but if I was going to go then as a double jabbed person covid wouldn't stop me.

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 29/06/2021 12:08

I get it, but you're also somewhat falling victim to availability bias here -- you've heard about three other instances where someone has acquired covid, so naturally your mind has focused on it.

But the cases you've heard about aren't connected to your class in any way. So why are you more likely to get it now than last time you went to a class?

Personally, I would continue to go. If you've had two doses of vaccine you're as protected as you're going to get.

But it is your decision. Bodily autonomy and all that.

(I'm not sure I'd be attempting to do HIIT in a mask, incidentally. But again, your choice.)
