Hair extensions or a pixie cut?

I've been growing out a pixie cut which was very short for almost 10 months now. It's a chin length Bob when it's straight, the only problem is that it looks awful unless a hairdresser does it.
It's not all a uniform length yet which doesn't help, and most days it flicks out majorly so I look like the lady from Balamory.
I had a fringe put in too which was a bad idea as it just looks like a mop.
Even if I try to blow-dry it myself it looks awful, and i don't want to damage my hair by doing it every day.

I've got some hair extensions which I can put in. They're good quality but still a pain to look after, or I can go back to a pixie which does suit me. I like to change my hair often and I get comments about this a lot from friends, however many of them have had the same style for most of their life, which is up to them but they think I'm some sort of oddball as i change mine a lot and it makes me feel self conscious.
I know I do suit a pixie, i just need to keep to one length. I feel it looks awful currently, and too short to do anything with.
What should i do? First world problems I know!

Have quite thick hair too so it just looks like a huge bush.

Pixie!

Tyrasanchez30 · 28/06/2021 15:56

I'm tempted, I really like the style Frankie Bridge has. Just feel like this awful in between style is going on forever and feel unattractive.

I'd go extensions. I cut my hair short recently and regret it sooooo much.

FlaminEckVera · 28/06/2021 15:59

Can we see a pic? You can blank your face out.

FlaminEckVera · 28/06/2021 16:02

FWIW I have curly/wavy hair, and look like Harpo Marx when it's short! Shock I am in my early 50s and have had my hair 4-5" past my shoulders since was about 7. (Except for 1-2 years when I had it cut short in the late 1990s,) and regretted it badly. Couldn't wait for it to grow! I will never ever EVER have it short again!

SwimBaby · 28/06/2021 16:04

Could you keep it at the length it is and grow out the layers?

Tyrasanchez30 · 28/06/2021 16:15

Here's the pic, sorry it's not great quality, just to show how much it flicks out.

Hair extensions or a pixie cut?

It sounds like it's between styles, so depends what you're aiming for? Are you wanting a mid/long length hair style, or are you likely to lop it off as soon as it gets to shoulder length anyway?

Not that it's wrong to do so, but if you're hating the in-between growth and don't actually have any plans for long hair, then why suffer it.

Extentions would be good as a trial run for long hair, see if you like it and want to style it. You can always remove extentions whereas, as you're discovering it's harder to undo a pixie cut if you get bored of it.

Have you had it cut since the pixie cut - you said you got a fringe but if it's still quite mixed length then maybe it needs a cut? It might seem like a step back, going shorter but if it then grows back at more even length then the in-between length might be more bearable.

I have really long hair, and tbh I rarely make the most of its length - its normally clipped up at the back, occassionly a long plait. So no harm in going straight back to a pixie.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 28/06/2021 16:19

I don't know who the woman from Balamory is, but I'm getting a librarian vibe from your picture ( no offence to librarians)
If you can rock a pixie, do it. I'd give anything to experience a pixie cut but with my face it's not an option.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 28/06/2021 16:26

I would say pixie cut. Hair extensions rarely look great unless they're very expensive, well maintained and professionally done. I'm guessing you have clip ins since you say you already have them? Long term use can lead to stress bald patches where they're attached / cause damage to your own hair. Your hair is very thick and the flicking out will take a lot of styling to sit correctly with extensions. I used to wear them a lot as my hair doesn't get much longer than yours and always dreamed of long glossy hair, and there we're days they looked great but required a lot of upkeep and styling of my own hair (and all that heat wrecked it!) to blend the layers and make them look somewhat natural.

SwimBaby · 28/06/2021 16:35

KupoNutCoffee I used to be like that with my long hair, now I have just above bra strap length hair and have banned myself from having it up all the time. I do a have it up around the house sometimes but other than that i have down either straightened or curled. I feel like I have more hair now even though it’s a bit shorter (4 inches) than it used to be.

Tyrasanchez30 · 28/06/2021 16:52

Thanks for the replies and feedback. I do get the librarian thing!
I just want it long enough to tie up/plait without it all falling out, but I've had months and months of this awful in between style and that could be another year away.

I have the LA weave extensions at home, I was told by the extensionist that these ones don't cause damage to hair but maybe that's wrong.

I'll have to think it over ! Just feel so bland right now.

Extensions definitely.

oh my goodness you do have the flicky out bits like the woman in Balamory!!

I say persevere with it ... another inch or two will make a world of difference. I had a pixie that took an age to grow out, and I hated those awkward stages in between. I now have a ponytail that is my pride and joy (those who have had short hair and grew it will know the pride of being able to get it into a ponytail!)

Twistered · 28/06/2021 17:03

Have just looked at your picture again. I can see how a pixie would be very flattering on you. Decisions decisions!!!!

LongLiveGoblingKing · 28/06/2021 17:07

I think weaves look better than extensions if that's an option?

JaninaDuszejko · 28/06/2021 17:10

Don't worry about this, people comment on your hair because it's nice to notice haircuts. I change mine all the time, similar to you I've currently got a flicky bob after having had a pixie before the pandemic and trying to decide what to do with it. And my hairdresser is currently on maternity so it's being cut by someone else who isn't as good so don't want a restyle till my hairdresser comes back.

SquirrelFan · 28/06/2021 17:30

I quite like the Balamory lady's hair...

Figgyboa · 28/06/2021 17:53

I would have thought it's too short for extensions. To blend in properly your hair would need to be shoulder length. I actually think it looks fine as is but if that's not an option pixie cut away

SchrodingersMat · 28/06/2021 17:57

I like it as it is, reminds me of the Amelie film.

GeidiPrimes · 28/06/2021 18:06

There's other short cuts, not just a pixie! You could have a shag 😃

Attempted to attach pic with no joy, but if you google Helena Christenson 90s shag hair you'll see what I mean

Tyrasanchez30 · 28/06/2021 18:20

The extensions seem to blend pretty well when I have my hair down, the only problem is that I can't tie them up unless it's in a very very low ponytail as it shows my own short hair underneath.
I could try and bear the extensions for 6 months or so and let it grow out.

Thanks for the comments though, I think we're always our own worst critics.

If you can't style it nicely then grow it out. Short hair in my opinion is way too much hard work and why I keep it long.
