You’re single and in a bar and meet someone, it’s love at first sight. You’re chatting and then he/she introduces themselves and their name is………………..
Are there any dealbreakers for you? A name you just can’t get past? For me it’s über American masculine names such Hunter, Rock, Falcon (yes seriously).
When Kate Winslet met Ned Rocknroll did she think “gosh what a lark” or “sounds like a complete tosser”?
I also once met a Mr Wankum and thought there is no way I could become Mrs Wankum.
This post is just for fun, I’m not seriously going to reject someone because of a name (well maybe Wankum).

I once met a guy called Cleetus.

He was a lovely guy, but I couldn't imagine screaming his name in a moment of passion 🤣🤣

FakeTanandProsecco · 28/06/2021 09:13

Wankus CANNOT be a real name?!! That would also put me off.

For me it's Keith, sorry Keith's of the world!

FakeTanandProsecco · 28/06/2021 09:14

*Wankum

Sparklfairy · 28/06/2021 09:15

My dad's/brother's name (one of which is very common. Just weird, no matter how amazing the bloke was Grin

The male version of my name. We'd be a laughing stock as a couple.

Thankfully I don't come across too many wacky names on OLD, my problem is I have a tendency to date men with the SAME names, sometimes even back to back so when talking about them to others I have to give them additional labels I.e. "no that wasn't dickhead Mark, it was crazy Mark" Grin

Justcallmebebes · 28/06/2021 09:20

Many moons ago I met an absolute drop dead gorgeous bloke on a night in a town I was temporarily visiting. We were in a club and had a dance and snogged each others faces off and I couldn't believe my luck.

Found out his name was Walter and that did it for me. So fickle. I've thought of him over the years and wondered what if I hadn't been so immature and fickle because he really was drop dead gorgeous and seemed really nice too.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 28/06/2021 09:22

my own name.
that'd be weird

I don't judge people because of their names, though I might judge their parents

DysmalRadius · 28/06/2021 09:28

I know three couples called Chris and Christina and my brother's wife has the same name as me. For some reason, as a child, I thought Derek was the most beautiful name and he featured as the male lead in all my stories. I have no idea what I was on and now think I might struggle with a Derek my own age because it seems so out of time.

Weirdly, I did have a crush on a Bernard, but he was from the US, so it was Bern-aaard rather than Burn-ud which made it seem it seem much less like one of my grandad's friends!

paniniswapx3 · 28/06/2021 09:43

@FakeTanandProsecco Wankum is absolutely a real name - Mike Wankum is the weather presenter on Channel 5 in Boston, MA.

Not as bad in the US as wanker isn't a word that's used but still makes me childishly snigger Grin

ComtesseDeSpair · 28/06/2021 09:52

I think I’d struggle with somebody with the same (relatively unusual and very 1950s) name as my dad. And Cuthbert would take some getting used to.

However, DP never uses his given name and goes by an abbreviated version of his surname which rhymes with cock. It was a bit odd when we first met, but I’ve now called him by it for so long that when anyone actually calls him by his given name it takes me a while to work out who they’re talking about.

MrsFin · 28/06/2021 09:53

I know a Mr Allison who married a lady called Alison.

I've always wanted to marry Tomasz Schafernaker just for his name!

peachyandkeen · 28/06/2021 09:56

@FakeTanandProsecco another vote for Keith here too!

Wrotten · 28/06/2021 10:10

I couldn't date a man with the same name as my dad (Graham).

We are still connected on LinkedIn and he's very successful so it's definitely my loss 🤣

BigusBumus · 28/06/2021 10:21

I may be horribly snobby but I would struggle to date a Dwayne, Darren, Wayne, Lee, Kevin, Kyle etc

30degreesandmeltinghere · 28/06/2021 10:23

I did indeed meet a stranger in a bar.. His surname is an item associated with my job.
I took his first name as my surname instead!!
Grin

My husband’s name is one of these and I’ve always hated it!

GiantWingedWaspMoth · 28/06/2021 10:43

Brian.

I hate it. I don't mind Bryan though.

I think it's because of someone I knew with that name in school. Awful person. I know a very lovely Bryan though.

StevieNix · 28/06/2021 10:46

Met a guy in a bar called Wayne - I know it’s fickle but I just couldn’t!

peachyandkeen · 28/06/2021 11:42

@BigusBumus completely agree - Dwayne, Darren, Wayne, Lee, Kevin, Kyle would all be dealbreakers for me!!

And as PPs have said — also Wayne and also Brian. Uhhh. No.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 28/06/2021 12:27

Kenneth. I don't really know why, it just sounds so wanky to me.
Derivatives are no better. Ken/Kenny ugh.

Brian is a "Boomer" era name. Old fashioned but not old fashioned enough to have come back around yet.

However, I could make an exception for the lovely Brian Cox. Wink
Agree with those that say the masculine version of their own name. It's a damn shame too. There is a gorgeous actor on TV atm with my name in man form and I just cant get past it Grin

Sparklfairy · 28/06/2021 13:07

Re dwayne, its an awful name but if The Rock handed himself to me on a plate like fuck would I say no Grin

Completely agree with this Grin
Ponoka7 · 28/06/2021 13:16

Maurice and Derek I'd struggle with. Being in my 50's I can get over some listed here because I know nice people who are called them.
I'd feel a tit if I met a Spanish guy and he wanted me to call him his full name and it was something like Edwardo.

May I offer Jason, as a teacher I never taught an intelligent Jason and I was teaching at a time it was popular!

We were introduced to him once, I'd never heard of him though, it was a casual Hello! He was starting to film Baywatch on Tybee Island in Georgia, I think it was a cheaper place than California we were told.
Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/06/2021 13:33

"I once met a man named Mr Wankem".

Please tell me his first name was Willie 😂😂😂
