To think it's weird how Matt Hancock signed his resignation letter?

Just read MH's resignation letter - which was addressed to Boris Johnson. Does this say "Yours ever"??? Isn't this a peculiar signing off of professional letter to your boss?

Not particularly odd, no.

TenThousandSpoons · 27/06/2021 08:49

I read it as
Yours, errr, Matt

Takingabreakagain · 27/06/2021 08:51

I saw Boris's reply and thought the handwriting part looks very similar. Did the same person top and tail both letters?

VenusStarr · 27/06/2021 08:51

@TenThousandSpoons

I read it as Yours, errr, Matt
😂

Other things may have been on his mind at the time, perhaps.

Itsamess8456 · 27/06/2021 08:53

I've always thought of yours ever, as an affectionate sign off - kind of to your family or partner. Perhaps my knowledge on English letter writing is lacking.

He signed it Yours Ever , very common way to sign letters

MyFloorIsLava · 27/06/2021 08:55

Well he can hardly write yours sincerely, since any genuine sincerity causes the current government to burst into flames.

LucysSkyDiamonds · 27/06/2021 09:01

I thought it was a poorly written "yours etc", like in a letter to the editor.

Hahahaha! I genuinely belly laughed at this. I wish there was some sort of "comment of the week" award I could nominate you for...

Crikey my family would think I was bonkers if I used 'yours ever' - it's much too formal to use with someone close.

queenMab99 · 27/06/2021 09:05

And he couldn't write 'yours faithfully' because he is not!

EssexLioness · 27/06/2021 09:11

I initially read it as ‘love ‘em, Matt’ until I read the comments 😂 definitely thought that was an inappropriate sign off!

Spidey66 · 27/06/2021 09:13

Yours Aye?

Very formal and old fashioned way of signing letters.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 27/06/2021 09:15

Boris has written the same thing in his response letter. It definitely looks like yours ever. I've never heard of that before as a sign off but maybe it's a posh thing

bumblingbovine49 · 27/06/2021 09:16

Bloody hell, I am no fan of Matt Hancock but imagine a life where your hand written resignation letter is published for millions to pick over forensically in order to criticise what is written on in including how he signs it!!

I never thought I'd find myself feeling slightly sorry for a member of our incompetent, corrupt government but I do

Medievalist · 27/06/2021 09:27

It's clearly yours ever - not sure how people are seeing anything else!

Kpo58 · 27/06/2021 09:32

Maybe he has sold his soul to Boris/the Tory's and will literally be theirs forever?

DumplingsAndStew · 27/06/2021 09:35

No idea what you're all reading, but the squiggle in the attached photo quite clearly says "Your [sic] eww, Matt"

RailingOnAndOn · 27/06/2021 09:41

Yes it's odd, as is everything about the guy and his odd boss.

Bagelsandbrie · 27/06/2021 09:46

I found this odd too. Never heard of signing off as “yours ever”.

RailingOnAndOn · 27/06/2021 09:49

Maybe I should put it down to posh speak for never dob me in to the busies pal.🤷

Youdiditanyway · 27/06/2021 09:50

I thought this too. I’ve always considered yours to be quite affectionate, usually between lovers. Maybe he was indirectly trying to tell us all something.

Geamhradh · 27/06/2021 09:52

Yours Ever is formal, and pretty usual for politicians.
In a former life, I wrote politicians' letters. They OK them, and sign them. The rest is written by civil servants. Occasionally, the politician might dictate the content, probably did so in this case, but the topping and tailing is the only really personal bit.

the80sweregreat · 27/06/2021 09:54

I've never heard of this either.
Sincerely is the usual way , or faithfully.
(Then again, I went to a sink secondary school in East London , so it could be a posh way of signing off letters)
