Just that really. A fake celebration created as a money spinner. How is it even supposed to be "celebrated'?

OP posts:
DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 25/06/2021 10:50

I've never heard of it, I cant blame people for wanting a little extra celebration and happiness given the last couple of years though.

mbosnz · 25/06/2021 10:54

Hmmm, for me, it could be a goer, a Summer Christmas - good for us Antipodeans as a slice of home! (A bit like how we have mid-winter Christmas over there in July).

Loyaultemelie · 25/06/2021 10:58

We celebrate the summer solstice so I don't really see an issue with Junemas 🤷‍♀️

mbosnz · 25/06/2021 10:59

Of course, we're not going to decorate, or buy presents, but what a marvellous excuse for a really bonza barbie. . .

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/06/2021 10:59

Also never heard of it.

BrieAndChilli · 25/06/2021 11:00

is it actually a thing? I havent seen anything in shops etc but do know of a few families getting together as they couldnt at xmas.

Gullible2021 · 25/06/2021 11:02

Never heard of Junemas but Christmas in July has been a big thing via the Hallmark Channel for many years now. I have friends who do it. When "Christmas was cancelled" last year, in terms of spending it with family, I wondered if alot of people would have a designated day to do Christmas In July or something to make up for the missed time.

Not my cup of tea at all but I can see why it would appeal to some people and I'm all
for people enjoying life as much as they can.

TwoShades1 · 25/06/2021 11:05

I’m in Australia but lots of people do a “Christmas in July” get together with family or friends. Christmas in Australia is often hot as it’s summer so food is often lighter with more seafood and salads. Doing a Christmas in July (when it’s winter and cold) means that we can do lots of the hotter Christmas dishes popular in the northern hemisphere and wear Christmas jumpers, etc.

billyt · 25/06/2021 11:06

Junemas is cringe as fuck.

But as we couldn't do it in December, we did have our (Covid-compliant)Christmas family get together with all the trimmings a week or two ago. Tree up, turkey etc. Little presents.

CakesOfVersailles · 25/06/2021 11:08

Possibly ridiculous. Mind you, living in New Zealand we used to celebrate "mid-winter Christmas" which given the location was in July.

MoreAloneTime · 25/06/2021 11:10

I've not heard of this one, where is this word being used?

RufustheBadgeringReindeer · 25/06/2021 11:15

Yes i know people doing this
BarbaraofSeville · 25/06/2021 11:21

If we'd actually had the end of restrictions this week, it would have been a good excuse for family gatherings, especially as Christmas was so restricted but I don't see the need for decorations, trees, presents etc, but a meal or BBQ would be good and not necessarily a money/commercial thing.

godmum56 · 25/06/2021 11:24

looks like its something aldi have done

Slimmingstar · 25/06/2021 11:29

I think it’s Lidl or Aldi that are pushing/creating it. You can get their mince pies this week…….
It does no one any harm, so……….

QueeniesCroft · 25/06/2021 11:32

The feast of the nativity of John the Baptist is 24th June, I think (I lose track of dates a lot). Loads of Catholics I know are marking it in a much bigger way this year, understandably.
If people want to celebrate the opening of a tube of toothpaste, then that's fine by me. If it were to become expected or excessive, then that's another thing, but let them find joy where they can. I think we've had enough misery for a while, don't you?

SpacePotato · 25/06/2021 11:34

Yes, it can fuck off along with all those who put the stupid 'only x days til Christmas' memes on FB.

OldTinHat · 25/06/2021 11:35

You are a miserable sourpuss OP! I spent Christmas alone dining on weight watchers meals. I had originally planned to travel to see my family which obviously was cancelled thanks to another lockdown. So yay, bring on Junemas for those of us who were alone, sobbed all day, felt suicidal and couldn't even face getting out of bed at Christmas.

MaloInAnAppleTree · 25/06/2021 11:37

I’ve done Christmas at February half-term on a couple of occasions because elderly relatives were unavailable on December 25th. Turkey ordered in from the butcher, crackers and mince pies stored from the Boxing Day sales.

If I were delaying all the way until June then it would be genuinely handy to be able to get in-date mince pies and Christmas pudding.

AlanThePig · 25/06/2021 11:39

We did Christmas in June at a baseball game in California years ago. They do it every year. It was actually brilliant. Huge trees outside the stadium, carols, gifts for everyone who attended (I was given a wooden nutcracker). It was surreal given the California weather, but it was great fun.

BIWI · 25/06/2021 11:41

Don't see the problem with it - lots of people couldn't be with family/friends at Christmas, so this is their chance to do it now.

We had ours in May - so Maymas, I suppose! We still had all the presents wrapped that we hadn't been able to give, so put them around a little fake tree that we have, with some fairy lights. Cooked the same meal I would have cooked in December (it was cold enough in May!), and had crackers and Christmas table accessories.

It was fun!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/06/2021 11:44

QVC have done Christmas in July for the past 20 years (though it used to be good , bit meh for the past few years )

Aldi have given us Junemas and I do fancy a mince pie right now .

I am regularly on the Christmas Threads (and yes keep the subject on there till December )

But I really dislike the snippy attitude where poeple pretend not to understand that maybe others do things different .
And all the "Elf on the Shelf/ Christmas Eve Hamper/Dec 1st Hamper" Is this A THING now ? What a load of plastic tat . More presents? You don't need more presents. What next Boxing Day Hamper/ Just more work ..............

Well no-one is holding a gun to your head .
If it doesn't appeal , ignore it .

I don't get the appeal of many things , I don;t see why others should be denied though

Oh and a Xmas Hmm Xmas Wink Xmas Smile for good measure

PigsEnigma · 25/06/2021 11:45

I don't really know how it's a money spinner. We're celebrating because we didn't all get together as a family at Christmas. We've not bought a real tree as we would usually, just got the artificial tree down from the roof. Would have had a family roast anyway so aside from some Sprouts and Chestnuts haven't spent more than we would normally there. OK we've done a teeny secret santa but nobody forced us to do that. We had crackers, Christmas pudding and napkins all left from the Christmas we didn't have so yeah, we're celebrating and after this shit year, why the hell not.

BIWI · 25/06/2021 11:54

Totally agree @PigsEnigma.

There was absolutely nothing fake about our desire to be with family, which included my DS2 who wasn't allowed to come home for actual Christmas.

TuckMyWin · 25/06/2021 11:57

Not sure what your issue is or how it’s a money spinner, either. We didn’t get to do Christmas with my family in December, so we’re doing it this weekend. I’m not calling it ‘Junemas’ mind you, because I’m not 12.
