To think 'Junemas' is ridiculous?

Just that really. A fake celebration created as a money spinner. How is it even supposed to be "celebrated'?

Ooo love a mince pie, must tell DH
(missing the general point and haven’t heard of this at all).

WeirdCatLady · 25/06/2021 11:58

We are doing JuneMas. It’s just a bit of fun ffs. We have fun little gifts, pigs in blankets and mince pies. Personally, I love a bit of whimsy, especially at the moment.

No one is holding a shotgun to your head forcing you to partake.

Crepescular · 25/06/2021 11:58

I'll just leave this here...

choirmumoftwo · 25/06/2021 12:01

We're celebrating Happy Half New Year with friends next weekend having not been able to get together for so long. Just a bit of fun.

Gilead · 25/06/2021 12:07

If it cheers someone up then great. Just ignore if you’re not keen!

3scape · 25/06/2021 12:12

We do Midsummer with family (normally) but we have had to skip it this year. With figures at the moment I'm not sure why anyone is rushing to party it up right now (?!) I mean, great for footballers of course but the rest of us mere mortals still try to act responsibly and not book random parties Hmm

ToffeePennie · 25/06/2021 12:13

@Slimmingstar

I think it’s Lidl or Aldi that are pushing/creating it. You can get their mince pies this week……. It does no one any harm, so……….
FINALLY!! I CRAVED their mince pies when I was pregnant with my second. Come July and I was crying because I wanted one so badly. My MIL eventually managed to track down some mincemeat and made me some, but my gosh I was drooling!
BackforGood · 25/06/2021 12:13

Not heard it given a label, but we are getting together with extended family in the next couple of weeks to all meet up, as we weren't able to do it at Christmas.
I suspect loads of families, or friendship groups will be.
I like getting together with other people, and have missed it.

Come to think of it though, we'd always have a "Half way to Christmas" part in June, back when I was a Venture Scout, 40 years ago......

ToffeePennie · 25/06/2021 12:14

Oh and junemas is a no go, because 15th July is DS birthday.

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 25/06/2021 12:14

I'm sure retailers would love it if it had become a big thing but it was slightly spoiled by the fact that the June 21st lifting of restrictions was pushed back and we still have rules in place for gatherings and the cases rising which casts a bit of a cloud. Still I wouldn't say no to a June mince pie!

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 25/06/2021 12:16

I don't think it is a thing usually... I just assumed Aldi were doing it this year to make up for having a shit Christmas 2020 where we were all banned from seeing each other?

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 25/06/2021 12:19

Yes I think that's what it was spunbob I saw a few ads for it and heard of a few people planning to have a family gathering.

DeadButDelicious · 25/06/2021 12:24

Christmas was a lonely, depressing, wash out for a lot of people last year, I see absolutely no harm in families getting together now and celebrating Junemas or whatever.

I think it's quite nice.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 25/06/2021 12:27

Ah , today is my DD Birthday and not Hell or HighWater takes priority over that ! (Sorry Christmas #2 you're on the back burner ) .

newnortherner111 · 25/06/2021 12:27

Seems another celebration created to encourage spending. Why not celebrate midsummer's day, or as in many European countries, the feast of St Peter and Paul (June 29th), when those who fish are honoured (whilst we still have the fishing industry despite the government selling it down the river).

Bbq1 · 25/06/2021 12:29

@OldTinHat

You are a miserable sourpuss OP! I spent Christmas alone dining on weight watchers meals. I had originally planned to travel to see my family which obviously was cancelled thanks to another lockdown. So yay, bring on Junemas for those of us who were alone, sobbed all day, felt suicidal and couldn't even face getting out of bed at Christmas.
No, not miserable or a sour puss @OldTinhat. Quite the opposite actually. I totally get people wanting to celebrate with family and friends and it makes sense that we are getting together. What I think is UR is creating it a fake celebration it's not necessary. Do you need a reason or name to get together with your family and friends?

Washlinewaster · 25/06/2021 12:31

It's one Captial radio isn't it?!

I thought it was a fun idea TBH. Given the frankly shit year most people in my life have had, I'm quite happy for any excuse for a piss up with friends and family right now.

SecretThermalsAreTheBest · 25/06/2021 12:31

Well, for those of us that had to miss seeing our families inside for over a year due to them being clinically extremely vulnerable, and missed getting to celebrate with the usual family games and dinner etc etc and missed out on walks and just spending time together...

Why not?

Take part if you want to, don't if you don't.

PixieKitten · 25/06/2021 12:32

Embarrassing

Ethelswith · 25/06/2021 12:34

We had our 'Half Christmas' family BBQ last weekend! Theme was Father Christmas and Kangaroos

I don't take to the 'Junemas' name, but the idea of meeting up now, mainly outdoors, as we couldn't in December, really suited us this year.

ifherbumwereabungalow · 25/06/2021 12:47

We are having Christmas 2: Electric Boogaloo in July if we are allowed, can't wait and the kids will be thrilled to finally get presents from their grandparents and aunties.
