Love Island AIBU?

Polkadots2021 · 23/06/2021 07:17

Just read a couple of 'highlights' from Love Island contestants for this year. One said the kind of man she's after is the kind who would 'rip her a new a##hole' and another said she had sex 8 times a day and had sex in a toilet the day before.

God only knows the effect this kind of stuff has on young teens of both genders who watch it. So much for Love Island caring less about mental health or looking after contestants more.

AIBU in thinking this is just out of control now?
YABU - Love Island is just a bit of fun
YANBU - Love Island has gone way too far (again)

One said the kind of man she's after is the kind who would 'rip her a new asshole'

Agree with PP that she meant 'tear a strip off her / banter mercilessly'- it wasntna sexual statement (as her oops comment immediately afterwards made clear)l. Also agree that it's a horrible phrase (much commoner in US than here, and perhaps it has a different resonance there?)

I do wonder why, just for one year, they couldn't get normal looking people to enter

A teacher, a builder, a civil, servant are amongst thus lot. But as these people may become RL 'famous' as a result, and acquire a huge social media following, they screen for people who will cope with the attention, and that often means those who prove they can cope because they are already coping.

I'm not sure how far it's scripted - there are the set piece challenges, which are designed to spark reactions, and it's clear some of those are set up to maximise the chances of upsets happening. And it's also clear that couples are sat down to talk about a set theme, but I don't think what they say it scripted.

And of course it's all edited

Between the “sex, sex, sex!” and new asshole comments in their “meet the islanders” interview and the thong bikinis with half their boobs hanging out the bottom it does seem a bit like the girls are just cheapening themselves from the word go.

CurryLover55 · 29/06/2021 16:20

I vowed never to watch it but somehow fell into watching the last series with Molly Mae, Tommy etc & I was hooked! It’s trash but if you can take a step back & understand it’s for entertainment then you’re ok. What worries me is that younger folks will want to emulate the contestants.

AngeloMysterioso · 29/06/2021 16:23

Agree with PP that she meant 'tear a strip off her / banter mercilessly'- it wasn’t a sexual statement (as her oops comment immediately afterwards made clear)

Oh, come on. She fully planned to say that, it was the most disingenuous “oops! ” in the history of television...

AuntieStella · 29/06/2021 16:24

Just been a bit of a saddo, and checked the occupations of the first ten

civil servant (department of transport), luxury events host, student and waitress, PE teacher, model, engineer (water), fashion blogger, financial services marketing executive, semi-pro footballer, letting manager, builder,

so a fairly mixed bunch and I'd describe 7 of them as normal occupations.

Huge apology for misreading normal-looking as normal people!

As nearly the whole show is in swimwear, it's bound to attract those whonare very confident in their body's appearance

The bikini tops are terrible - are people really wearing ones like that? But would we even know, as next to no sunny holidays have been happening for so long?

valnevavaxx · 29/06/2021 16:26

'Normal-looking' Hmm

Also, nothing wrong with having sex as many times as a day as you want. HTH.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/06/2021 16:26

Saying that stuff is what got her a place on the show.🤷‍♀️

Absolutely there isn’t. But does it need to be the first thing you tell half the TV watching nation about yourself?
Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/06/2021 16:27

All the young people I know watch it with their cynical hats on. They are far too smart to take it seriously. Everyone likes to gawp in grim fascination at the underboobs and the veneers.

valnevavaxx · 29/06/2021 16:28

@AngeloMysterioso It's a dating show about hooking up with people, what do you expect them to talk about- the weather?

Chicchicchicchiclana · 29/06/2021 16:29

Who said she had sex 8 times a day not that I'm watching it of course.

guest2013 · 29/06/2021 16:33

I wonder how many cosmetic surgery clinics have had an influx of enquiries today. I watch it, against my better judgement, but I can't believe it's still allowed to air.

I watch it because my DD (older teen) does, as do her friends. I can't prevent her from watching, so we do it together, and it's been illuminating - both what's on the show and how she talks about it

Uttery moronic TV for utterly moronic viewers.

It's incredibly ironic that people on here are saying the show should be cancelled because two previous contestants committed suicide (despite their being no actual connection between being on the show and their suicides) and yet they're also the people saying nasty, bitchy, bullying comments about the contestants...the kind of nasty, bitchy, bullying comments that might push someone to, you know, commit suicide... Stop blaming Love Island because you can't stop yourself being nasty.

Actually there has. I watched a programme dispatches on JK ITV on C4 it mentioned love Island and interviewed previous contestants on how they were manipulated and left deflated. ITV's reply to the show was to increase aftercare.

That's not a connection... Some contestants saying they felt "manipulated and deflated" does not mean that Sophie and Mike committed suicide because of the show, it doesn't even mean Sophie and Mike felt manipulated or deflated or that the manipulation or deflation led to their suicides. If you broke up with someone and they said they felt "manipulated and deflated" by you, and then they committed suicide many years later (immediately after the death of a loved one), would you think you're to blame (and that's excluding the fact that it wasn't even the people who committed suicide who said they felt manipulated/deflated)? Don't be silly.
Ijustcametosayhello · 01/07/2021 09:10

It just feels wrong now, they should have stopped after Caroline. It's had it's day.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/07/2021 09:27

@CopperBear It was a bit more than deflation they were manipulated by producers who knew exactly how to get the best results regardless of the damage to the individual.

CopperBear · 01/07/2021 09:30

You said manipulated and deflated so I said manipulated and deflated - your words, not mine. Not sure why you have an issue with the word you used Hmm

EmeraldShamrock · 01/07/2021 09:36

@CopperBear Okay.
You've your opinion on these shows. There is evidence on the show I mentioned.
I may not have the correct wording.
