To think we should not be spending 200m on a Royal Yacht

Not right now, it just seems like a waste of money at a time when there is so much that could be spent on. I wonder who even wants it- AIBU?

Yes it's infuriating and a thoroughly tone deaf move, especially given the state of the economy and national morale at present.

@Thevoiceofreason2021

It’s not a yacht, it’s a ship. Also it will be designed and built in the UK giving work and supporting local economies. Our shipbuilding industry is in tatters and yet we have a history of great shipbuilding, our engineers work world wide because we can’t get work at home. The new Britannia will be a fantastic project which will boost our economy and showcase our industry. It couldn’t come at a better time.
I can think of better things to boost the economy and provide jobs. Some new hospitals perhaps?

Another Johnson plaything. Of very limited value to U.K. A bit like the planes.

billyt · 21/06/2021 22:06

I'll back it if we can fill it with the Royal Family and all the twatty lying, politicians fucking this country over left, right and centre...and sink the fucker.

Leafyhouse · 21/06/2021 22:11

OK - so how would people feel if it was funded entirely by wealthy Tory donors? £50m is already in the pot. Would that make it more or less acceptable to people?

BlowDryRat · 21/06/2021 22:13

YANBU. Unless it's solar/wind powered and used to get Boris & co to meetings instead of flying, then what exactly is the point? It's another stupid waste of money designed to appeal to gammons.

NO!

Absolutely NOT!
Are you having a laugh?

Do you honestly honestly think that if Tory donors funded this monstrosity, there would not be backhanders somewhere along the line? Peerages, government contracts???

A donor gives to get something out

“OK - so how would people feel if it was funded entirely by wealthy Tory donors? £50m is already in the pot. Would that make it more or less acceptable to people?”

Nope. What do you imagine the donors are getting in return? Because it isn’t a thank you letter and nice fuzzy feelings.

Far less attractive- which is hard. It’s a shocking misuse of public funds for personal pleasure. Using Tory cronies money to support it is a way of accepting corrupt backhand bribes for peerages.
Blossomtoes · 21/06/2021 22:43

Frankly, I’d be all for it if all they got in exchange was peerages, they can give meaningless titles and a seat in the Lords to as many of their mates as they like. Unfortunately that would be far from all they were given.

@underneaththeash

I think the royal family is very good value for money and significantly better than an elected alternative.
You're joking. We'd save a fortune if we had a presidency like Ireland has. An unelected head of state is wrong on every level. They don't deserve the ridiculous reverence they get. Just an ordinary family.

Donors would expect something but above all, you (and Johnson) ignoring the aspect of the running costs - Britannia cost £12million a year to run.

Even if it is to drum up business (since the Royal Family are wisely distancing themselves from this), successful business leaders have got better things to do than bob around oceans. Especially as quite a few important countries are actually land-locked...
