To think we should not be spending 200m on a Royal Yacht

Not right now, it just seems like a waste of money at a time when there is so much that could be spent on. I wonder who even wants it- AIBU?

YANBU.

The previous royal gin palace was scrapped for a reason.

underneaththeash · 21/06/2021 20:26

I think the royal family is very good value for money and significantly better than an elected alternative.

Etulosba · 21/06/2021 20:26

My only moan is that it should be bigger.

PicsInRed · 21/06/2021 20:28

Can we name it the Airmiles Andy?

After our most distinguished and prolific international trade ambassador? ❤

If so, let's do this thing.

Chickpeasorchips · 21/06/2021 20:32

This. And in all honesty this government has splashed so much money around in the last year this will barely register.

Kind of reminds me of when I've overdone it at Christmas and so spend more in the January sales, only to really regret it by about March

@picsinRed, no Boris's Penis Extension is a far more apt name

Umm, have you any idea what the running cost of this would be? Alexander De Pfeffel wants to compete socially with his Russian paymasters friends. Profligate corrupt nonsense.
Leafyhouse · 21/06/2021 20:36

I think we should have it. We're not a poverty stricken nation. Besides, there's £50m in the kitty that's been donated by the chap who used to own NCP Car Parks (Donald Gosling) who donated the money specifically for the purchase of a royal yacht. That'll help a bit surely.

Serin · 21/06/2021 20:37

Which one if the cabinet has a brother in shipbuilding then?

Honestly if we have money to throw around we should start by sending some vaccines to the people of Nepal who have fought loyally in our armed forces.

Chickpeasorchips · 21/06/2021 20:38

I think we should have it. We're not a poverty stricken nation

But look at the amount of people having no choice but to use food banks

OP posts:
PearlclutchersInc · 21/06/2021 20:40

Funded by the Tories for Tory funded jollies no doubt. There's nothing royal about it and undoubtedly used by Boris and Carrie's tax payer funder holidays.....

And I would lay odds that it won't be constructed in the UK.

It's not a "Royal Yacht" - the Royal Family don't want it - it's a distraction to get the uninformed uncritical tabloid readers to nod along with the "patriotism" illusion instead of noticing the billions going into tory chums' pockets, the disempowering of the electoral commission, the ongoing underfunding of the Courts, the Police , the selling off of the NHS (looking at you and your husband Dido). What can you do??
pussycatlickinglollyices · 21/06/2021 20:43

No we should not be funding HMS Leaky while people are forced to use food banks to feed their families.

we've not done that well with our state of the art aircraft carriers

arithanaggerton · 21/06/2021 20:53

@Leafyhouse There are many, many homeless in this country. A quick calculation suggests 0.4% of the country, that is disgraceful.

With £200 million, 2000 council properties could be built. With approximately 3 people to each property assuming some have 1 and others have 4+, that is 600 housed.

arithanaggerton · 21/06/2021 20:53

*6000

arithanaggerton · 21/06/2021 20:55

If the Royals don't want it then they should state that they will absolutely not have it under a Royal title.

BonnieDundee · 21/06/2021 21:08

Yay! Great for dick flag waving. Never mind if our economy is trashed, and millions unemployed, children living in poverty, the NHS, police, schools chronically underfunded. We will have A Big Boat that will make Boris look good even better, he can probably hand out some more lucrative contracts to his mates

CathyorClaire · 21/06/2021 21:21

@arithanaggerton

If the Royals don't want it then they should state that they will absolutely not have it under a Royal title.
They should but endless form for letting the little people pay for their jollies suggests the poor, duty- burdened things will let it be foisted on them with a sigh of resignation.
Leafyhouse · 21/06/2021 21:36

I'm not making a judgment about Royal Yachts vs Council Houses. What I'm saying is that we're a rich enough nation - we can afford both. Framing it as either / or is a matter of political choice. NHS England spends that in less than a day, let alone the rest of government. In fact, maybe they wouldn't need government money at all - they could throw a city fundraiser, the money would show up. But that wouldn't be politically acceptable, rather like Boris's flat refurbishment. So it's not about money. There's plenty of that around - for both council houses and yachts.

FictionalCharacter · 21/06/2021 21:37

It is not a royal yacht. It’s another Boris Johnson vanity project and the Queen doesn’t want it. They’re trying to call it royal so that people will think the Queen is somehow to blame for the massive waste of money.

Deadleaf29 · 21/06/2021 21:49

Of course we can “afford it”. We could “afford” a 50 ft giant gold statue of Boris if that’s what we prioritised spending public money on. But it’s about as pointless - what does this ship/yacht/boat/penis substitute actually do. Where does it sail to? Who uses it? For what? Does the fact no other country appears to have one not tell you something?

arithanaggerton · 21/06/2021 21:53

@Leafyhouse

It's the principal of it. 200 million on a yacht when 0.4% of the country is homeless!

You say we are a wealth country, we are. At least other countries with many homeless aren't spending £200 million on big show off yachts with a Royal title.

But we're the UK aren't we? Showing off how 'great' we are is in this country's nature.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 21:54

It's not the massive cost to build it. It's the running costs. The royal yacht was decommissioned 25 years ago because even back then it cost £12million to run.
Pathetic to even contemplate this during these difficult economic times.

Roussette · 21/06/2021 21:55

That's £12 million A YEAR

arithanaggerton · 21/06/2021 21:55

Buggered up my last post, pressed send accidentally while editing it

*You say we are a wealthy country, yes we are. Other countries are wealthy with many homeless. But at least other countries with many homeless aren't spending £200 million on big show off yachts with a Royal title.
