Fabulous - if I was near by them I'd be going.

I've had too many meals out ruined by out of control small children. Too many parents can't/won't teach their children to behave appropriately.

I was in one cafe with a family with just crawling twins. The mother put them down to crawl around saying loudly "feral time". It was a small floor space with waiting staff carrying hot drinks and food around ( highly dangerous) and one of the babies spent a happy few minutes wrecking the shelves holding speciality teas.

Not the children's fault, they were too young but those parents are bringing them up to be proper little nightmares in a couple of years time.

Sounds very sensible. Too many parents think everyone should put up with their unruly kids (and the same goes for dog owners and their dogs, too).

Any child- and dog-free pub is likely to be me-friendly.

The only thing I would say is 12 is a little old, you only really need to ban under 7 year olds to get rid of the ones who run around and play Peppa Pig on loudspeaker.

Actually you just need to ban the parents, the kids would probably be ok if you told them the rules and the parents didn't think their kids were too good to comply.

This country has such a weird attitude to children in public places and this thread proves it. So because some parents let their children misbehave then ALL children should be banned? Total overkill.

I wish more did this.

One of my favourite things about our local pub is that children are only allowed in certain areas.

It was the best thing about wetherspoons when they first opened as they were over 18s with no TV.

When I was a kid pubs that allowed children were the exception not the rule and often landlords would only allow well behaved children. I'm not suggesting that we should go back to those days but some parents don't recognize that not all pubs are wacky warehouse play centre pubs and not everyone wants to listen to their little darlings shouting and running around.

Hello, there.

Parents who bring their children into pubs quite frankly shouldn't have children. Introducing them to such a horrible environment with alcohol, drugs and adultery is absurd.

Amen.

Oooh please tell me where these Victorian era style dens of inequity are? I'd love to visit. Most pubs are uptight gastro pub style ones these days.

I'm a bit torn. It would be better to remove the problem families rather than penalise all children. But I can see that if they were having to do this every Sunday, it becomes more hassle than it's worth to have children there and deal with the aggregation every weekend. The upside to excluding children is that you don't have to deal with cheeky fucker entitled parents!
It's a shame for normal families though.

Dont understand the fuss. There are several pubs where I live that wont allow under 14s. Its quite nice to go to them for a meal without uncontrolled children running round. (And tbh I blame the parents for that. When DS was young we would take something quiet for him to do; but he sat at the table to do it with us - we'd take him somewhere to run off steam beforehand)

@Whatabouttery

What if the child identifies as a fifty year old?

If you’re eating out there’s nothing worse than out of control kids treating a restaurant like a playground. If only other places would follow suit where I live 🙏🏻🤞🏼

@Shoxfordian

Good for the pub
I wish they would all operate like this

Couldn’t agree more. I’m sick of having my lunches ruined by badly behaved kids and their parents to really don’t give a shit.

Good. It sounds as though they were far too patient with this family.

Hell would've frozen over before I would've asked other customers to move, rather than making the family leave.

There'll be plenty of other pubs they can take them to.

They don't sound like the sort of family that would take kindly to being asked to leave, presumably their brats were expressing themselves as thei breeders ignored them.

It's a bit of a non story though isn't it? A pub can choose whether to cater to families or not, this one doesn't.

Our DD has always been well behaved in pubs/restaurants. She enjoys food and the the experience. But if she was the type to run around, be noisy and generally be a pest we would stick to places like Giraffe where it's expected. I always look for a children's menu before booking anywhere, and if they don't have one check ahead that they are family friendly first. If they said no, I'd accept that and book somewhere else.

Brilliant. I'd visit.

When pubs reopened DH and I visited one evening. They had covid measures in place. They also had a machine selling those eggs, in which were bouncy balls. You can imagine where that would lead.

I ate my meal with children periodically appearing at my feet to retrieve the balls they were throwing around. Eventually I said something when their father joined in.

Good for them.
It's a shame more pubs don't do this.
Children and alcohol don't mix.

It's fine. It's clear what the rule is and unlike 'well behaved children welcome' does not have the risk of discrimination.

You are taking the piss aren't you @charlottebameseed?

If not, what pubs do you go to where you can get a side order of adultery along with a pint?

I have a toddler and yet I agree that they are doing the right thing. I detest having days out/events ruined by unruly kids who have been dragged up.

If I was the owner, I would have asked the parents to leave right there and then and barred them! Grin

Why is there such a big fuss now, they did it in Sept last year as well, so are you trying to advertise for them?

Good for the pub. I remember the olden days when children weren't allowed in pubs at all and it was a more peaceful experience than these days. Our favourite pub doesn't even allow babies!

My local cafe has a blanket “no under 16 rule”. It does good business.

I have been to this pub, and I vowed to never go back.
It's not the no children that bothers me, it's the rude signs up everywhere, rude staff, and mediocre food. I'm coeliac and while it's nice to know you can order whatever you want it's just microwaved shit.

Actually this isn't as straight forward as it sounds. This pub has a long standing reputation of being extremely anti-child. They had already banned any under 12's except for Sunday lunch and previous to that had numerous signs rudely demanding that children be made to behave. All the while dogs are given the run of the pub and cats roam freely over the bar and dining tables. With yesterday being Father's Day no doubt they were expecting a large number of families and were on guard to be displeased. Whilst I wasn't there to comment on the behaviour witnessed I can only say that the condemnation most definitely comes from a place of considering ANY childlike behaviour as bad behaviour. Even if your little ones sit impeccably still, waiting to be spoken to and reply accordingly in hushed tones they are unacceptable in this establishment. It is incredibly unfriendly, unless you are a childless dog owner...
However, it is absolutely their right to do as they please and some similarly judgemental, unfriendly types will find it idyllic!
