Name for our baby girl-

I prefer the shortened version Joules, does it look like I am copying the clothing brand?

Definitely not Joules or Jules as a proper name. That is a nickname.

I'd stick to Julia or Juliet.

CambsAlways · 20/06/2021 18:23

Jools or jules lovely names but I’m biased

NotTheCatsWhiskers · 20/06/2021 18:24

Julia and whatever she decides her nickname to be.

I know a Julia who calls herself Jules.

Joolsin · 20/06/2021 18:31

I'm another Julie who some people, notably my lovely late Dad, call/called Jools (see user name!). I would not use Joules, either as a nn or full name, asides from the association with the shop/electricity, could be mispronounced as jowls and that's not nice!

Iluvperegrines · 20/06/2021 18:31

Joules can most be definitely a surname (we’ve got it in our family) but it is also a brand, would you name your child Timpsons? Ford, Tesla? All surnames strongly associated with brands.
Fwiw I love Jules.

Julia.

You can informally call her Jools /whatever celeb crap as a nickname, but when she grows up she'll have a real grown-up name that won't embarrass her.

YouLookSoCool · 20/06/2021 18:38

Julia or Juliet (or Juliette?) are lovely names. I'd put one of those on birth certificate
then it can be shortened. Joules is most definitely a shop rather than a name in my mind!

NeedNewKnees · 20/06/2021 18:44

Joules is dreadful for both reasons given.

I know a Jules, a Jools and a Joolz.
Julia, Juliet, Juliana and variants are all nice formal names

julachu · 20/06/2021 20:28

I'm a Julia. Love my name Smile (maybe I'm smug Grin).
Realistically, I'm not sure you can control what someone's nickname will be, they'll have their own opinions and their friends will probably end up shortening the name in various ways too.
Some people call me Jules, but I also get Ju and Juju - probably not what my parents envisaged to be honest! I mostly go by Ju.
I think if you try and establish the nickname as Joules it will be constantly misspelled and you will also end up having to explain it over and over which could become tiresome, so personally I'd just go with the more standard spelling of Jules.

tarheelbaby · 20/06/2021 20:38

My J-bug likes Lia as a NN. It's been a name in my family for 6 generations and netted her a tidy inheritance.

Use whatever name you like but go for a 'real' version that you shorten.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 20/06/2021 20:40

I wanted Juliet nn Joules for dc2 but they were a boy Grin

Smartiepants79 · 20/06/2021 20:44

You cannot use Joules. It’s like naming your child macdonalds.
Jules or Jools is fine. I like Julia and Juliette.
