Julia, Jools, Joules or Jules

Name for our baby girl-

I prefer the shortened version Joules, does it look like I am copying the clothing brand?

OP posts:

My name is closely related (but often described as fairly horrible on MN). Be careful how today's popular name might be despaired of in future.

I loathe Juliet(te). I quite like Julia. I am indifferent to the others, one of which has been my nickname.

StillMedusa · 20/06/2021 10:20

I'm a Julie..but called Jules. (I wish I'd been Julia as it's prettier imo Grin . I like Jules... and if I'm corresponding with someone by email it has the advantage that they don't know if I'm male or female, which is often useful!
Definitely not Joules tho! Might as well call her White Stuff!

newnortherner111 · 20/06/2021 10:22

I agree with proper name on birth certificate, and like Julia as a name (perhaps as with any name influenced by those I have known with it).

sashh · 20/06/2021 10:31

Joules : a measurement equal to the work done by a force of one newton acting through one metre

NOT a name.

Juliette, Julia, Julianna, Jewel are all names

I quite like Newton as a name though
PattyPan · 20/06/2021 10:49

Jules but only short for Julia or Juliet. Joules is a measure of energy, like calories.

mistermagpie · 20/06/2021 10:54

Julia is such a lovely name, really underused these days. I'd go for that and Jules for short. But it doesn't really matter how you spell a shortening, nobody really writes it down.

khakiandcoral · 20/06/2021 11:01

Don't give your child the name of a brand.

I would think physics-influenced if I heard Joules too.

However, just because it has another meaning, it doesn't mean it couldn't be a name - jewel is a thing too, and heaps of people are named after other things (Summer, Ruby, Grace, etc).

And obviously it would be a name if OP chose it as a names, wouldn't it?

Gertie75 · 20/06/2021 14:56

I love the name Julia, very pretty and all the ones I know are lovely people.

Not keen on Joules, it's the name of a unit of energy.

ChrissyPlummer · 20/06/2021 15:00

How is it a shortened version when it’s longer than the other names? I would instantly think of the clothes.

Serin · 20/06/2021 17:25

Joules would be a fabulous name for a physics teacher.
Julia is ok, I love Juliet.

Grapewrath · 20/06/2021 17:31

Really dislike joules as a spelling and yes, it looks like you copied the shop
Out of what you’ve suggested I’d definitely go for Julia ( although I much prefer Juliet or Juliana). I’m not keen on Jules as a first name- I know several Jules who are male (Julian)

HareofEasttown · 20/06/2021 17:32

Joules is awful! It's like calling your child Boden or Crew Clothing Co!

Jules is nice.

Redwinestillfine · 20/06/2021 17:33

Julia. She can then us whatever informal version she feels is appropriate when bshe is older.

BillyShears · 20/06/2021 17:34

Give her the name Julia on her BC (beautiful name and a beautiful Beatles song) and then call her Jules.

EishetChayil · 20/06/2021 17:34

None!! Awful, smug name.

Getawriggleon · 20/06/2021 17:34

Joules, a sister for Boden.

Sirzy · 20/06/2021 17:35

Joules in any form is a nickname IMO, she would have a life of being asked “what’s the short of”

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 20/06/2021 17:37

I’m in the camp of give a proper names and Jules as a nn.

Yes. Joules has only ever been the brand, or a unit of energy, hasn’t it? Or hasn’t it? Confused

Jools is horrible too, IMO. Jules is okay.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/06/2021 17:44

I know a Jools and a couple of Jules - all actually called Julie.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 20/06/2021 17:57

No need to be bitchy

Eh? Smug?

Julia, shorted to Jools is a fabulous name. Thanks mum😏

DeathByWalkies · 20/06/2021 18:04

The (rather sensible IMO) three tests for a baby name are

"Can X come out to play?"

"X, will you marry me?"

"Do you think X is ready for promotion?"

If it sounds silly in any of those three contexts, it's a bad idea.

I'd call the baby Julia / Juliet so she can use that if she wishes in professional circumstances and have Jules / Jools as her "known as" name.
