2 weeks ago I was in the pub with my gfs and we got a bit merry and started to sing. We were given a warning and told we would have to leave if we continued. Last night when the footie was on all the men in the pub stood up and say the national antham, they were hugging and chanting, shouting the lot and yet nothing was said.

“sad fuckers … pathetic aimless lives”

Suggests philistinism rather than merely dislike of the actual sport to me.

YANBU.

It's football, and to some sad fuckers it's literally the most important thing in their pathetic aimless lives.

Blimey. Given 20 million sad fuckers with pathetic aimless lives tuned in on Friday night it's a wonder we ever get anything done.
Ellpellwood · 20/06/2021 10:20

The government has played a blinder here though. So far to blame we have had:

Everyone who didn't follow a vague "keep 6ft away" message in March 2020
People on beaches
Non-white-British people in multi-generational households up North
Young people going out too much during Eat Out to Help Out
Schools going back
Influencers going to Dubai at Christmas
Everyone queueing when Primark reopened
And now football fans.

Who's next?

Badbadbunny · 20/06/2021 10:34

You do realise the Euros are a European event. Not much the UK can do about matches in other countries and we wouldn't be allowed to participate if we didn't allow matches in the UK. I think the reduced numbers allowed and other precautions is a fair compromise to participate.

Funnily enough I bet Ascot and Wimbledon won't be blamed
RandomLondoner · 20/06/2021 10:48

It makes sense to me. If everyone in the pub was equally drunk and singing Sweet Caroline, it wouldn't have been a problem, and you wouldn't have been threatened with eviction.

A private celebration by a small majority is more annoying than a group celebration by the overwhelming majority. In the latter case, there's virtually no-one left over to annoy. In both cases, it's the interests of the majority that are being favoured.

ineedaholidaynow · 20/06/2021 10:49

Ascot was a test event so everyone had to show evidence of a negative test and then have 2 PCR tests too

Ellpellwood · 20/06/2021 11:01

Nope. Actually I've decided, it'll be families "flocking" to Cornwall and Devon in the summer holidays. They always "flock".

Some of those sad fuckers are lonely isolated men living without the benefit of social circles and friendship that some people enjoy. Sport and football in particular is often the only way they have to connect with others.
It can be a huge boost to mental health.
Out of interest do you include women in your list of sad fuckers?
I like watching football I'm pretty sure I'm not alone.

Fans at Wembley have to be double vaccinated (plus two weeks) or have a negative test before attending. It’s perfectly possible to be Covid-cautious and attend a match.
Only one in four seats are filled, which also means the concourse areas aren’t at all crowded - and you only need to pass through them for a minute to get to your seat, then you are outside. Trains aren’t crowded either.

JustDanceAddict · 20/06/2021 11:23

It’s def rule for them/us where football is concerned.

I agree. The concourses are also huge open spaces. (Yes, they've got a ceiling/roof, but it's very high and the ventilation is good with lots of wide open doors on each side. In fact when I was there a few weeks ago, the concourse was like a huge wind tunnel. Very, very low risk, especially with the vastly reduced numbers allowed.
Medianoche · 20/06/2021 12:04

Yes @badbadbunny even when Wembley’s at full capacity, the concourse areas just don’t get that crowded. They’re huge spaces.
I’m definitely at the cautious end of the range - wouldn’t be indoors in a pub or restaurant at the moment and wouldn’t do indoor theatre or cinema either - but Wembley was fine.

SamW98 · 20/06/2021 12:39

I get the whole pint about double vaxed and negative tests for events but it does seem to be biased towards the events where big corporate sponsorship is involved

I know several event promotors who have gone cap in hand to local councils asking for small outdoor events to allow dancing, offering reduced numbers, proof of vaccine and negative tests to be shown but have repeatedly been told its not safe - for a couple of hundred people max yet 1000's allowed at the big test events

MountainDweller · 20/06/2021 12:47

Amateur choirs aren't allowed to rehearse or perform inside in a socially distanced way, but drunken football fans are allowed to sing inside with no social distancing. Amateur choirs are an incredibly important part of culture in the U.K. but football is obviously more important than the arts. One rule for us (whether a group of friends on a night out or a top amateur choir) and one rule for them (large groups of men, anything related to certain sports). The rules are just a joke now.

derxa · 20/06/2021 12:56

The Euro matches are the only thing keeping me going at the moment. Good luck to Wales tonight.

Medianoche · 20/06/2021 12:59

I can see why it feels unfair, but the rules don’t allow football fans to sing indoors in pubs with no distancing. There’s no exemption. The problem is a lack of enforcement and the pubs just letting it happen wouldn’t be getting my business in future.

Meltinthemiddle · 20/06/2021 13:03

To be honest the euro celebrations is just one of the things that's pissed me off along with Ascot, G7 etc and all the rest where is seems the rules do not apply due to money or being a celev. Its not that that I'm blaming them for spreading the virus but more to do with the rules seem to chop and change to suit! I know so many people who have had to postpone weddings and now have restrictions in place or go to pregnancy scans alone, restricted numbers at furnerals. Important real life stuff and then you see Ascot or the G7 and you just think whats the fucking point.

I think you might need to check this. I think you have got it wrong.

I agree with this. I went to the FA Cup Final a couple of years ago, full capacity and (had we needed to) it would have been easy to social distance in the concourse areas. They’re absolutely massive.

In contrast, we went to the theatre in London just before the first lockdown and the lobby was absolutely rammed. Impossible to avoid other people.

Football fans AREN'T "Allowed" to sing inside etc. The problem is that venues, police, councils, etc., aren't enforcing the rules.
Drovememad · 30/06/2021 06:21

Oh really! I'm sorry for having fun in a pub singing the chorus of sweet Caroline whilst intoxicated!

Hmmm not sure I'd be having much fun being sat next to you!

So you broke the rules, but you don't think others should?

If you hadn't been stopped from "singing" then would you be happy that the fans of the football are also not being stopped?
