2 weeks ago I was in the pub with my gfs and we got a bit merry and started to sing. We were given a warning and told we would have to leave if we continued. Last night when the footie was on all the men in the pub stood up and say the national antham, they were hugging and chanting, shouting the lot and yet nothing was said.

That crowd at the Hungary match!

mollypuss1 · 19/06/2021 21:02

@MapGirlExtraordinaire

But they're white men. Of course they can do what they want
Where did she say they were white?
newnortherner111 · 19/06/2021 21:03

Covid 19 restrictions have been inconsistent since March 2020, or at least since the infamous visit to Barnard Castle.

MapGirlExtraordinaire · 19/06/2021 21:14

It's obvious mollypuss.

Do you think if they'd been predominantly non white they'd have been allowed to make lots of noise and merriment? Or do you think they'd have been shut up?

Of course some may have been non white, but BLM protests - police presence and police violence
Sarah Everard vigil - police presence and police violence
Big crowd of white men watching football - left to get on with it

Do you think it would go differently?

jesusmaryjosephandtheweedonkey · 19/06/2021 21:21

Man makes rules to suit men from being bored

humptydumpty21 · 19/06/2021 21:23

Football and Ascot - how the hell have both events been allowed to happen?! Makes me so angry.

Blackdog19 · 19/06/2021 21:27

I agree. Can’t watch my ds’s Y6 production because of Covid but this, and ascot is all ok.

It’s really not obvious. Lots of ‘non white’ men (and women) watch football. Lots of ‘non white’ men (and women) are patriotic when it comes to football and lots of ‘non white’ men (and women) are loud/shouty/sing in a pub when watching football. You have no way of knowing what colour of skin these men had from the limited information given in the OP and I really don’t think a group of men in a pub being allowed to sing by a landlord is comparable to mass protests and vigils.

@user1471517900

Not entirely sure the Euros are to blame here. More the people disobeying the rules.

This. 100% this.

I saw a meme on Facebook earlier showing a picture of the crowds in London saying 'how is this allowed' and underneath a picture of a kids sports day 'when this is not'

Neither are allowed. The idiots in pubs/streets etc are mindless rule breakers.

True. But the police reaction to eg the Sarah Everard vigil was very different and the next day there was lots of talk about how yes maybe the police were a bit heavy handed but to fair this is a pandemic and they shouldn’t have been there.
Oh but football well that’s fine then, can’t possibly expect people to not gather for the football. Oh the humanity!

And I’m aware of the studies showing no spike from BLM protests, so it’s the disparity that annoys me far more than the crowds themselves.

ThursdayLastWeek · 19/06/2021 21:45

Hypocrisy is rife.

We’ve just had the G7 where it seems masks and SD were for photo ops only. If the heat and the good of the world CBA, why should so many normal folk be denied some entertainment in the form of football?

SamW98 · 19/06/2021 21:48

Some councils have warned pubs that any signing, chanting, cheering etc while watching football is a breach of the regulations and the publican is liable for a £1000 fine. However, in reality, this would be extremely difficult to police

I personally think with the Euros Ascot, the Scottish fans partying in London etc, many people will now think sod the rules, why should we carry on when no one else seems to - I can see things being quite fraught with regards compliance of regulations after Monday

SamW98 · 19/06/2021 21:50

Each countries COVID rules are different. Hungary has a low case rate and they are pretty much living normally
slashlover · 19/06/2021 22:04

Because a large group singing one song is a bit different to you and your pissed up mates annoying everyone else by singing.

Meltinthemiddle · 19/06/2021 22:28

Oh really! I'm sorry for having fun in a pub singing the chorus of sweet Caroline whilst intoxicated!

OP posts:
SpindleWhorl · 19/06/2021 22:30

I like Sweet Caroline. Good riffs 👍

SamW98 · 19/06/2021 22:40

It is frustrating. My friend is a promotor and tried to put on an event inn the grounds of a wedding venue (Manor House) - all outside, tables of 6 with music, food and a bar

The council has told him it must be seated only, no dancing, table service and background music only, And they will attend the entire event, film it and close it down if anyone dances, sings loudly or the music is above a certain approved decibel level. Most of the punters are 45+ (and mostly over 50).

Yet Ascot, Euros, Wimbledon etc have crowds of 1000's - but the rules seem to change when there's big corporate money involved

NiceGerbil · 19/06/2021 22:43

Football innit.

Important to men.

Ilovemaisie · 19/06/2021 22:49

Ha ha.... I live across the road from a pub that had some terrible singing of Sweet Caroline the other day. Are you in South London by any chance Meltinthemiddle

It's football, and to some sad fuckers it's literally the most important thing in their pathetic aimless lives.

Are you such a philistine in other aspects of culture or just football?
NiceGerbil · 20/06/2021 02:04

Football is culture? In the way that makes you a philistine if you don't like it?!!

Crikey.

Yes it is being allowed pretty much as business as usual because it's a massive thing for so many white men.

Look at what happened with the super League and so fast. And with government statements.

If football fans are unhappy it's important.

Because there are so many and they are men and the last thing you want is angry men.

Remember the hooliganism?

Our high street used to be boarded up when certain teams came to play.

I know men who it is the be all and end all.

There used to be pubs here where men never went to the 'wrong' one and there were fights and bottlings etc.

Of course women children etc like football.

But to pretend the reason that the rules are different for covid, is not because of this. Is silly tbh.

NiceGerbil · 20/06/2021 02:07

philistine : guided by materialism and disdainful of intellectual or artistic values
a philistine attitude toward opera
