To think a lot of people are completely stupid?

Someone posted a photo on a Facebook group of a Fabulosa product that is mean to keep artificial lawn clean and smelling nice. Said product is rammed full of toxic chemicals that are harmful to humans, animals and the environment. Hundreds of comments of people praising the product, tagging their mates in it. Lots of people going to be buying it, damaging the environment, probably harming their cats and dogs in the process. So bloody stupid. This cleaning craze of fabulosa and zeflora is beyond stupid.

Saw another post where people where complaining about paper straws and posting links of where others could purchase plastic straws. I mean, sure, I preferred plastic straws. They didn't go soggy and disintegrate half way through a drink but really, it's a small sacrifice to make. It's stupid and selfish.

Spoke to several people recently, ages varying between 20s and late 50s. None of them aware of who the suffragettes were.

So AIBU to think that so many people really are just stupid?

Yes people are fucking idiots. We need more stringent legislation to protect the environment from selfish cretins and that includes ghastly astroturf!

Somethingsnappy · 19/06/2021 23:41

People are too busy taking selfies these days. It eats into their learning and education time.....

mybrainhertz · 19/06/2021 23:49

I once had a friend years ago who didn't know there was a war going on in Afghanistan.

Somethingsnappy · 19/06/2021 23:52

OK people, admit it..... Tell us something you found out recently, that you were very embarrassed not to have already known....?

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 19/06/2021 23:57

@mybrainhertz

I once had a friend years ago who didn't know there was a war going on in Afghanistan.
Well I am sure some people may not even know there is Afghanistan or where perhaps it is located. I am also sure most people will not have knowledge of every ongoing war or conflict on Earth. Many are unreported in western English language news media. So unless it is a particular part of the world one has a connection or link to, not everyone will know every country and every wall. This is therefore not an indication of intelligence but perhaps more of particular interest.
ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 19/06/2021 23:59
  • war (typo!)
mybrainhertz · 20/06/2021 00:02

It was a main war at the time and on the news every night. It wasn't some piddling minor conflict.

CalishataFolkart · 20/06/2021 00:04

50% of the population has always been, and will always be, below average intelligence. So if they are getting more stupid that means we all are, including the 50% above average.

I've learned lots off the telly and my computer.
I'm doing that right now.

Patronising much?

Why is a cleaning product needed for artificial grass anyway? It’s porous, isn’t it? So what’s wrong with just plain water that’s going to soak away?

VeniVidiWeeWee · 20/06/2021 00:33

OP. If you are unable to write grammatically I suggest you don't call people stupid.

Gallowayan · 20/06/2021 00:38

Everyone has gaps in their knowledge. I would wind your neck in

Hawkins001 · 20/06/2021 00:40

Firstly , most of the time , I'm daft as a brush,

As to the ops question , however with a good percentage of people when I see YouTube and see people debating and attempting to educate others, it's like, have they understood the information first and then can quote the prevalent, facts, as a good proportion, of people just end up argueing and insults, rather than proper debating and exchanging of knowledge and understanding. And when people want to have the freedom of speech and democracy, yet soon as someone disagrees with them, they try to shout down the other person.

BluebellsGreenbells · 20/06/2021 00:42

I’m not sure if there are more stupid people about, it’s just more obviously through the use of social media.

Recent post ‘there’s not hot water, is there a burst pipe?’
No idea how hot water happens
DD ex had a flat battery in his car, so sold it as not running …. Brought a new one as daddy is rich.
Lady across the road asked me where to buy red light bulbs as hers was broken, I asked if it was for her fire, she said no, the bathroom had a red light when she moved in so assumed that’s what it needed.

The list goes on!

TurquoiseLemur · 20/06/2021 00:45

@0None0

Are you aware of who the suffragettes were? Cos there is a good chance you aren’t. Of course you’ll go and look them up now and claim you knew all along….

People don’t know what they don’t know. Then they find out, then they do know. It’s not related to intelligence or otherwise

The suffragette movement is something I would expect every adult in the West of average intelligence to know something about.

It's not JUST related to intelligence, no. More to do with general curiosity. My elderly PIL would score highly on an IQ test but are the most un-curious people. It amazes me what they don't know beyond their own academic/professional fields. They apparently got through the 60s (when my DH was a small child) without being aware of the Beatles.

But my question would be: why are so many people apparently so lacking in curiosity? Is it because they are surrounded by vacuous media of various kinds and can't be arsed to actually seek out anything that isn't a quiz show/reality show/talent contest? Or something else?

TurquoiseLemur · 20/06/2021 00:50

Resipsa, are you seriously suggesting that the war in Afghanistan was not covered much by Western media? It was one of the main stories, often several times a week, for several years. British soldiers were deployed there, there were lots of deaths.

I wouldn't expect most people to have knowledge of every ongoing war and conflict on Earth, no.

There are more news media outlets now than there have ever been. No excuse to not know the basics.

famousforwrongreason · 20/06/2021 00:57

As a nation we seem to be proudly dumbing down. I'm embarrassed and ashamed of Britain. The vox populi is horrible if you listen too closely.
We're a laughing stock in the EU and predominantly very superficial, egotistical and lacking empathy.
We are fully aware of how narcissistic and dishonest our leaders are but kowtow to then anyway.
I'm aware I'm generalising but it seems that to question or challenge anything puts you in the minority.
Even in this microcosm of the Internet, the amount of women who respond only to ridicule and criticise posters is shocking
Humanity is getting nasty and becoming inhumane
I'm of mixed heritage and I struggle to identity with so much of what people here think is worthwhile.

Hawkins001 · 20/06/2021 00:59

I wish humans as a whole, would be more like the people in a town called eureka, fictional show, but it would give humanity a lot better chance , especially when humanity enters into the space age, and meets the other creatures and beings, in the various galaxies.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 20/06/2021 01:06

If you're going to accuse people of being stupid you really need to ensure your posts are grammatically correct.

Bintohellandback · 20/06/2021 01:34

I don't think there's anything wrong with being 'a bit thick'. People who were (for example) really hard working manual labourers, or kind- hearted carers for their family, or amazing with animals, but were not hugely intelligent have always existed. They have just as an important a role as anyone else.

The issue is the absolute load of bollocks that consumerism and technology has provided the people of the world to partake in that have nothing good to offer society. When there is a never-ending stream of crap available people will make some stupid choices, but they were choices that never should have been there in the first place. Plus plenty of intelligent people contribute to the pollution and damaging of our environment. All.progress is a double-edged sword imo.

TheTuesdayPringle · 20/06/2021 01:57

More greed than ignorance. You'd have to have been living under a rock not to know how to re-use, recycle etc. I don't think people are living under rocks, I think a lot of them are extremely selfish and greedy though and simply do not care for the greater good.

It isn't science we are short of, it is ethics

Draculaswedding · 20/06/2021 02:03

I’m officially a bit thick having an IQ of 85. I know about the suffrage movement, don’t use zoflora or drinking straws and I get my news from left, independent and right biased media to try get an idea of how events and issues are interpreted by different sources. I enjoy learning and trying to think critically. There are different types of intelligence and I would like to think it’s possible to be open to new ideas, to learning and to checking the voracity of where you get your information from despite being a bit thick.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 20/06/2021 02:05

You'd be amazed at the number of people who have an IQ below average...

As I understand it, by definition of the way IQ is calculated, it’s 49%. The average has a constant value (100), which is calibrated against the test results. So if we all got ten percent stupider or cleverer tomorrow, the average would still be 100 - rather than 90 or 110 - and 49% of us would still be below it, though we’d all be stupider or cleverer.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 20/06/2021 02:08

….there’ll be a small prize for the first person to note that ‘stupider’ is not really a word. Admittedly it could be grammaticaller.
